We Sa and the Lumber King - 4.0 stars

FIRST, I'm not sure there's a more perfect example of Beast vs. Jane than this one:

Night vision came as sunlight left. Earth turned into silvers and greens and grays. Liked this time of day/ night. We sa called it beautiful. I called it safe.

Moving on.

If you're a longtime reader of Jane, you know there are periodic references to the Hunger Times. This is a (very) short story from Beast's POV as she tries to get rid of the humans destroying her natural habitat.

Beast is . . . Beast. *snickers*

We also get a peek at baby Jane, who hasn't yet found her way back to human form after melding with Beast.

Haints - 4.0 stars

HAINTS is one more reason why vampires and witches shouldn't mix. o.O

This one is told from Molly's POV, which is awesome b/c we get to see Jane through her eyes (ALSO b/c Molly). Evan is on hand as well, and as he's not hating on Jane, that's fun, too.

Two word summary: WEIRD magic.

ALSO, there are several Easter eggs hidden for true Jane aficionados.

Signatures of Death - 4.0 stars

You know that job Jane had prior to hitting New Orleans? The one where she nearly got her throat ripped out? The one where some kid got her on video with her eyes glowing?

This is that story.

It's not pretty. But dealing with rogue vampires rarely is.

Good thing we have Jane.

Cajun with Fangs - 3.5 stars

This one is a Hatfields and McCoys scenario played out by vampires and witches in the bayou. Jane gets tricked into helping moderate a dispute, and by "tricked" I mean clocked with a heavy object.

Pretty standard as far as these types of things go, BUT most of the involved parties have fantastic Cajun accents, and I do love me a good Cajun accent.

An uneven collection of short stories from the Jane Yellowrock universe.

WE Sa AND THE LUMBER KING was told from Beast's POV. I usually adore her voice, but this story was far too short to add any interesting details to Jane's lonely and feral childhood existence, all alone in the wilderness.
2 ☆

The next two novellas were told from Molly's POV.

In HAINTS, we learn how one witch's disappearance, a hungry vampire child and a haunted house are connected. Not bad, but not great either.
3 ☆

SIGNATURES OF THE DEAD tells us how Jane became the famous household name she has become. Unfortunately, I foubd the story a little underwhwlming. Meh.
2.5 ☆

CAJUN WITH FANGS was by far my favorite novella. In Jane's Cajun adventure, she's made aware of two long feuding families and their vampiric Romeo and witchy Juliet. Luckily, it ends on a happier note than Shakespeare's famous play. This one I liked.
4 ☆

Is it too much to ask for a novella from Let's POV at some point? )Now THAT would be interesting... ;-)

Faith Hunter continues her tradition of sprinkling anthologies between her Jane Yellowrock full-length releases with this collection. I like the way some of the prequel stories she writes help enrich the world-building. In this group, I especially enjoyed “Signatures of the Dead.” Here’s a look at the stories included.

We Sa and the Lumber King – I have to question what the point of this story was, unless it’s just to please fans who enjoy the voice of Beast. There is very little to this, just a couple of pages from Beast’s POV while Jane was a little girl who lived in her mind. We get Beast’s perspective on the white men who are cutting down the trees and destroying her home. And then Beast kills the leader. The end. I didn’t get much out of it.

Haints – This story made up for the first one, giving us an action oriented tale told from Molly’s POV. It’s set before Skinwalker. Molly has been tasked to get to the bottom of a haunted house and she drafts Jane to help her. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a pretty cool story involving magic, a vampire, a witch, and a pocket universe. We also get some quality time with Evan and a visit with Angie Baby. I liked this one.

Signatures of the Dead – The events of this story are referenced often in the series. It’s the vampire case that made Jane Yellowrock a well known vamp-killer. A rouge group of vampires is on a killing spree and Molly and Jane are on the case. No one is safe from the vampires’ blood hunger and gleeful violence. Even one of Molly’s sisters becomes a victim. When Jane, Molly, and a police officer friend named Brax go into an abandoned mine to confront them, the results are bloody and the lives of the survivors will never be the same.

This story kicked ass. We get to see Jane and Molly both doing what they do best. And we know it’s pivotal to where Jane’s life will go. You don’t want to miss this one.

Cajun With Fangs – Eh, this one was ok. It’s set just after Raven Cursed, though it doesn’t really draw much from that book. Jane is on her way back to New Orleans when she has bike trouble and has to stop in a small bayou town. She discovers quickly that there is a war going on between the vampires and witches there and she gets drawn in, despite her best efforts. It ends up something like a supernatural Cajun Romeo and Juliet. Being from New Orleans, the coon-ass accents kind of grated on me. The story itself was fair. I could take it or leave it.

There’s also an extended preview of Death’s Rival. As always, the stories are short, but for the most part they are entertaining and are good for fans looking for a bit more of a Jane Yellowrock fix.

4/5; 4 stars; A-

This is a compilation of four short stories, woven in amongst the main story arc for the Jane Yellowrock series.

1. WeSa and the Lumber King: 3 stars
This is a short, short story, told from Beast's POV. It takes place when Jane was very young, around the turn of the century. Beast observes the destruction of her habitat due to the influx of loggers...she is not happy!

2) Haints: 4 stars
This short story is told from Molly Trueblood's POV and chronologically it is before book 1, Skinwalker. Its a bit confusing when you are used to all the stories coming from Jane or Beast but its a chance to see Jane through Molly's eyes. Jane, Molly, Evan, and policeman Brax foil a murderous vamp trapped in time and 'haunting' an old house.

3) Signatures of the Dead: 5 Stars
Another short story told from Molly's perspective in the time before Skinwalker. This was the first thing I had read in the Jane Yellowrock world when it was published in the anthology Strange Brew.
This was an excellent intro to Jane, the Vampire hunter, the witches, and a bit of vampire lore.

4) Cajun with Fangs: 4 stars

This short story takes place between books 4 and 5, Raven Cursed (Jane Yellowrock, #4) by Faith Hunter and Death's Rival (Jane Yellowrock, #5) by Faith Hunter . Its told from Jane's POV and is a hilarious side trip into a vamp/witch war on the Bayou. Derek and crew are part of the story.

Anthology. 3.5 star average

1. We Sa and the Lumbar King. Story about Jane and Beast when Beast was in control. Short and intentionally not sweet. 3 stars

2. Haints. For some reason, I thought this short story was too long. Maybe I didn't like that Jane wasn't the narrator of the story. That's probably it. 3 stars.

3. Signatures of the Dead. Jane Yellowrock is not the main character, her friend Molly is. Very, very gruesome. Child rape and murder. 3 stars.

4. Cajuns with Fangs. This was a really good story. Most of the other short stories I have read from this series have been so sad/sick but this one was perfect. Loved it! 5 stars

This is a collection of four short stories largely from the early days of Jane Yellowrock’s history – and it does a great job of filling in a lot of Jane’s history and relationships that were already established before the series began – particularly with Molly

The series pretty much began with Jane and Molly as great friends – especially with Molly providing a lot of magical expertise and support for Jane since Molly is a witch. Now the series has never treated Molly as a servant and help has gone both ways, but it’s still nice to see the foundation of this relationship and what made these two highly secretive, careful women who are very wary of revealing their supernatural nature to others came to share so much together.

Haints the second story in the book does a good job of showing some of the initial overtures – we hear how Jane and Molly first met (with Jane protecting Molly from witch haters) and we see Jane helping Molly deal with a ghostly problem – and getting Molly a good income stream, preventing people taking advantage of her. It also excellently showed off Molly’s power and skill as a witch which I really liked.

This is increased further with Signature of the Death with Jane riding to the rescue of Molly’s family facing down rogue vampires. This is also an event that is frequently referred to throughout the main series, Jane facing down a while nest of vicious rogue vampires and taking them down while being terribly injured in the process. Again we see the foundation of this excellent relationship between the two and the respective strengths of each of them. It’s also a nice expansion of an event

There is one problem with this – while I love reading this story of how Jane and Molly came together, how they fought together and how this put them in such a solid place together by the beginning of the series, it also boggles me that Evan, Molly’s husband, has been so hostile to Jane for so long. Ok there are events later in the series that explain the rift, but given the events in this book my gods the Everhart family owes Jane some more consideration. She has done a lot for that family and really, she has earned a damn site more respect and patience from them. Really really she has. It kind of has damaged the way I look at the Everhearts now because their expanded history really makes them look terrible. I’m saddened that my opinion of these characters has now been badly shattered.

Nice collection of short stories. The first two told from Molly's POV were hard to read. We get to see Jane through her eyes, but mostly it just kept reminding of the great relationship that Jane had with Molly and her family that she no longer has because of the things that happened at the end of Raven Cursed. I loved seeing the friendship when it was still somewhat newish in the first story and then again in the second one where we get to find out what happened that day Molly and Jane went into that cave.

The third story was a bit on the light side, but it had it's moments. Plus, a phone convo with Bruiser and Leo (Leo!) that me happy. The story ended up being kind of cute, though. I enjoyed it. It

Reading this collection of short stories gives a nice view of how other characters relate to Jane. What surprised me most is how much Big Evan liked Jane in this collection. I'm so used to him hating Jane that it took me aback.

While many of the points of view aren't from Jane, it still felt the same. The female voice is no different. There is very little to distinguish between Jane and Molly. I'm finding more and more authors with characters who are identical with just another name. It must be very difficult to come up with different characters with unique voices.

Still, this is a good collection for those who enjoy urban fantasy.

WeSa and the Lumber King -

Haints - told from the point of view of Molly

Signatures Of The Dead (Faith Hunter) 4.5 stars - (Skinwalker #0.5) The POV in this is from Jane's witchy friend, Molly, but Jane still plays a big role. I love this series, highly recommended. A group of rogue vamps killed a family near where Molly and her family live, and their cop friend, Brax, has asked her to help him find them using her Earth Witch powers. Good action as usually, but it was nice to see things from a different perspective.

Cajun with Fangs - This is the one I read this book for. It serves as the lead-in to Death's Rival.

Have Stakes, Will Travel is a collection of four short stories from the Jane Yellowrock series and written by Faith Hunter, which was collected and published after Raven Cursed, but three of the four stories takes place before Skinwalkter, the first book. To avoid spoilers, it is best to read this anthology after Raven Cursed as there is one story "Cajun With Fangs" takes place some time after the fourth book.

For the most part, I really like these short stories, while one does not really need to read this book to continue with the series, it is highly worth it, to get the greater sense of the Jane Yellowrock universe. All the short stories were written well and comparatively speaking about the same level of enjoyment for me.

All in all, Have Stakes, Will Travel is a wonderful collection of short stories that expands and strengthens the fictional universe. It expands the stories of major characters and relationships in the series.

This was okay. I like the characters. The stories, themselves are okay, but more so because I love the relationships progressing.

I should've read it BEFORE the previous book I read in this series, but it really didn't effect it too much.

Great stories

I love the world of Jane Yellowrock, and all her friends. Be they Witches, Vampires, or any other supernatural creature. I love any story with Molly Trueblood, and her family in it. She, along with her Big Bear of a husband have such a crazy relationship. Full of highs, and tear inducing lows. My favorite was the war between the Vampires, and Witches out in a deep swampy area. Jane as a peacemaker!!! Who would have ever seen that coming. I really loved this collection of short stories.

Excellent collection of Jane Yellowrock Shorts!

This is a very well-written collection of short stories about Jane Yellowrock and her best friend the witch couple Everharts. It expounds on an event in Jane's past that is referenced a number of times in her novels. It also gives insight into different time periods in Jane's past.

A very worth while read for every Jane Yellowrock fan!

Having only recently discovered the Jane Yellowrock series, I made it to book 9 before stumbling across the reading guide and realising there was a plethora of short stories available, and from other characters POV's as well! I'm so thrilled!!!! Making my way through all of these before I move onto the main books again. This collection contains stories from Beast, Molly's and Jane's POV. I love reading anything from Beast, so even though that story was super short, it was still fun to read.

Awesome collection of short stories!

I enjoyed all the short stories! It was so much fun to see some early Jane history! The last story was the best of them all! Who would ever think Jane and a rogue Clanmaster would be discussing the kinds and quality of different types of tea! Sorry I’m a tea gal myself but gotta be a mug and not a dainty cups!

All of these are available if on audible as part of the included. There are a number of fun and interesting stories that really add to Jane's story and also to Rick's past. It really allows more to exploration into the world of Yellowrock and assists massively with the world building. Short and easy reads with different places in the timelines.
