טאוב למד בבית הספר התיכון שליד האוניברסיטה בירושלים. בצעירותו, הגיש בערוץ הראשון את רצועת תכניות הילדים וכן מספר תכניות בגלי צה"ל, בהן "ציפורי לילה". למד לתואר ראשון ושני בהיסטוריה באוניברסיטת תל אביב, ולתואר דוקטור באוניברסיטת רטגרס בניו ג'רזי. עבודת הדוקטורט שלו עוסקת בהגותו של הפילוסוף האמריקני ריצ'רד רורטי.
ערך את כתב העת לספרות ולחברה "מקרוב" יחד עם נסים קלדרון, וכותב קבוע במדור הדעות של ידיעות אחרונות. הוא משתתף קבוע בתוכנית "מועצת החכמים" בערוץ 10, ומשמש כחבר בוועד המנהל של מרכז מציל"ה למחשבה ציונית, יהודית, ליברלית והומניסטית. הוא מלמד בבית הספר למדיניות ציבורית ובחוג לתקשורת באוניברסיטה העברית.
כתב גם ספרי ילדים. על ספרו "המכשפה מרחוב מלצ'ט 3" זכה בפרס זאב לספרות ילדים ונוער לשנת תשס"א (2000-2001), ועובד לסרט טלוויזיה בבימוייה של דינה ריקליס.

nice and authentic on the life of down and out TelAviv. sharp eye and good writer

This may be the Israeli version of New Noir. Set mostly in the dark underworld of Tel Aviv: strip joints and bars, this is a story about backstabbing, conspiracy, violence, hedonism, exploitation and sex. I haven't seen the TV adaptation yet because I wanted to read the book first. Gadi Taub did a thorough research and it shows. Sometimes the story drags and the minimalistic delivery is tiring. The ending left some questions unanswered and felt abrupt to me. It (the ending) manages to be both a release and a menace. The bottom line: Not a masterpiece, but a realistic and suspenseful novel.
