All Nico wants is to leave his fame behind for a bit and enjoy a relaxing vacation. His trip to Belize starts off promisingly, but it all goes wrong quickly when he accidentally ruins the plans of Patrick, an ex-pat in the middle of an illegal deal. Patrick takes Nico hostage, hoping to recover his loss, and if Nico wants to regain his freedom he'll have to do exactly what Patrick says—including, apparently, a bit of cross-dressing.
A famous rock star, marauding pirates, stolen jade, a kidnapping, a vacation in Belize gone awry, and sex on the wild sea. Oh, what delicious fun!
Nico should have listened to his manager and taken at least his bodyguard with him, but he wanted to get away from it all and enjoy a little privacy away from his screaming fans. So he takes what he thinks is a water taxi only to find himself stripped to his boxers and tied up by the boat’s crew. It turns out the captain of the boat is someone familiar to Nico. Just the day before, Nico was visiting the Mayan ruins when he stumbled while going up the stairs and fell right into the man, knocking over his bag of rocks and earning an angry glare.
Nico’s apology isn’t enough. That bag of rocks contained precious jade and the captain, Patrick, has a plan to recover his losses which involves Nico dressing up like his ex-girlfriend, Grace, meeting with her liaison early and intercepting a shipment of jade she intended to collect. When the plans fall apart and Grace sets eyes on Nico and immediately recognizes him, she sees dollar signs. So off he goes on another boat, a hostage once more. But Nico is determined to escape and uses his feminine wiles to gain advantage.
I totally loved Nico and Patrick! Even though they were enemies, there was an attraction there right from the beginning. Nico fought fiercely and made several aborted escape attempts, unwittingly bringing him and Patrick closer. Patrick was very protective of Nico, fully aware that his androgynous beauty was pleasing to the more unsavory crew members. There was plenty of action, adventure, and nail-biting moments. This was a fun, exciting and sexy story with an ending filled with possibilities.
Captive is the first book I've read by Remy Jensen and despite my forced reservations about reading capture books (because I never seem to learn my lesson and I always do and they usually bother me), I couldn't deny this one. I mean, it's got a pretty boy rocker! I couldn't say no. And I'm glad I didn't, because I found this story to be a fun romp across the Caribbean seas with action, and more action (if you know what I mean) with a dashing, well… contemporary pirate.
It took Nico time to wear down his manager and get him to agree to Nico taking a solo vacation without his bodyguard. He needs some time away and after all, he's just going to be sipping mai tai's on the beach in Belize. There's no danger. But when he finds himself tied to the masthead when the water taxi turned out to be a trap, full of pirates bent on revenge, he knows he made a mistake. What can he do? The men are lecherous and he looks very much like a pretty woman to a bunch of roughneck sailors. His savior (and jailor) comes in the form of the captain of the boat and leader of their plot to smuggle illegal jade, a man who seems to be American (with yummy dreads) and no older than him. Patrick is an enigma, and Nico can't decide whether to hate him or lust after him. Sure, maybe he didn't want to be ravaged at first, but when Patrick firmly enforces his chastity, well… things have changed.
As you can see from my summary of the story, the best part of this story is that it doesn't take itself seriously, however it isn't over the top. It isn't really making fun of itself, but Nico is such a subtly flamboyant man that "stockholm syndrome" suddenly sounds like an adventure. Of course, subtly flamboyant is difficult to describe, but what I mean is that Nico has a natural vivacity that draws people to him, probably part of the reason he's so engaging on the stage. But it shows itself more naturally on the boat, because no matter what Nico is doing, snarling at the men around him or dressed in drag, he's engaging and likable without even trying.
So that made this story quite a bit of fun to read. They have adventures, of course, which I won't really get into, but the real story is in the growing romance between Nico and Patrick. I would have liked a little more detail about Patrick's past and the reason he's a "pirate" as Nico calls him but which he adamantly denies. He is, however, on the run and unable to return to America, and I would have liked more detail about what exactly he was running from. While we get a little bit of the picture, we don't get much more than that. I do appreciate, however, that the ending takes a somewhat more realistic turn than I expected. It ends with a firm HFN and maybe an HEA, depending on your opinion, but not without time and difficulty. There isn't a quick and easy ride off into the sunset (or, I should say sail), but rather at least an attempt to not demand the reader suspend too much disbelief.
Really, though, this was just a fun read. I enjoyed Nico the most of course, but Patrick as well and liked that their relationship takes central stage but with a backdrop of their adventures, instead of more emphasis in other directions. The sex is incredibly steamy. So I'd recommend this story for a light hearted tale when you get the winter blues. The sunshine and azure seas of Belize will entice you to take a 30 minute vacation with sexy men with dreads and small, lithe rockers with too much attitude.
How perfect that I was able to find a book for pirate week that wasn’t a swashbuckling historical! Not only that, but this one takes place in my favorite vacationing spot of Belize!
Poor Nico just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Granted, he probably shouldn’t have been traveling alone, but anyway, he is taken aboard a boat by a group of men being captained by Patrick.
Patrick is trying to exact some revenge on his ex, the woman who forced Patrick into his ex-pat status, by stealing gems out from under her. His plan now includes using Nico as a fill in for his ex to make the pickup of the gems. Patrick promises to free Nico after he completes this job.
As they wait for the meeting, the two become closer after a few events show Nico that there is more to Patrick than the dangerous criminal he portrays. Their feelings grow, and Nico shows Patrick what it’s like to be with another man. At this point, Patrick has no idea who Nico actually is, which is one of the things that has enabled Nico to become so enamored by Patrick. He is finally with someone who is doing it to be with Nico the person, not Nico the rich rock star.
The tags make this story sound much darker than it actually is. It was a really sweet story with very little violence or abuse. Neither MC ends up even being capable of shooting anyone, and at the end of the day, everyone does the right thing and love prevails. This wasn’t quite what I was expecting when I picked this story, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It was entertaining, sexy and sweet. And, I was happy to see the Belize details were so accurate, right down to the Belikin!
3.5 stars rounded down to 3 because I don't like the whole Stockholm Syndrome thing being ignored. I understand the motivations of the pirate but I don't think kidnapping was necessary or okay.
On his vacation in Belize, where he hopes no one will recognise him, the singer Nico gets more than he bargained for. First he gets kidnapped after ruining one part of his kidnapper’s plans to get back at his ex-girlfriend. His kidnaper, Patrick is not working alone and the crew, especially the sleazy Slade, is showing great interest in a "closer" relationship with Nico. Sleeping in Patrick’s cabin seems like the lesser evil, even if Nico is not 100% sure about that. Patrick offers Nico a deal, help him in his plans and pretend to be the former mentioned girlfriend to accept a package and he will let Nico go. Of course nothing goes like planed.
Nico is an interesting character, who doesn't give up easily and is quite charming. I liked that he tried to escape and didn't just meekly go down. Patrick didn't know what hit him, because Nico might look la bit girly, but he is quite spirited and challenges Patrick’s authority, and actually rescues them from a tough situation and proves that he is more than his voice or his looks.
The story is pretty fast paced and I didn't understand why Nico was jealous about Patrick’s ex, when he was told about her the next day after his capture. Patrick is not the evil master mind, he really isn't that (couldn't even conceive of shooting said evil ex after she captured them), but still why would one feel anything like possessiveness about one's kidnapper? Or play guide for the guy one captured a few days ago. There were no big emotional conversations, revelations or anything; Nico talked more with other guys about personal things than with Patrick, so I don't know where Nico's feelings for Patrick are coming from.
That said, it's kind of fun to read, all is happening very fast and the evil guys are super incompetent and that's not only Patrick, I'm talking about. A spunky, flamboyant superstar kicks some aspiring pirates and gets his man in the end. I would recommend it as a vacation read, most of it is sunny, light and humorous, some aspects are not, like the attempted rape but you simply knew that Patrick would come to the rescue. ;)
I say surprisingly because it is getting harder and harder for me to find a short story/short novella in mm genre which would satisfy me. More often than not I end up thinking that short story looks more like an outline for the novel and it is frustrating.
Well, since I bought this story on the strength of good review by somebody whose tastes I trust, I guess I should not be that surprised :)
This story feels amazingly complete with 18000 words. Oh the love story is basically just starting, but I for once thought that it is believable that they would have a future together. I would call the ending strong HFN.
I have a love/hate relationship with capture stories - this one worked for me very well, partly because it is on the lighter side and characters making subtle fun of some usual plot developments in those stories was funny. Nico thinking at some point that he has Stockholm Syndrome was hilarious for example.
I liked Patrick too, quite a lot, but Nico was wonderful, was very pleased to see that the writer did not portray him as stupid, Nico is actually sharp and observant.
I've got a reaaally good question. Why did the jade shatter on the pyramid? I mean, jade. Jade. Part of why jade was prized was because it was pretty durable. According to a quick google search, jade is a hardness of anywhere between 6 to 7. Mayan pyramids, as far as I can tell, are usually made of adobe mud and stone. Unnamed stone, sure, but one source said limestone, which, according to many internet sources, is probably about a 3 on the Moh's scale. Why, then, is jade shattering on a Mayan pyramid. And why the hell was he carrying jade up and down Mayan pyramids? Seems a pretty stupid place for a dead drop, if you ask me, and an equally stupid place for live trading. Also, how was he carrying them? Sounds like of like he was just walking around with them in his hands. So, we have very valuable, expensive to obtain, and illegal to export jade...that the dude's apparently just carrying around in the open, and also shatters upon impact with limestone.
I dunno what you were trading in, dude, but it sounds like you got fleeced, man, 'cause that don't sound like no jade I've ever heard of. I mean, I've got this little jade fish medallion thing and I've dropped it before by accident and it's come away with nary a scratch. Maybe he had some really shoddy jade with tons of cleavage. I still don't see how it would shatter into powder, though. Nothing I know of really shatters into powder, except maybe talc.
Also, I swear I've read this before. Don't remember if I wrote a thing, though, so I won't list this as another case of mysteriously disappearing review.
You know what, no I've read this before. And it's still kind of boring the second time around. Tch. Shattering jade... Indeed.
Captive is like taking a trip to a tropical island in the middle of the cold season - at least, that's what it was like for me! Nico is an engaging character and I was swept away with him on his not-so-fun adventure. He was tough and stood up for himself, and I enjoyed the way he sassed his captors, particularly the handsome Patrick. Remy spun a tale that thoroughly captured my attention. Things played out differently from what readers might expect from this scenario, and it was a satisfying turn of events. I enjoyed the charge between Nico and Patrick, as well as the way they were drawn together despite the circumstances that would reasonably keep them apart. Very sexy story, tightly paced and a quick read, but very enjoyable for that.
When "pirate captain" Patrick kidnaps Nico, he doesn't know that Nico is a famous rock star. No, Patrick needs Nico for a caper scheme. During the days o his captivity, Nico and Patrick get closer together and finally give in to the attraction building between them. But what kind of future can there be for a pirate and a rock star? This was an entertaining fast read. Full of incredulities of course, but in a fun, escapism way.
I love the chemistry between the two MCs and how it overcomes the circumstances surrounding them. I actually wish the story was a bit longer, because I really enjoyed their interactions and I'd have loved to learn a bit more about Patrick and Nico, but the story does well with what the author has chosen to show. I can't wait to see what else the author will share with us!
Relationship development seemed a bit rushed to me but other than that a good read. I liked that Nico knew how to handle a gun and take control when the time called for it. He was a bag of surprises and well suited to Patrick who also pulled his own weight.
