Taste it and you will get a desire for it.
—Irish Proverb
Some times you don't desire it . This book was a OK for me . Lets say the story didn't invoke any strong emotional response from my brain or my heart . Both main characters {Kylie & Michael} are good but not alluring or captivating . The story sometimes disconnected and just starts at some other situations,I felt what happened all of a sudden . At no point in this book I was completely engrossing. So 2 stars
Michael Kilbride is a 32 years old ex convict released from jail after 14 years for terrorist acts, which he didn't not commit but accepted the guilt as his penance or atonement due to his unconscious involvement resulted in the death of innocent children and people.
Kylie O'Shea is a 24 years primary teacher at Gaelscoil Pearse—one of the local All-Irish schools ,whose father Black Johnny O'Shea who has cheated the towns people due to his housing scheme and a drunkard.

Michael Kilbride moves in with his sister Vi in a small irish town of Ballymuir ,after being released from the prison.Michael gets into argument with his sister Vi over the money his grandmother has left for him and in anger walks away from this home , he just kept on walking in anger that's when Michael notices a Kylie in a field clearing rocks . Michael meets Kylie by sheer co incident or destiny we can say . Kylie asks Michael for help and then offers him food for the aid, this how their friendship begins.
Michael & Kylie both have suffered in their past .Michael as 18 years old who fell in love with Dervla Rourke who just seduced him to transport explosives in his car . Dervla Rourke and Brian Rourke{her so called brother who is actually her lover}belonged to a terrorist cell who blew up a building where many innocent children were killed . Kylie had been raped by her fathers associate when she was 18 . Both of then are virtually or basically virgins .
Michael's past is reveled in the small town, where everyone in the town dislikes him and disowns him . Michael is shown as a strong character when he faces the town people,as he tries to start his life as a carpenter. Michael's past catches up with him and there are anonymous menacing phone calls to his sisters house ,he tracks down Brian Rourke and after giving him a bashing and tells Brian to him alone to live peacefully . Brian Rourke is murdered and Michael is charged with his murder, which he escapes after the authorities find the real culprit . Kylie also gives testimony that she was with him all night when the crime happened.
Kylie keeps her affair with Michael as secret from towns people cause she afraid of losing her job which is her sole means of income , but after Michaels arrest she announces that she loves Michael in the middle of the towns pub.
The way both main characters express love for each other Kylie in the heat of anger and Michael as he proposes marriage ,after bashing Brian Rourke he realizes that he want a life with Kylie. Its pretty easy going ,there are no grand gestures in this book as far as concerned with declarations of love goes .
There are too many small stories that take place in the main story. The reader almost fells disconnected with the whole plot . Gerry Flynn as Kylie's protector her first crush a witness to her rape who harasses Michael and follows him around the town.Pat and Danny Michael's brothers who come to visit him. Michael's mother and her present resentment , bitterness. Michael family's cold shoulder as he was a teenager . Kylie's father , Brian Rourke and many more that we see in this book.

Problem is that it feels like patch work not a whole single story at all there are too many big holes in the plot that the author never seems to even acknowledge.I did not connect to both the main characters or to the secondary characters at all , may be Dorien Kelly could have done better in my opinion.

I would like to say the same thing about this story because its complicated and incomprehensible

I thought the book read slowly - meaning, I never really rushed back to pick it up, although when I did read go back to it, I would become engaged in the story very easily. I LOVED the heroine and how she stood by her man when everyone else in the town believed the lies about his past, even to the point of risking her job with a brutually frank confession from the top of the bar in the local drinking hole. Now, it took her some time to get to that point, but once she did - watch out! The book was honest, in that, relationships are fluid and sometimes, you don't always do the right thing in the beginning of a relationship - when you are still finding your way.

Michael, the hero of the book, has just been released from prison for a crime he did not commit. The only person who believes in his innocence is his larger-than-life sister, an artist and talk of the town in her own right. She moves him into her house when no one else will give him a chance...until, on a random walk, he meets Kylie, a schoolteacher in town with a past of her own. Together, they become a force to be reckoned with and they take the reader along for the journey. How they face down the town, while learning to love and accept each other, is the stuff romance novels should be made of.

I would love to see the series continue, as there are some secondary characters that are just BEGGING for their own stories.

What a wonderful story!

I really liked the characters, Kylie O’Shea such strength for a school teacher/wall flower (as she sees herself), and Michael Kilbride, was quite a tortured soul, but together they are such a wonderful couple. They healed each other, reminded each other how to love and completed each other beautifully. Violet Kilbride, what to say about her…loved her, she is a fabulous character. She reminds me of my best friend. Life in Ballymuir wouldn’t be the same without her. The entire supporting cast is funny, witty and full of blarney.

The setting was great with just enough detail to give you a nice picture. The Irish proverb, toast and prayer at the beginning of each chapter, I found myself looking forward to hw they would out within the chapters. What an intuitive touch.

If you are looking for a classic romance, this is a marvelous read.

Really enjoyed this one. Well written with a good feel for the country and the characters. Flawed hero. Brave heroine. Nice storyline.

I was absolutely surprised with the Ballymuir Series by Dorien Kelly. I fell in love with each of the characters and cheered them all on. All of them have a past and, as the story unfolds, your heart breaks and your smile gets bigger. The characters, the back-ground and the story-lines are so true to life, that I started hearing the words with an Irish Brogue and could picture the countryside, the weather and the people deep in my minds eye. The story of Kylie and Michael starts this trilogy and you won’t be disappointed with either of them, alone or as a couple.

Kylie O’Shea is a quite, reserved schoolteacher. The daughter of Black Johnny O’Shea, a swindler, a thief and a drunkard. Since her Da’s imprisonment, she has lived a life of solitude, teaching children to speak Irish and paying back the citizens of Ballymuir the money that her father took from them. She’s kind and loving and a wee bit trusting. When she meets Michael for the first time, she see’s a man with a heavy but kind heart. A handsome man who puts her heart aflutter – something that hasn’t happened in her adult life. She feels the connection and trusts him completely. But, she is so afraid to open up to any one. What will he think of her when he finds out about her past, who her Da is and why everyone thinks she will be the last bride in Ballymuir? She also doubts that she can be the woman that Michael needs to stand along side of him. But, for the love that is in her heart for him, she will change, she will stand up to the townspeople, she will defend him with her life if need be.

Michael Kilbride is a haunted man. Dreams from his past and the dream woman of his present constantly battle inside of him. How can he love and expect to be loved back by a woman like Kylie? He has nothing to give her, a past that is tainted and a future that is bleak. It’s been a long time since he has been in Ballymuir and no one there will forgive him his sins. His parents do not even want him in their presence. Thank God for his sister Vi and the love that she has for him. Always his champion, Vi has the gift of “sight” and knows that he has a long and hard road ahead of him. But, she also sees that he has a bright and wonderful future – now to get him to see it, believe it and live it. As his past comes back to haunt him yet again, he knows that the only thing that he wants to do is protect those that he loves the most, Kylie, Vi, Pat and Danny. No matter what he has to do, he will keep them safe.

As this story unfolds, you find yourself wondering how Kylie and Michael will overcome all that they have against them. Her past, his past and the people of Ballymuir with their wagging tongues. They find a way when they finally start opening up and confiding in each other. They learn that falling in love may be easy, that the physical pleasures may be grand, and that the everlasting love that they feel for each other will overcome all obstacles. “The Last Bride of Ballymuir” was gracefully written and brings all the characters together as a cohesive unit. Ms. Kelly brought Ireland alive with her colorful storytelling and descriptions. Kylie and Michael deserved and earned their Happily Ever After and I was so glad to have witnessed it.

I love Ireland and anything Celtic. I think that Dorien Kelly has an incredible knack with creating characters and settings that make you feel the mist of Ireland's rain as you are reading the book. The language, setting, characterization, and feel of the book are incredibly done. Kylie and Michael are so well done with true conflicts that have you fighting for them with all of your heart. A truly great read!

I was hoping to read about Ireland and the towns and people, but not much was said about them. I had the hardest time reading this book, don't know why but I would have to go back and reread sentences to try to understand the meaning of what was be talked about. Some things just didn't make sense to me. The book had a good story line but was not presented well. I felt there was to much repeating the same things over and over and then it ends. Well the Epilogue did answer some questions.

This book is missing something. You never really feel a connection to the characters. In other books you will see a little of the day to day activities of the characters, listen to their thoughts as they go about their activities. But in this book I feel that lacking. If the characters aren't together, they were a few paragraphs ago or will be in the next few.

I'm not big on contemporary, so I was a bit hesitant about this one.

I liked the characters, but.. there was just SOMETHING missing. Plus, I really didn't like the hint of paranormal -- it just didn't fit in with the rest of the novel...

I'll have to think on it a bit more before my final review.

For now, 3.5/5

Great, sweet read! I needed something a little lighter that JR Ward's Crave for a night alone, and this fit the bill perfectly! I'll add more Dorien Kelly to my to-read list!

Stories like this make me long for my own place in Ireland! While the start of the relationship between the two main characters was a little far fetched the rest of the story developed nicely. A lovely read.

For me, there wasn't enough captivation to compel me to complete this book. I was confused and bored and quite frankly dropped it to find something that would fill me with humorous entertainment and charm.

Some may find this read enjoyable, but it was not my cup of tea!

I liked this book to a certain point, and then it dragged on and on. The conflict was telegraphed and I just wanted to get past it to a resolution that was too long in coming.

Weak writing

The story did not transition smoothly from one segment to another. Seemed as if the author just wanted to get through the story.

The last bride of ballymuir

2. *

A pleasant read- the kind of book you would read on holiday that you don't have to pay a lot of close attention to.
The story is about prejudice and redemption. Both the mani characters are struggling to be accepted in the small town of Ballumuir due to their past events.
The town seems quite conservative in values and narrow minded in the acts of gossiping and shunning both michael and kylie. Michael due to time in prison for links with the IRA (he was falsely accused and innocent ) and kylie, a sheltered girl whose father is also in prison due to fraud involving the money of many towns people

I liked the way the characters grew both Michael and kylie.
Michael the angry young man who hated everything and everyone at the beginning of the book, grew into a loving hardworking man who is fiercely protective of his family.
Kylie aswell grew from a timid shy girl who kept away from most people embarrassed by her fathers sin and evasive of men due to her rape aged 18 also developed confidence and a bit of a temper.
There were sad angsty moments in the book when michael was ignored and unwelcome in certain premises. How he would instantly become scared , worried and try to remove himself from places if he spotted any town folks around. You could see the spiral of fear, anger and despair he was stuck in.
However i found bits of the story moving too slowly. There were a few lulls in the story where nothing really happened and I would several times check what page i was on and how much of the book was left.
Also there were quite a few word in irish or irish slangs that I didn't understand and had to google the words.
All in all a pleasant easy not overly taxing read.

Cover/Title: The cover definitely makes me think bride and love. The reader definitely gets the idea that there is romance in this book.

Characters: I liked most of the characters. I felt bad for poor Michael. Gerry Flynn annoyed me.

Plot: The plot revolved around two people whose lives were damaged in different ways. I love how they turn toward each other to heal and move on.

Overall: This is a sweet romance about overcoming your past and moving forward. It was a bit slow but worth the read if you are in the mood for a romance book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

The story was sweet in many ways and Michael and Kylie’s romance had its tender moments. But there were also things that bothered me. People in town froze Michael out and judged him harshly, which was hard to read. Kylie’s past was handled poorly by some characters — especially Gerry, who treated her horribly, believed the worst of her without ever finding out the truth, and even hit her near the end. I had hoped he’d face real consequences for how he acted, but instead it was brushed over.

The story and characters were wonderful, even with the hard times & truths revealed. What made this book so difficult to read, was sexual tension, innuendos, and too much dressing and undressing with eyes, then fingers. There were a few mild sex scenes, but I kept hoping the sexual activities that appeared in almost every page after the first chapter, would disappear. Unfortunately, it never stopped.

I didn't like this as well as I expected to. There was nothing wrong with the writing, per se -- at least, if there were grammatical and/or spelling errors, there weren't enough to rouse my ire -- but I just couldn't get invested in the story or the two main characters. I won't be looking for the other books in the series.

Well written if a little slow

While I enjoyed the storyline and the characters—primary and secondary—it moved really slowly. The characters were stuck in their more negative traits which made them somewhat one dimensional. I am not interested in reading further books In the series.

Surprise! Surprise!

What started out as a mundane saga turned into a marvelous story of betrayal and loss to redemption and joy. Through many hardships along the way, true love winds its way through hearts of individuals and a small Irish village. This is a beautifully woven story which merits anyone’s love of reading!

A Love Born in Ireland

Agter spending time in the prison known as the Maze (which is where the Irish Freedom Fighters were sent when captured), Michael came to Ballymuur to be with his sister. And he is in for a rough time but then he meets Kiley, and he world begins to show some hope. *** The Maze movie 2017 if you want to know more. I watched the movie.

Couldn’t put it down.....

This was a great novel. Felt like I was in Ireland and could feel the atmosphere of the area as I read. The countrysides, the pubs and the people, all made me feel kinda of Irish.

Good story

This was a good story but hard to get through. There would be moments where I would read 20-40 pages, and others where a single page took me 10-20 minutes. Took me several months to finish off and on as it never truly hooked me.

Wonderful novel

Sweet and perfectly real! I could hear the characters as they spoke as if I were there. The only criticism I can think of is I had to reread one part (very small) to understand it....I still didn't. But it didn't take away from the over all story. Love this book.

Another book I supposedly read back in 2012 per my Kindle. Don’t remember anything of it and tbh I don’t have any desire to read it again to find out what this is about.

Putting it on the DNF pile as I can’t say for certain what I would rate this or even if I’ve read it
