I was born and raised in Northcentral Kansas. I'm a farmer's daughter, but I now make my home in the city of Wichita. I'm an RN. Neonatal nursing has been the main focus of my career. What can I say? I love babies. I was invited to the highschool graduation of a baby I took care of. Talk about making me feel old!
In June of 2011 I became a widow after my husband of 36 years and 11 months died from multiple brain tumors. It was a very sad time, but thanks to the three f's, my faith, my family and my friends, life is moving forward. I have four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren who all work at making me feel loved.
I'm the author of more than 30 books and I'm currently writing a series called The Brides of Amish Country for Love Inspired.
I usually don't rate 'Love Inspired' romances 4 stars. I usually enjoy them, but they're not intended to be great literature (which is fine . . . everyone needs a 'fluff read' now and again!). This one, however, I thought was worthy of the higher ranking. The love story in and of itself was sweet, and interesting, but nothing hugely unusual. What brought this book from a 'like' to a 'really like' was the living history part of it. The book centers around the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, which is a US Army unit out of Fort Riley, Kansas. They are a unit of active duty soldiers (not historical re-enactors) whose job it is to showcase the cavalry methods that were in use during the Civil War era. I'd never heard of this unit previously, and I found the explanations of what they do utterly fascinating!
Sergeant Lindsey Mandel is proud of her position with the Military Horse unit and glad her wounded brothers horse, is her mount. As she prepares for a performance at a college football game, she is approached by a man who tells her not to ride Dakota because he is lame in front leg. She disregards the advice and when she and Dakota take the first jump, he falls and lands on her arm. The result is a broken arm for her with nerve damage, but Dakota's injury is life threatening. Can the man who warned her be the only one who can help. It turns out the man is Dr. Brian Cutter and he has a new surgical procedure. Can God arrange everything needed to help Dakota? Then can God work everything out to get Lindsey and Dakota to DC in time for inauguration parade? Can God bring Lindsey and Brian to an understanding of the gift of love?
I enjoyed the fact that this novel was set in an unusual military unit. Lindsey was a great combination of tough and compassionate. I appreciated Brian's struggles with guilt, and they played out well. The minor characters were incredibly well drawn, but the conflicts and resolution at the end felt like they came about a bit too easily.
ebook quick read. (I'm not from the USA so the patriotism didn't rub off) however, I can see how values and commitment are made for those in the service of country. Brian and Lindsey's story.
I really enjoyed this book. Of course it centered on horses and the military, so it was probably a safe bet I'd at least like the book. I can't say that the book offered anything especially ground breaking, but I didn't read the book expecting that. I knew this was romance and as such went into the book simply looking for a nice story. And this book delivered that. I really found myself drawn into the book, but I think it had more to do with the horse than the characters.
rabck box from svoight 09/11; different romance - this one between an army sargeant in the Calvary color guard unit, who has a horse with a broken leg, and the veterinarian, still scarred over the car accident that cost his wife her life. Of course, all is well and they fall in love. OK to pass on to booklady for her table.
Lindsey's brother Danny was wounded in action. He donates his horse to Lindsey's unit and when Lindsey and Dakota both take a terrible fall, Dr Brian Cutter is the Vet that helps Dakota instead of putting him down.
