Five tales where life takes a turn for . . . well, you decide.
Bed of Thorns - She's rich. She's bored. Time for some excitement. Little does she know where her latest relationship with someone a tad too young and handsome will lead.
In His Shoes - How do you get even when justice isn't served? And if you succeed, what then? In the end life seems to have a way of working these things out for all concerned.
R.I.P. Katherine Colton - A screen siren who committed suicide in 1970 is celebrated even today. But the question lingers. Did she kill herself? This movie star's greatest fan just has to know.
The Miracle - If you want something bad enough -- like being the person you've always admired -- can your wish come true? Maybe so. But not necessarily in the way you think.
Skyglow Undercover - He's sent undercover in what used to be one of New York City's grandest hotels. Problem is, he knows nothing more than that. He'll find out why, all in good time.
Roberta Smith is an award-winning author. She loves a good ghost story. So that's what she writes. Her novel "The Haunting of Peter Ashton" placed as a finalist in the Horror: Paranormal/Supernatural genre of the 2023 American Fiction Awards. Her novel, "Simone's Ghosts" won the 2017 Hollywood Book Festival's grand prize.
Loved the last story best. Talk about what in the world was going on in her head that day. Kudos to the strange, crazed imagination of Roberta Smith. Book for anyone who loves short stories in the fashion of Poe...but modern and completely amazing.
This book is made up of a few short stories that entertain and surprise - not ghost stories, more like short thrillers. The theme of the entire book is a little on the dark side, which made it fun because you got to escape reality for a few minutes at a time. The entire thing is only 79 pages which makes it a quick read, and the chapters are each around 20-or-so pages which provides frequent stopping points as each story is completely unrelated to the last.
I enjoyed the first story, Bed of Thorns, the most. A rich woman getting caught up in crime - can't go wrong. The second story, In His Shoes, provides my favorite quote from the book: "Yes, my thought was uncomplicated: You hurt someone, you shouldn't be out to do it again. If sophistication meant believing that was wrong, okay, I'd be a simpleton."
There are a few distracting typos, and I found the second to last story a little too strange. These stories aren't so scary that they will keep you up at night, so feel free to read in bed! It's a good book for Halloween-time, or any time you want to get your mind off of something for a little while.
I'm the author. 5 stars? What can I say? If you like strange stories that are on the dark side, you'll like this book. Here are five tales that reach into the realm of the psychological, twisted, ironic and macabre.
Five short stories that all kept me intrigued and sorry that the story ended. I especially liked RIP Katherine Colton. Definitely interesting stories and would love to see them made into full fledged novels with all the twists and turns. Great writing! I received this book from Goodreads.com.
