Born and raised in Indiana, Tara Neideffer grew up with a fascination for the macabre. She is always on the hunt for a good ghost story and has a morbid obsession with watching murder mystery shows. She also has a love for animals, especially horses, and as a child she could be found in the saddle, running her horse at full speed through open fields. When she's not busy writing, she's taking care of her animals, spending time with her family, or reading. She still lives in a small town in Indiana, hunting ghosts and taking care of her daughter.

Lizzie had been drinking when she saw her boyfriend, Michael, with someone else in the bar. She ran out and jumped in her car, even though she knew she shouldn't be driving. She was tipsy and crying, barely able to see where she was going. She usually slowed down when she approached that certain area of the road, because of the fog, but not tonight. She just wanted to get home.
Then she heard thump-thump. Oh no. She checked her tires and saw blood on the front of her car. Great, she had hit an animal, but it was so much worse than that - a man. She panicked, what to do. She proceeded to drag him off the road and into the woods. Afterwards, she jumped in her car and drove home.
Once she got home, she even acted like a murderer. She changed her clothes and cleaned up, hiding any evidence of the accident. She saw a bloody hand print smeared on the wall and cleaned that up too. All the while, a feeling of impending doom hung over her.
Her friend, Haley, called to make sure she arrived home okay. As they talked, Lizzie reached for her necklace. It was her good luck charm and she was always reaching for it, but now it was missing. Where could she have lost it?
At work, she waited on a man wearing a ball cap. Strange things happened. She saw spiders crawling all over him. When she questioned him about what he said to her, he denied saying the things she knew she had heard him say,
"can't hide it, haunt you until you die".
Was she hallucinating?
She headed home and forgot to detour around the accident site. She had been avoiding the area ever since "it" had happened. As she approached the spot, she saw him.
Was he haunting her? Was her mind playing tricks on her? She knew something was very wrong.
When Lizzie went to work the next night, Haley told her about the little girl who had been found in the woods near her house. She wondered about the man. Had he been found?
Michael, her boyfriend, had heard about the little girl, too, and became worried for Lizzie. He went to her workplace, the Tavern, and arranged to go home with her. She felt a sense of relief having him there, she wouldn't be alone and afraid.
Michael woke her from a nightmare she was having. The little girl was dead and warned her that the man was coming for her. It had felt so real to her. She wondered if it would ever be over.
In the morning, Michael became afraid, because it was so hard to wake her up. When he saw the marks around her neck he worried that he had choked her during their passionate lovemaking. She knew it wasn't him. Her nightmare had come to life. Should she tell him?
Michael had to go out of town for work, so she was alone again. She told him she would be fine, but she didn't really believe it.
She loved paranormal and horror movies, but she didn't believe in it. Until now. Now, she felt she was living it.
5 STARS - Would Buy It For Them (lol)
The cover is awesome. Eerie and foreboding. The spooky moon is indicative of what is to come.
The plot was suspenseful and grabbed me from the very beginning. Tara's description of Lizzie's nightmare was so realistic, it was believable. It could have been real. I knew something was coming, but what. My anticipation was such, that I was sitting forward on the couch, crunched up, waiting for the attack, or whatever was coming. It wouldn't be good. The hair on my arms stood up and I felt chills running down my back.
I hate spiders, so when I read this, I had to make a note of it:
"Spiders are messengers from the other side. When you see a lot of spiders it means something or someone on the other side is trying to tell you something and you're not listening."
When I first picked up the book, I thought - this is good, like a three. As I kept reading and the suspense and pace of the novel picked up, I thought - whoa, this is a solid four. Then I began racing through the pages as one thing after another began to happen. I read it in one sitting. The plot and writing were gripping and drew me deeper and deeper into the story.
This is Tara Neideffer's debut novel. I am constantly amazed at the quality of writing of so many indie authors and their debut novels.
Lizzie's story could happen to anyone, except maybe for the ghost part. A normal, upright, careful person makes one mistake that could ruin their life.
Michael was a two-timing cheater. Would Lizzie be able to forgive him for his mistake? Will they find their way back to each other?
The book made me think of Ghost Whisperer with Jessica Love Hewitt. Ghosts came to her for help and she was able to talk to them and see them, when others couldn't.
Tara Neideffer offered me a free copy in return for an honest and unbiased review, but when I checked my Kindle, I had already downloaded the book.
Talk about hitting the ground running, Deadly Road started off with one of the most serious mistakes a person can ever make and a test of their morals. When the accident happened, knocking over Lizzie's once controlled world into a living nightmare the horror of her choice floods her dreams with savage wild coyotes and flickering ghosts. Neiderffer had done a wonderful job bringing forth the terror of Lizzie's mind, having her question her reality as the images of the man she killed started to appear during her waking hours. It's a scary thought to really think about what you would do if you are put into her shoes, even after considering herself such a high morale person, to leave a body in the middle of the woods is a serious decision. Poor Lizzie panicked in the split moment that her world came unfolded and now she is tormented again and again for it. Even despite her faults Lizzie was a really likable and strong character.
For a bit i couldn't understand what the little girl had to do with the story, but obviously as the story progressed so did the truth behind the pair come into light. It was a very enjoyable read!
Lizzie Lawson made some seriously bad choices that have even worse consequences. Driving home after a night with friends, Lizzie is drunk, emotional, clearly not thinking straight. After a particularly close call while driving, you would think Lizzie would slow down on a dangerous stretch of road famous for having thick fog. You'd be wrong. Chalk it up to one of her bad choices and the outcome of that bad choice - she hits something. Upon closer inspection, turns out it's actually a someone. Something like that is bound to haunt a person and in Lizzie's case, you'd be correct.
Right off the bat, I wasn't fond of Lizzie, mostly because of her cowardice. She had the option to do the right thing and she took the selfish road and decided to save herself. That's never an endearing trait for a heroine. But I will say, I did warm up to her. She tried to make amends the best way she knew how, but can someone ever recover from something like what she's done? And then as the mystery unfolds, it all becomes clear.
The pacing of this book was quite fast; I intended to read for "just a little bit" and before you know it, I was done. I loved the creepiness that Tara wove through the story; aside from the haunting elements thrown in, there were also some random arachnid creeping about. I am a serious arachnophobe. Like seriously serious. Hyperventilating providing the spider is big enough and is looking at me. Or even just 30 feet away. The spider and I are not friends. We will never be friendly and one of the worst ones ever created are the wolf spiders, which the author kindly inserted into parts of the story. Harmless? Probably. Ugly as sin? Fo sho. Thanks for that, now I have the phantom crawlies because surely one popped out of the book and is now roaming around on me.
If I had to make one criticism, it would be that parts of the narrative were a bit repetitive. One example would be how Lizzie couldn't believe it was so late, she had to be at work soon. Then the story continues with Lizzie starting to rush because it's late and she needs to be at work. Same song and dance told twice, just with different words. With a little polish, that's an easy fix and being that I've already read one of Tara's later books, I can say that she's grown as an author and there wasn't any repetition in that particular book. It's always nice to see for yourself how authors grow with each book they produce and this author is a perfect example of that.
Bottom line - I recommend this if you are a fan of paranormal mysteries with just a touch of horror thrown in. This book also had a bit of romance, which I always appreciate since I'm a sucker for love :)
**Many thanks to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Well I really enjoyed this book from start to finish.
Basically Lizzie is driving home after catching her boyfriend with another women and hits and kills someone and pulls his body into the woods to hide the body, after which she is haunted by the man.
I loved the fact that within the first couple of pages the action started, no long winded chapters on the place, the people or anything just straight into the thick of it. The story was very fast flowing and blended together really well, there were no unnecessary bits that were not important to the story line. I liked that the fact that there were not too many characters to confuse things and that the story centered round the main ones.
Lizzie was a likable character and I found her to be an engaging character who as the story progressed and more things started happening to her she became a stronger character.
Michael was an ok character but at times I found I wanted to slap him. My favourite character had to Samsun and mainly because he reminded me of my dog in practically every way.
I liked the way the murders of the little girl and the man that Lizzie killed came together and how Lizzie reacted when she found out who and what he had done.
Over all I found this to be a gripping story and it contained a little bit of everything, a bit of horror, suspense and thrilling.
In Deadly Road we’re introduced to the main character, Lizzie, as she’s hurrying to get home after seeing her boyfriend dancing with another woman. On her drive home, there’s a section of the road that’s continually covered with fog at night. Under normal circumstances, Lizzie drives through it nice and slow, but due to her drama and a couple of drinks she decides getting home quickly is more important than safety. Big mistake.
When she hits and kills a man, her world threatens to crumble around her from the guilt of leaving him dead alongside the road. Things quickly become worse when he begins to visit her in her dreams and invades her home as a ghost. Being run over can piss someone off, and no more so than with this ghost, who has his own idea for revenge.
By making an unlikely friend, she has the chance to defend herself and save the souls of other innocents caught in the circle created by a powerful evil.
Deadly Road is dripping with description and the terror of an individual’s struggle to come to terms with something they did while also facing something greater. I could see King’s influence early on and enjoyed the various horror movie qualities found throughout it. From invading and attacking the heroine through her dreams ala Freddie Kruger to the dark and spooky woods with coyotes and spiders everywhere this has a little something for every horror fan.
For a first book Tara Neideffer did a great job with her writing. She got me right into the story immediately. Even better, she kept my interest through the whole book. The characters were well written and there were enough twists to keep you guessing. While I was quick to tie the little girl and the man together quite quickly, there was still enough mystery to find out there was even more to the story. There were times during the story though that I felt the sentence structure was not always the best and distracted me, however, not so much that I did not enjoy the book. It was only in a few spots.
What would you do if you hit a man late at night with alcohol in your system? That is the question Lizzie has to ask herself.
After seeing her boyfriend dancing with another woman Lizzie left in an emotional fury. On her way home her life would change forever. With the help from an unlikely source Lizzie deals with the demons of her decision.
This was a very good book. I highly recommended this book for everyone. I received this book free from the author for an honest review. I can honestly say she has a hit with this book.
Tara Neideffer is an excellent writer. She kept my interest through out her entire book it was that great of a read! Her characters are interesting, and unique. I love the detail she uses when her female character is witnessing/experiencing her nightmares and visions. I read her entire novel Deadly Road in one night! I totally recommend it!
This is a great concept and an interesting story, loved the moral dilemma that the main character faces. It's creepy and intense.
I gave this a three, (would have preferred a 3.5) because at times I found this a bit repetitive and rambling, and too much passive voice. With a good edit, tightening and reconstruction of sentences this would be an excellent book.
What a great read! Definitely didn't expect half the things that happened in this book but it was so good! If you love Paranormal/Crime books you'll LOVE this!
Also, I won this book here on goodreads from the authors contest!
I received this book free for my honest review, and reading it, I realized I didn't make a mistake in doing so. Deadly Road is fantastic in all ways possible, and it's clear Tara Neideffer is a talented author. Recommended.
really interesting book I would recommend this book to my friends that believe in the supernatural I enjoyed this book at first I was confused about the little girl but the further I read the less confused I was
