Dr. R.C. Sproul (1939–2017) was founder of Ligonier Ministries, an international Christian discipleship organization located near Orlando, Fla. He was founding pastor of Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, Fla., first president of Reformation Bible College, and executive editor of Tabletalk magazine.

Ligonier Ministries began in 1971 as the Ligonier Valley Study Center in Ligonier, Pa. In an effort to respond more effectively to the growing demand for Dr. Sproul’s teachings and the ministry’s other educational resources, the general offices were moved to Orlando in 1984, and the ministry was renamed.

Dr. Sproul’s radio program, Renewing Your Mind, is still broadcast daily on hundreds of radio stations around the world and can also be heard online. Dr. Sproul produced hundreds of lecture series and recorded numerous video series on subjects such as the history of philosophy, theology, Bible study, apologetics, and Christian living.

He contributed dozens of articles to national evangelical publications, spoke at conferences, churches, and academic institutions around the world, and wrote more than one hundred books, including The Holiness of God, Chosen by God, and Everyone’s a Theologian. He signed the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and wrote a commentary on that document. He also served as general editor of the Reformation Study Bible, previously known as the New Geneva Study Bible.

Dr. Sproul had a distinguished academic teaching career at various colleges and seminaries, including Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and Jackson, Miss. He was ordained as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America.

How many times have you started a 'Read the Bible In a Year' program? Have you been successful or have you found yourself falling behind at about Leviticus? Do you wish you had a better sense of what is found where in Scripture? This book is for you. Infused with nuggets of wisdom from renowned theologian R.C. Sproul and the pacing of best-selling author Robert Wolgemouth, this book reads like a novel while increasing your knowledge of the Bible. While many translations of the Bible cover thousands of pages, this book is a trim 400. It would make a fantastic addition to your devotional time this coming year.

And so, because we believe that the Bible is worth knowing about, we have written this book. If you have spent a lifetime in church, we hope there will be things that will be helpful to you in gaining the larger picture of Scripture. And if you're a beginner, we believe that you'll find this book to be extremely helpful in gaining a new and deeper understanding of God's story.

This is by far one of the best Bible walkthrough books I have read this far! Witty, informative and helpful. My only complaint is about the summaries. I personally found them unnecessary since it literally just rewrote what you had just read. Seemed a bit redundant. So, it is more like 4.5 stars. Still good.

Good strong readable review of what all these different books are about and how they all relate to a few clear storylines. Deftly written and entertaining. A good one to have on the bookcase or in the toolkit.

What's in the Bible: A Tour of Scripture from the Dust of Creation to the Glory of Revelation by R.C. Sproul and Robert Wolgemuth

My rating 4.2 stars

"What's in the Bible" by R.C. Sproul is a comprehensive and insightful guide that delves into the Christian Bible, offering readers an in-depth understanding of its structure, themes, and teachings. Renowned theologian R.C. Sproul, known for his ability to make complex theological concepts accessible to a broad audience, provides a clear and concise exploration of the Bible, making this book an excellent resource for both new and seasoned students of Scripture.

One of the standout features of the book is its structure. Sproul and Wolgemuth systematically examines each book of the Bible, providing historical context, authorship information, key themes, and major theological insights. This approach makes the book not only a guide to the contents of the Bible but also a tool for understanding the broader narrative of the Christian faith as revealed in Scripture.

The authors' writing is characterized by clarity and depth. They skillfully balance scholarly insight with practical application, ensuring that the book is not just informative but also relevant to daily life and spiritual growth. The explanations are thorough yet easy to understand, making complex theological concepts approachable for readers without a background in theology or biblical studies.

Moreover, "What's in the Bible" addresses key questions and challenges that readers might have about the Bible. It tackles issues such as apparent contradictions in Scripture, the relevance of ancient texts to modern life, and the process of biblical canonization. These discussions are particularly valuable for readers who may be skeptical or have doubts about the authenticity and authority of the Bible.

Another strength of the book is Sproul's use of historical and cultural context to illuminate the meaning of biblical texts. He provides insights into the historical background of the various books of the Bible, helping readers understand how cultural, historical, and geographical factors influence the interpretation of Scripture. This context adds depth to the biblical narrative and helps to clarify passages that might otherwise be difficult to understand.

However, it's important to note that the authors write from a Reformed theological perspective. While this perspective informs and enriches his interpretation of Scripture, readers from different theological traditions might find some of his interpretations specific to this viewpoint. Nonetheless, his respect for the biblical text and his commitment to sound theological interpretation are evident throughout the book.

In summary, "What's in the Bible" by R.C. Sproul and Robert Wolgemuth is an exceptional guide to the Christian Scriptures. It is comprehensive, insightful, and accessible, making it a valuable resource for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the Bible. Whether you are a new believer, a lifelong student of Scripture, or someone exploring the Christian faith, this book offers a wealth of knowledge and insight into the most influential book in human history. The authors' expertise and clear writing make this work a must-read for those wanting to explore the depths of biblical teaching.

The book is organized into chapters talking about each book or a group of books. The chapters are subdivided into smaller parts. I really like the way it’s organized for it makes it easy to keep track of the subject.

It briefly talks about the major characters and themes of the books in the Bible. It’s a wonderful refresher for those that might’ve forgotten the contents of what’s in the smaller books in both the old and New Testament. Great book to help find basic content for a Bible study.

Not R. C's Best

Honestly, it took a me a while to finish this book. Good Information, but highly repetitive. The summary of each chapter made it more difficult to read.

Just as it says in the title, this easy-to-read book takes you on a tour of sacred scripture.

What I admire most about "What's in the Bible?" is R.C.'s succinct explaining of key moments that define God's interaction with people.

Throughout the Bible you encounter many different people, but One stands out – Jesus Christ. He is the protagonist of and present in all of Scripture. This is what the co-authors do a masterful job of; they outline how God reveals Himself ever-more clearly in His Book, "from the dust of creation to the glory of Revelation."

Divided into seventeen chapters, each with a summary to remind you of what you've read, this book is enjoyable to peruse.

After finishing the book, I am left with a strong impression of God's character. He is gracious, patient, loving, yet at the same time holy, just, perfect, and altogether glorious. Praise God!

What's in the Bible is simply God's story, of which we are a part. Read it! Know the Protagonist! It is a worthwhile endeavour.

Anything RC Sproul writes is excellent, in my opinion. His sound doctrine mixed with his years of teaching and studying God's Word helps to make this book an excellent synopsis of major things in the Bible. Believers and skeptics alike should read what Sproul and his his writing companion Wolgemuth have to say in this book about the Book of Life.

Wonderful! This book is designed for those who have no Biblical background. Very easy to read and understand. I found it to be a great resource for teaching and learned new insights as well. Amazing amount of depth and interpretation in this short book. Has been reprinted under a different name, What's In The Bible: A Tour of Scripture From the Dust of Creation to The Glory of Revelation.
