A Practical Arrangement

Rate this book
Practical plans go awry when prim sensibilities unwittingly capture the heart of a scandalous seducer.

Miss Evangeline Grey, intelligent and sensible, has no desire to marry, her reluctance born from the dire warnings of her overly emotional mother. Her father has other ideas, however, and decrees that unless she weds by the spring, he will choose a husband for her.

Prim and proper Evangeline accepts her father's issue with little more than mild alarm. Knowing herself plain of face and sharp of tongue, she believes herself capable of warding off any perspective suitor. Her plan goes awry when the scandalous seducer, Mr. Thomas Masterson, visits her family's home, for Thomas has learned that he must procure a wife to receive his full inheritance.

When he discovers Evangeline's predicament matches his own, Thomas determines to orchestrate a practical arrangement. A war of wit and word results, and Thomas finds himself ever more beguiled by the soft heart he discovers under Miss Grey's stern, inhibited exterior. Patiently, he endeavors to gain her respect and awaken her passions. As tenuous trust blooms between the rake and the reluctant, unfortunate events – and Thomas' past reputation – threaten to destroy the peace and happiness he has found within the bonds of his Practical Arrangement.

Evangeline's father and Thomas's uncle hatch a plan of match making for them. Evangeline is 22 years old and almost considered an old maid, while Thomas has discovered an unsavory stipulation in his father's will that he marry to continue to receive his inheritance. Both characters are on the opposite sides of the spectrum, or so it appears to the general public. Thomas is snubbed by Evangeline at a party, which is not something he's used to. Ususally women are throwing themselves at his feet for his money or his proess in bed. He finds himself intrigued by her. Evangeline has had the fact that she is plain and too outspoken drilled into her head by her mother, which leaves her perplexed when Thomas is suddenly attentive to her.

Father and Uncle devise a plan to put Evangeline in Thomas's sites. He is warned away from her beautiful, widowed sister, Melody. He is told she is prone to fits of drama and basically told that there is no way he would ever catch Evangeline's eye. She has no wish to marry, her mother has also pounded in the idea that marriage is a chore that women must undertake and give themselves to their husbands, no matter how distasteful the act is. This leaves Evangeline wanting as little to do with marriage as possible and thinks she is safe. Little does she know, that she is slowly stealing Thomas's heart and he has other plans. What starts out as a practical arrangement for Thomas soon becomes a matter of the heart and he finds himself wanting to posses her mind, body, heart and soul.

They are married, due to him carrying Evangeline in the house after she sprains her ankle. For propriety's sake and her good name she agrees. However, she is slowly falling under Thomas's spell as much as he is hers. Which leaves the questions of can Thomas calm away Evangeline's fears and make her realize her worth? And can Evangeline accept her husbands love and reciprocate?

Thomas is so sweet, patient, and kind with Evangeline. He finds himself leaving behind his "playboy" lifestyle in pursuit of a much purer form of fulfillment. You find yourself just falling under his spell and want to be in Evangeline's place. Evangeline is a very sweet character. Ever worried about family and friends's wellbeing. At times you feel for her, the lies her mother believes and forces Evangeline to believe. A pleasent story line with plenty of playful banter and the sweetness of their blossoming love. I do love good word play, for me it is another form of foreplay, which just adds to the moment. If you are in the mood for a good romance without heartache around every corner coming between them, then this is the one for you. I found myself reading this in one day and would recommend it to all historical romance fans.

I have a soft spot for plain-faced heroines, I admit. Whether she be the socially awkward spinster who suddenly finds herself the belle of the ball or be she the proverbial "ugly duckling" who transforms into a lovely swan - I adore them all. There's nothing quite like reading about a homely heroine who finds her own "happily ever after".

A Practical Arrangement by author Nadja Notariani tells the story of Evangeline Grey, a plain faced woman who makes up for what she lacks in beauty with sensibility and propriety. Having experienced pain, both physical and emotional, at the hands of her emotionally unbalanced mother - Evangeline has sworn off marriage.

Thomas Masterson, a second son and known rake, learns that in order to gain his inheritance he must marry - and soon. Reluctant though he may be to give up his carefree lifestyle, Thomas is even more reluctant to give up his inheritance and so he sets his mind on coming up with an arrangement of sorts that will be beneficial to both he and Miss Grey.

Nadja Notariani adds such depth to the characters found within the pages of this book. I found myself endeared to the character of Evangeline who suffered bouts of anxiety whenever someone would touch her. She couldn't even tolerate the embrace of her beloved sister, Melody, without tensing within her arms. I loved this and how it made her seem more real to me! This was an affliction that was borne out of a legitimate fear and to watch as Thomas discovered this fear and started Evangeline on her path to healing was beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Thomas wasn't without his own demons to face. As the second son, Thomas often felt like he lived in the shadows of his older brother who could do no wrong in their father's eyes. After a bit of sibling rivalry turns deadly, Thomas finds himself engulfed in grief and loses himself in a hedonistic lifestyle. Only within the arms of his sweet Evie does he begin his own healing process.

There are a cast of secondary characters that truly add dimension to this tale. There's Melody, Evangeline's recently widowed sister who finds herself in an affair of sorts with Masterson's friend, Mr. Lane. Albert Grey and Winston Platte, matchmakers extraordinaires. Of course no good story is complete without a vindictive mistress and Augusta Preston plays her role quite well. There are many more characters I wish I had time to mention as they were all written so well but none quite stand out to me as much as Opal Grey, Evangeline's mother. I despised this woman from the first mention of her name throughout. Uuuggh! The way she constantly overlooked Evangeline and put her down in favor of Melody and then to actually be the cause of most of Evangeline's distress - there was no redeeming quality to be found about her whatsoever! I really hoped she would get a proper setting down by either Thomas or her own husband or someone but it was never forthcoming and for that I was greatly disappointed. Yes, I understood quite well that she suffered from bouts of depression but I literally wanted to strangle her myself!

Nadja Notariani's style of writing is quite reminiscent of that of Jane Austen and I would not hesitate to read another title of hers. All in all, A Practical Arrangement is indeed every bit as good as I thought it would be and I would highly recommend it.

A Practical Arrangement is a great read that I devoured in five hours. I have to say that the thought of someone choosing who I marry is not one I like. I could never marry someone my parents chose for me. Can you imagine who they would chose? Lord I would be so scared because my parents are polar opposites. I really felt for Evangeline because her father was determined to marry her off and she had no say in the matter. Evangeline is a smart women with a great head on her shoulders with one downfall she must marry someone in order to get her inheritance. I am sure your wondering why that is an issue well back in those times you did everything you were told no questions asked and for Evangeline she was born in the wrong time within the wrong era because she had a mind of her own.

That is until she meets Thomas Masterson who is in the same predicament as her. He needs a wife in order to receive his inheritance but the only difference is that Thomas has a very bad reputation with the ladies. So when Thomas actually falls in love with Evangeline he knows he is going to have to prove it and it is not going to be easy. With rumors flying around and people butting in in the relationship he is trying to have with Evangeline Thomas knows he has to work twice as hard to prove to her that this is no joke and he really does care for her.

Will Thomas ever be able to get over his past? Will Evangeline give him a chance? What happens to Thomas when he is confronted by his past? Come along for the greatest ride and find out what happens between Thomas and Evangeline.

Miss Evangeline Grey hovers on the horrible affliction of being on the shelf where society is concerned, however her view on the matter is vastly different than her family. Mr. Thomas Masterson is in need with a wife, when he hears of Evangeline’s ultimatum he comes up with a solution that could solve both their problems.

Delightful read, I thought the author really embraced the temperament of both characters. Thomas initially ambivalent about Evangeline who comes across plain and a bit timid finds out she is quietly beautiful in her own way and there are layers to her personality. Evangeline’s own preconceived and often unwarranted details on marriage become something quite different as she embraces her own journey into marriage with Thomas lovingly guiding the way. Beautifully written and something I rarely mention, I absolutely adore the cover it perfectly captivates the nature of the book.

A delightfully sweet historical romance, A Practical Arrangement, by Nadja Notariani, gives us the tale of an intelligent but quiet young woman who suddenly finds herself engaged to be married to a man known for his rakish ways. With likable and well developed characters, sharp dialogue and plenty of drama, Ms. Notariani grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go. Set during the time when women did not have many rights, and certainly not the right to choose their own futures, the author provides us with a heroine ahead of her time and a hero who's intrigued and challenged by her intelligence and strength of character.

Evangeline Grey is young, twenty two year old woman, who is loved by her family but is considered in danger of becoming a spinster. While Evangeline has no intentions of getting married, her knowledge of men and marital relationships is limited, she's shocked to be given an ultimatum by her father - choose a husband before the next spring, or he will choose one for her. An intelligent woman, Evangeline plans to be disagreeable to any man who comes near her in order to retain her freedom. She just wasn't planning on a somewhat notorious rake suddenly deciding she'd make an excellent bride.

Thomas Masterson is young, rich and has avoided being responsible all of his life. Confronted by his uncle, who just happens to be Evangeline's father's best friend, Thomas suddenly discovers he will not inherit the rest of his father's estate unless he's married. A man known for his dalliances, suddenly Thomas finds himself in need of a wife; a woman he needs to respect who will be by his side for the rest of his life. Encountering Miss Evangline Grey's disapproval, Thomas suddenly realizes she's intelligent, quietly attractive and possess a sharp wit. While he hadn't planned on getting married, he's attracted to Evangeline and decides she'll do.

The scenes between Evangeline and Thomas are well written and showcase their verbal and mental chemistry. While Evangeline has many reservations, Thomas is patient and willing to discover what's really behind her fears. I really liked how Ms. Notariani developed the relationship between Evangeline and Thomas, while Evangeline is more somber and subdued in her behavior, she and Thomas are a good fit for each other - her strengths are some of Thomas's weaknesses and his strengths are just what Evangeline needs.

The secondary characters in this story are mostly relatives of both characters ranging from Evangeline's sister Melody, considered the family beauty, to Opal Grey, Evangeline's mother who's somewhat of a prima donna in need of a good take down. While there are no villains per se, there are plenty of gossips and at least one woman who had hoped to snatch Thomas for herself.

Will Evangline and Thomas realize their practical arrangement has become much more than they both ever hoped? Or will Thomas's past get in the way of their future happiness? You'll have to read A Practical Arrangement to find out. I enjoyed it and I think you will too.

Evangeline Grey has no desire to marry. She's been burned before and her beautiful sister chosen before her. Plain looking but thoroughly out spoken and well guarded nothing can shake her, well except perhaps her father's ultimatum she needs to marry soon or he'll choose a man for her.

Thomas Masterson is a rake, with no desire to becoming a serious state owner even though her brother and father have a died and now his uncle has stated that if he doesn't marry and produce and heir soon he's going to loose the land.

Two ultimatums bring together too completely different people who seem to have nothing in common in the beginning, when below the surface prim and proper Evangeline has passion perhaps too much of it and Thomas begins to fall in love with the mysterious and cool Ms. Grey. Before Evangeline knows what has happened she's been compromised by Mr. Masterson and will have to marry soon. Not that it matters too much with her father's ultimatum but something about Thomas' heated looks and flirting has her ill at ease like she's never experienced before.

I absolutely, positively loved this book from the beginning to the end! Nadja Notariani writes as amazing as Lisa Kleypas does and I'm completely hooked on historical romances again. A Practical Arrangement was perfectly proper in all the details, the language and the romance. The story was well built with everything one hopes for to keep the attention on the entertaining chemistry between prim and reserved Ms. Grey and rakish flirt Mr. Masterson. Absolutely entertaining!

Evangeline was no doubt my favorite historical romance heroine of 2012! She was so withdrawn but had a world of feelings and restrictions going on on the inside. She hated physical intimacy like embraces because of her mother's treatment of her as a child, she found them suffocating except when performed by Thomas which left her mystified. This was just one of her endearing quirks that made her utterly charming and sweet. Not to mention of her thread of any sort of sexual contact, which was hard on our poor rake and his shot down attempts of flirting with our Ms. Grey.

Thomas I loved from the beginning, he tried his hardest to woo Evangeline but all he got back was smart retorts and brush offs, which baffled him enough that when he didn't receive them from ditsy society girls he became hooked on her. And that was just so romantic, and if I wasn't hooked on this book by then I was now! Thomas was known for his expertise in the bedroom and as Ms. Grey couldn't care less of that he had to win her by showing his true self and that's when he begun to make progress even through greatly resisted some. I absolutely loved Thomas! After all who doesn't love a cured rake. ;)

The romance was perfect, miss match couple, marrying ultimatums, a jealous ex-lover of Thomas' and Evangeline's quirks and fear of intimacy and Thomas' love of it made this story so intriguing! I simply hated putting this book down to go explore Prague and that's saying something. ;) So if you want romance, real Romance then this is for you! And definitely for me!

Must read more by Ms. Notariani!

Evangeline Grey is a woman out-of-step with society. At a time when women are supposed to be quiet, shy and retiring, she is intelligent, educated and doesn't fear showing her intelligence. Unfortunately she lives during a time when a woman of her stature is expected to get married and that is a problem. Evangeline has a problem with intimacy of any kind and has no desire to get married. She has seen the emotional perils of marriage through her parents' marriage. Her sister, Melody - a young widow, insists that marriage and the intimacy found there is nothing to be feared and is highly desirable, but Evangeline finds this hard to believe. Her hopes for living a single life are dashed when her father presents her with an ultimatum, choose a husband by spring or else.

Thomas Masterson is considered a rake by societal standards. He is well known for sowing his oats and he has no shame regarding his activities. He is accepted into the Grey household because he is a man of wealth, status and his aunt and uncle are great friends to the Greys. When he is presented with his own ultimatum, marry or else, he is in a quandary. He doesn't wish to marry any of the tittering young women he's met at balls, etc., and yearns for simple companionship. After speaking with Evangeline Grey during a recent visit to her parents' home, he finds himself attracted to her acerbic wit and intelligence. The more he becomes attracted to her the more he realizes the only way he can get her to marry him is through trickery and the end result is an engagement and marriage.

A Practical Arrangement hints at the practical necessity of marriage that is forced on both Evangeline and Thomas. Their relationship begins on extremely shaky footing and progresses to one of mutual respect and admiration. Thomas may have been considered a rake, but he isn't as bad as some make him out to be. He takes great pains and care with Evangeline and her feelings. I found it difficult to understand Evangeline's feelings and fears about intimacy (including her desire not to be touched even by her family) until the very end. This lack of clarity on this issue made the story seem a bit far-fetched while reading it but eventually made a bit more sense after additional information was provided. A Practical Arrangement is a quick historical romance read that is sure to delight.

Oh my, where do I begin? So, by the disclaimer above, you know that this is a bit of a steamy romance novel, very much not my usual genre of read. I have never disguised the fact that I am not a fan of the romance novel in its basest form, in part very much because of that type of content. Well, let me tell you ladies and gentleman, that if many of them progress as this novel had, I may well have to be a convert. I blush as I write these words because, well, I never thought I would utter them, and that is the truth.

The story will suck you in. I struggled a little with the story at the beginning, though, but was quickly sucked in. Did married couples really refer to each other in conversation together as Mr. and Mrs.? That seemed a little awkward to me, but perhaps that truly was the way things were. I profess no claim at explicit knowledge of the interrelational workings of the time period.

While reading this particular novel, I felt myself in a rather odd predicament. Never had a novel stirred such raw emotion within me that I was...perplexed as to how to write the review without using spoilers. I am still not sure if I will do it justice because of this very fact, but I am trying, folks, really I am.

Really, you would have to read it. I am new to romance and to historical fiction, but I am finding that I really do seem to love them. I don't expect to go all fangirl over the genre, though someday I will most likely eat those words.

Ms. Notariani is a gifted storyteller, based solely on how sucked into a genre of book I NEVER read I am. This to me seems a huge accomplishment on the part of an author, because I feel as though it is her writing alone that has made this change within me.

You really are going to have to read for yourselves. I am stopping myself out of fear that I give something away!

In compliance with FTC guidelines, I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book is, first and foremost a Regency Romance: with the era-appropriate repression of women and their intelligence, and the deference to males as ruler of all things. But that is where the resemblance ends, and this is a well-crafted, clever story that approaches the societally appropriate conventions with humor, grace and uniquely drawn characters.

Evie is an intelligent yet naïve heroine, with a fear of intimacy and a mistrust and dislike of the traditional role that she is expected to occupy. Thomas was a rake, and is essentially tricked into wanting to know Evie better as he is told she would never be interested in the likes of him. Evie makes Thomas want to be a better man and husband, and he allows her to explore her interests and express desires to him, without pushing her to tell all. What develops is a sweet romance that is not without bumps in the road, but to say more would spoil the fun.

Secondary characters are also well crafted, which creates a true fullness to the story that utilizes them to such effect. Additionally there is a character with apparent mental health issues that is not put away in the cupboard, but is a character that is interacting – a true twist from similar books of this era (Austen, Bronte) and a welcome diversion. Conversations are witty and often cleverly laced with humor or snark, depending on the tone of the discussion. The author has created a wonderful read, and I hope to see many more from her.

I received an eBook copy from author for purpose of honest review for FMB Tours. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Regency romance is one of my favorite genres. Why? Because they are usually on the tame side and well, I just love that time period.

Nadja has written the kind of Regency I devoured when I was in junior high, and guess what? At 38, I still find this kind of Regency tasty!

Evie's the perfect heroine for this kind of story, she's smart but a little naive. She doesn't want a husband because of stories her mother has told her and she has a fear of personal contact for much the same reason. You totally have to feel sorry for her because her mother has her terrified of intimacy and human contact. Hugs frighten her!

Thomas is the perfect rake that becomes reformed when he gets to know Evie. Sure there's a mistress out to spoil their happiness, but you know that everything will work out for the best.

What I found really great about Thomas was how he really fell for Evie, just as his friend Jonathan fell for her sister Melody. Speaking of Melody, I loved that though their mother compared the two sisters, Evie and Melody had no animosity towards one another. Lord knows if my mother acted the way Opal did, I would truly hate my sister.

This was a great book, and though the epilogue left me sad in away, it gave me hope that there will be another story down the line from that family member that was mentioned.

Review of A Practical Arrangement
Reviewed by Mallory Heart Reviews

“A Practical Arrangement” enthralled me immediately, proving to be so much more than I had expected. Excellently written, but more-excellently characterized, tautly plotted, with both protagonists and secondary characters who are readily understandable and empathetic, this novel engrossed me and I quickly read through to the end. Even though it was fairly easy to intuit some of the outcomes, the journey to those results was most enjoyable.
What a heroine! Evangeline has grown up in a household with a beauteous younger sister, a loving but sometimes distant father, and a mother who nowadays would probably be classified, at minimum, as manic-depressive, quite possibly as borderline-in other words, a difficult person by whom to be mothered. Evangeline has thus been schooled that marital relations are revolting but necessary, and for a woman who has learned to equate touch with confinement, the prospect of marriage is beyond bleak-especially if the prospective suitor is a wild, wanderin, second son, with a reputation scandalous even for a known rake.
Reading “A Practical Arrangement” left me with a happy attitude, and the determination to read more novels from author Nadja Notariani.

I admit that I love the cover on this book. It is perfect for the story within. This book captured me with the first chapter. I was fascinated with this book. When reading I got a sense that the author had stepped from the time when Jane Austen was writing. Yes, I compared this modern author to someone over a century ago.

I love the Evangeline’s character. She was so strong, but she was also, needed someone like Thomas in her life. Someone that would treat her like the wonderful person is truly is.

If you are looking for a sweet wonderful read that feels like it come from the Jane Austen then check this one out. A short sweet read that would fulfill what you are looking for in a book.

Thanks for a great read Nadja.

The premise of arranged marriages is something that I find highly interesting, one one my favorite plots to be honest, it’s rich to see how these relationships could work out. However I wasn’t particularly excited about how the author decided to tell this story.

A Practical Arrangement is a curious book with characters I’d enjoy very much to see again and read the stories they have to tell.

"A Practical Arrangement" is a well written romance with strong characters and dialogue. I was pleasantly surprised with the supporting character having a mental illness, that is something I normally never come across in an era romance novel. A must read for all who love the regency era romance genre.

The language is a bit flowery (also I don't think "baby" was used as an endearment during this time period), but there was an insecure, plain spinster who gets grief from Mean Girls, so of course I liked it. I was thinking this might end up on the traumatized heroine shelf, but But I did enjoy watching Evangeline come out of her shell.

Review as appears on my blog Amy's Book World:

This book follows Evangeline and Thomas through their brief courtship than marriage. Evangeline is advance for her time. She is out spoken and against marriage. This is unheard of in a time when the man spoke for the woman. And if you were not married by a certain age, people thought that there was something wrong with you. I like Evangeline, she had a sharp tongue and quick wit. Unfortunately her father has stated that she has to be married by spring. When Thomas and Evangeline meet sparks don't fly instantly but they can tell there is some connection. Neither choose to act on it until Thomas finds out that he has to marry in order to get his inheritance. He finds out about Evangeline's marriage situation and realizes that they could be each others solutions. Thomas doesn't tell Evangeline about his predicament with his inheritance. You know that Thomas is making a mistake, not in marrying Evangeline but in not telling her the full truth. She is skeptical about people already and he is adding fuel to that fire by not being truthful.

Evangeline has a warped perspective on sex and relationships with men in general. This is all thanks to her mother. Her mother, Opal, tells Evangeline all these horrid tales about sex in order to take out her anger against her father on Evangeline. Opal is a sick woman. Years of depression has taken it's toll on her. Being that she is the oldest, Evangeline has to take the brunt of actions that the illness causes. This affects her relationships with people other than her sister.

Thomas has a reputation with the ladies. He gets around. He is content to staying a ladies man but something about Evangeline makes him want to change. It could be the challenge of trying to win her over. Either way they are both good for each other. They show each other sides of themselves that they didn't know existed.

The author did a good job with this book. I haven't read a lot of historicals before but this is one I did like. I like the fact that the author doesn't put the female characters in a role that was typical of that time, speak when only spoken to. She allows them to have a mind of their own. Her writing flows great through out the story and is easy to follow. The dialogue of that time is not hard to understand. It is a great book for someone just starting to read historical romances to read.

Overall I enjoyed the book. I loved how the author tied the story up at the end and left it open for a possible future book. I definitely will be adding more of this author's books to my book list. It is a recommend read.

Evangeline has always been in her sister Melody’s shadow; the plainer of the two sisters, she fully expects to stay a spinster. When her father decides it’s time for Evangeline to marry and Melody to re-marry; she doesn’t put much stock in it. Who would marry her when most only see Melody?

Thomas Masterson is set to inherit Cherry Hill; he has been learning and researching farming methods in the area. When he and Mr. Lane visit the Grey’s; he is immediately intrigued by the intelligent, witty Miss Evangeline Grey.

This was an interesting read, it did take me a bit to get into the story; but was pleasantly surprised how it drew me in as I got past the first couple of chapters. Thomas knew exactly what he was doing, when he corners Evangeline; they would have to marry and with that solve both their problems.

Evangeline is terrified of marriage and everything it brings. Can she get past her fears and find love with Thomas? Can she see herself as more then just a ‘plain’ looking woman? Can he see past her intelligence and wit, to find the beautiful woman she is?

Would I recommend this book? Yes, for someone who is looking for a quick read and loves historicals. I love stories of reformed rakes who fall in love with their wives, that are pushed into marriage to save someone from scandal. Anyone who loves those types of stories, will enjoy this. Would I read more by this author? Yes.

I have to admit that I've read close to 200 books this year. So many seem to repeat themselves, but Nadja Notariani gave me a pleasant read that stood out against so many others in her book, A Practical Arrangement.

Evangeline does not believe in romance and would prefer to continue her life with no man. Thomas enjoys women too much. Both have family members that want to see them as a couple because they would just be perfect. It would be such a practical arrangement until Evangeline presents a challenge to Thomas. Now, it's a matter of the heart.

This was one of the most delightful romantic reads I encountered this year. There was humor, romance, and characters that you could fall in love with. Ms. Notariani does an excellent job of character development and scene descriptions. It was beautifully done. I did not find anything that made me pause in my reading. It flowed smoothly and kept me completely engaged. This is not a suspense novel or something that will keep you riveted throughout the night, but it is a read that you want to finish simply because it is so well written and has you wanting more.

Ms. Notariani has several intimate scenes in the book but none of them are overly graphic. They give the reader just a hint of what really happens before stepping back and giving the couple privacy. Love it!

One of the most charming renditions of “The Taming of the Shrew” since the Bard (I’m a sucker for Olde English). Lovely story about a marriage of convenience that turns into true love.

I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds.

The book started out promising but ended flat and dull. Everything just miraculously resolved by themselves.
Many loose threads left at the end of the book.
