"The Cinnamon Club Cookbook features recipes from the most groundbreaking Indian restaurant in the world, famously situated in the ultra-glamorous surroundings of London's Old Westminster Library. Famous for its unique, award-winning blend of Western and European influences it has become one of London's top half-dozen restaurants, with a New York restaurant opening in Manhattan in 2004. Now readers and cooks anywhere in the world can recreate for themselves fabulous dishes from the kitchens of this world-renowned restaurant!
Iqbal Wahhab should be credited as co author. I wanted to like this, not being able to afford the restaurant ! An attempt to drag Indian cuisine into fine dining where to the rich it had been. But what a disappointment. All the aspects of the awful Nouvelle Cuisine with an Asian theme. It's simply pretentious plate decoration. It might look tasty, and almost certainly is at their prices, but most dishes look like a couple of mouthfuls. No sooner do you appreciate the flavour and it's gone. OK, it's probably just me but I could never enjoy a degustation meal, but if I like something, I want more of the same. Not something else. Their King Prawns in Saffron Almond Sauce shows a single prawn, their Wild Salmon with Dill and Mustard shows a 6 oz fillet, Wild Bass, 7oz, Monkfish, 7oz etc. Oh, these aren't starters, they are listed as Main Courses. Still, I only paid 30p for it withdrawn from the library. As it is listed at £20 I might just about manage a starter at the Cinnamon with the saving of £19-70 I made. Might just afford a 3 1/2 oz Tandoori-Style Salmon with Rice Pancake from the starters. Must make sure I don't sneeze when they serve it, might blow it off the plate.
I reckon a 3 course meal with portions this size should take all of 15 minutes to eat
I see from their website they are closed until mid September for a refurb. Their new menu promises meat carved at the table and one photo shows a small lamb? leg which looks as though it's been cooked in a Tandoori oven. Although many of the reviews are positive, mainly from foreign visitors, it's clear that those that are less enthusiastic are not impressed by high prices for small servings.
Update 25/12/2015
It appears that my criticism of Cinnamon Club is supported. Grace Dent, restaurant critic, has it listed as one of her 10 worst restaurants of 2015
