I recently done a binge weekend of The Hunger Games. So the finding this cookbook right on the heels of that rewatching was a real perk. I loved the cookbook, it was so much fun browsing and imagining the different situations that were described with each recipe section. There are a few in the book that I would love to replicate however a few also that just made me smile or cringe. Probably won't find at any time on my table Roasted Raccoon, Baked Groundhog, Rat on a Stick, Possum Entrails, Friend Snake Steak, Baked Pigeon, Badger Stew, Minnow Hash, or Snail Scampi. Absolutely loved this book!

There are some interesting recipes here, but not a single photo!
I need my cook books to have pictures of the final product. I also didn't love that it's organized by book and then by district instead of similar recipes or by district - I found the order a bit confusing.
That being said there are definitely creative recipes here. From squirrel to mashed peas the author definitely made an effort to understand the Hunger Games world and what the characters would have eaten and how those foods may be made. I'm certainly not ambitious enough to try rat anytime soon, but the breakfast rolls sound good.

Love this book
I love the fact it has a little intro and explanation before the recipes and they tried to keep things as authentic as possible. The menu at the end is a great took to planning hunger games themed parties of any kind. Unfortunately this is not really suitable to vegans at all and there are very few vegetarian recipes. I can't wait to try them all (actually, most of them).

a fun book for hunger game fans. It has adapted recipes and some that have ingredients that you cant find at the local grocery story - like katniss roots, squirel or beaver.

i love this book, its a great cookbook thats full of recipes from the hunger games book trilogy . this book is ideal for having hunger games themed dinner parties. this book is full of recipes from the book peeta's burnt raisin nut bread, mr mellark's farewell cookies, greasy sae's call it beef soup very peasant style food from the poorest district in panem most die from starvation, meat is a very rare treat and its mostly in the form of game meat that katniss usually hunts herself from rabbits, squirrels, dog entrails, any meat that can be obtained and turned into a meal or traded for some bread from the local bakery to the more luschious capitol meals tribute lamb chops, creamy mashed potatoes, irrisistable hot chocolate, orange chicken in cream sauce, gamemakers suckling pig, beloved lamb stew with dried plums, to the limited sources in the arena all for rue groosling legs, arena beef strips, one fine spit roasted rabbit, just to name a few these recipes are ideal to recreate a hunger games theme dinner party whether your portraying the citizens of district 12 in the seam with the more game wild meat dishes if they are lucky enough to find the desperate hunger consuming them driving them from the edge of starvation with meats like dog entrails, squirrels, rabbit, wild birds anything containing meat that they can be cooked in a dish or the lush capitol dishes full of decadence

The stories may have ended, but for many of us, the books and characters are still very much alive, leaving fans craving more. The struggles of Katniss and the people ruled by the Capitol have spilled into the Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games. Well, what better way to satisfy that craving than by preparing some dishes from the book?
To feel like we’re in the world of Katniss, the cook book follows the chronological order of the Hunger Games series, keeping the dishes as realistic as possible. The people of District 12 have recipes that use ingredients reminiscent of pioneer days – grains, goat milk and cheese, rustic breads, fresh herbs and nuts – while those from the Capitol enjoy rich desserts and flavorful meats.
While some recipes seem less likely to create, like the suckling pig, which is called for in the Gamemaker’s Suckling Pig recipe, they are still enjoyable to read about. And, other recipes, like the Thick and Creamy Carrot Soup, are so simple and succulent you’d describe the work as a “piece of cake.”
A fun read and fun food make this book good enough to eat the pages.

This cookbook is nothing less than entertaining, especially for those diehard Hunger game fans. (So… about everyone) It’s filled with recipes based on all 3 novels. The recipes are in order of the books and take you from the beginning in district 12, up until the end in the capital. Each chapter gives you a quick reference to the storyline, a quote from Katniss or some quick description of what was happening, and explains and reminds you of the food that was featured in each. The food is definitely more adventurous, but anyone could try it. From roasted rabbit, homesick cheese buns, rich stews, to Mr.Mellark’s farewell cookies, the recipes really do represent the places and characters and are nothing short of fun. It’s pretty neat because you get to experience the book again but this time explore the food. The end leaves you with menus that can be catered to any type of dinner party. I think it would be a great gift for any fan and a wonderful way to spice up your kitchen.

I bought this book to give to my niece, who devoured the Hunger Games books I gave her previously. But before wrapping it up, I checked out some of the recipes. Well surprise, surprise…they were awesome! Each one is beautifully written and comes with an in-depth intro explaining how it relates to the Games. I especially loved creating the train-ride meal while imagining it was the first proper meal I’d ever eaten! Besides the final section, “Authenticity for Adventurous Eaters,” no section in the book was more or less appetizing than the others. Although I would never venture to cook a squirrel like in the “charred tree rat” recipe, I thought it was a fun addition. And hey, it’s always good to build one’s apocalypse survival skills! But fish cakes with wasabi-lime mayo? Juicy chocolate citrus cake? Yes please!

Several friends of mine share an obsession with Katniss, so it was really fun hosting get-togethers wherein we'd all bring dishes taken directly from this book. Prim's Goat Cheese Gifts turned out to be the most popular appetizer, and literally took me 10 minutes to prep. As food is such a huge player in the world of Panem—from the District dweller's modest dishes to the Capitol's elaborate feasts, The Unofficial Recipes of The Hunger Games crafted a totally pleasurable (as well as practical) means to delving even further into the character's intricate lives. Offering over 180 recipes, ranging from simple snacks and refreshers to sophisticated dinner-party-perfect spreads, each correlates directly to the action-packed happenings of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

From carrot soup to hearty beef stew, this well-organized cookbook has something for everyone. I love that most of the recipes contain ingredients that can be found at your local grocery store. There are also some more adventurous dishes like ‘Gale’s Venison Pot Roast’ that might take a special trip to the butcher, but otherwise look very easy to make. There’s even an array of party menus for kids, teens and adults. With 187 recipes for appetizers, entrees, drinks, and desserts you will always be able to find something new and daring to prepare. Just pick one (or more) and start cooking!

I have to say it- this is a really cool gift idea for any fan of the trilogy. Each selection from the novel is represented with unique recipes. The book begins with easy recipes and as Katniss advances through her world, the reader and cook go along with her, and the recipes become more decadent and slightly harder to make. I wouldn’t say anything required a trained chef but some of the recipes toward the end definitely require more attention and preparation than the bread and fish stew recipes at the beginning. Fans, and non-fans who just like good food, will have a blast reading the background of each recipe and reliving their favorite scenes and characters from the book. With Christmas around the corner, this is a must have gift!

As far as cookbooks for popular book and movie series go, this is one of the best. The Harry Potter cookbooks are nothing to write home about, as many of the recipes are difficult or simply do not turn out well. this cookbook, however, has got what it takes. many of the recipes are explained, as far as what part of the series inspired it. The author(s) also take the time to say "Hey, this one is hard." or "If you have middle school sized fans in the kitchen, this one is something they can help with and not drive you completely insane."
And the authenticity! There are recipes that include RAT! and Dandelions! And traditional Appalachian recipes, seeing as that is where District 12 is most likely located.

The Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games was a fascinating cookbook. The recipes are well written and very easy to follow, which is wonderful. The book is also well categorized by the three books so that way you don’t get confused by where each recipe is located for each book. The descriptions above each recipe of where in the Hunger Games this food was mentioned or the symbolic meaning behind each recipe was a great addition. And as for the people who are devoted completely to the series, they will get more insight into their favorite characters. I have no doubt in my mind that any devoted fan of the Hunger Games trilogy would enjoy this cookbook and its recipes!

I have to admit that I picked this book off the shelf as a "gag" gift for a friend of mine who is a big fan of Ms. Collins' trilogy. However, it not only served its purpose by brightening his day, but he invited me over the other night for a sample of what the book offers. It was awesome and apparently the introductions to the chapters are entertaining as well. I just purchased the cookbook online for myself and I can't wait to try out the recipes. I just thought I would share this story for anyone who may be curious about the cookbook for themselves. Inside are not only great recipes but food for conversation as well. Enjoy!

This is a fun/entertaining cookbook that offers charming names for recipes, interesting inserts and a very imaginative compilation of easy-to-follow recipes with descriptions of how they appear in the stories they came from. In fact, after reading this book, I’m sorry I missed Hunger Games movie when it came out. I can’t wait to try “Better than Nothing Bread with Moldy Cheese and Mustard Sauce,” which tantalizes me because it brings together mayo, lemon juice, mustard and honey into a dip for the warm bread cubes that have bleu cheese crumbles melted on them!

After reading this cookbook, all I want to do is sit with a cup of Katniss’ mint tea while re-reading my favorite parts as “Wish There Was Meat” Bean and Onion Stew simmers on the stove. The recipes included in the book range from decadent Capitol food to more experimental, wild-game recipes, but they’re all either directly mentioned in the book or inspired by characters or events. Several of the recipes even have cute or funny names that represent the time in the book they appeared (like Wind in Your Hare Pie).

But you will get to be in the book for one last time as you eat what they ate and try to imagine yourself in a world where food was like wealth. The recipes range anywhere from out there as Dandelion Salad to a bit more traditional; Finger-Licking Chocolate Cake.

As a fan of The Hunger Games Trilogy, I found this book to be a wonderful companion to the novels. This book cleverly reproduces the food items from the Hunger Games books with useful, fun, and adventurous recipes. The recipes follow the events in the books and you can visualize the story as you browse the recipes. For those who avoid the kitchen, this book will conjure images from the Hunger Games and enhance the world created by Suzanne Collins. This is a great book for any fan – I highly recommend this book!

The Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games is a fun cookbook made for fans of the Hunger Games Trilogy. It teaches you how to recreate all of the famous dishes from the books, even the Peeta’s burnt bread! I enjoy the way the book weaves in quotes and explains where each dish comes from in the story. Aside from the cookbook’s obvious theme, it’s also a just a great cookbook generally speaking—there are great recipes for soups, baked goods and meats.

Engaging + Appetizing + Well-Crafted ..."The Unofficial Recipes of The Hunger Games" is both a surprising great read and beautiful cookbook...a literal cornucopia of district-by-district fare, inspired menu plans and Pranem party plans... best snag two for the holidays - one each to keep and give!
