Three years ago, Perry Atherton’s young life almost ended in a dark alley when he tried to play a superhero. Now, Perry’s stagnant life has been resurrected into happy contentment. No one’s tried to kill him in months, and beyond Wille Slater’s creepy vibes, Perry’s custodial position at Maverick Insurance is going well. Even better, his relationship with Detective Nathaniel Harmon has the potential to turn into something loving and lasting.

Lying in the back of a pick-up truck, the Milky Way stretched above him and snuggled up next to Nate, Perry couldn’t be happier. A phone call from Nate’s work partner ends the best date Perry’s ever been on and throws his boyfriend back into another murder investigation.
As a homicide detective, Nate’s used to the inconvenient calls, late hours, and missed promises with Perry. What he’s not used to is sort of, kind of knowing the homicide victim and the need to interrogate Perry’s best friend—Gayle Ridley.

Death is never easy. Murder is worse. Dealing with your boyfriend’s hurt feelings and protective instincts is brutal. Nate needs to solve this murder pronto so he can get out of the doghouse and crawl back under the covers with the man he loves.

When a suspect in Nate’s latest murder investigation threatens Perry, Nate will push himself to the limits. Perry has suffered enough, and Nate will be damned if he brings his dangerous work to Perry’s door. The world needs to learn that Perry Atherton is off-limits, and Nate will make sure the message is delivered loud and clear.

Goes Unpunished is the second book in the Maverick Insurance Mysteries series. The first book, No Good Deed, should be read prior. Goes Unpunished is a m/m romantic mystery and contains good friends, sketchy coworkers, lazy and hungry cats, thoughtful dating, and an exhausted detective and his understanding boyfriend.

Goes Unpunished contains descriptions of homicide and a character using a homophobic slur once.

I've been a veterinarian for almost twenty years and have recently added published author to my resume. I've been writing for over fifteen years, most of those stories languishing on my computer. A couple of years ago my fear of never trying to publish my stories overcame my fear of failure. The result is my first book, "Sow What You Reap". It is the first in the Reaping Covetous series. The next book, "Dead Women Tell Tales" should be out by the end of October 2021.

I love supernatural, urban fantasy, paranormal, and mystery genres. I write both M/F and M/M oriented stories.

Please don't hesitate to ask me a question or two.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy my stories. I know I love telling them.

Heads up, this one is more mystery than romance.

Which, btw, I don't hate...but idk if I necessarily like it either? The mystery that was the "big reveal" in the first book takes a massive backseat in this one, and sitting in the back along with it is Perry & Nate's romance. They did not have enough time together - there's a little bit more heat between the two, though (especially towards the end), and for that I am eternally grateful.

I will say, I'm also grateful for the fact that the MCs lack of one-on-one time is part of the plot and addressed in the story. It's not that the author just didn't write enough scenes; it's because Nate is the Superman of detectives and he's busy keeping the world a safe place for Perry to live in.

I love a slow burn but this book brought us to a pace that's damn near glacial. But again, everything that the author is doing makes sense for the characters so I'm not super mad. Regardless, I'm desperately hoping that the next book picks up the pace on the romance front.

4,5 stars for the second book in this series ... which should absolutely be read in order.

In this one, the focus was more on the mystery part, although the relationship does develop in the right direction.
Perry is a bit of a bystander here, which fits the mystery storyline.
I like the characters, and in my opinion, the development of the background and the characters is very promising for future books.

I really hope there will be more books in this series .... and I really want a book about Malcolm, which may be strange, but I think he is an interesting character
(If it would fit the characters better, I would propose an MMM pairing here ... but alas, that doesn't work with Nate at all)

A great second book and I am really looking forward to the next one

In the second book of the series, Perry's best friend Gayle hates her roommate's boyfriend and he is murdered. Perry's boyfriend, Nate, a homicide detective has to investigate. I love Perry and his brain injury, caring and gentleness. Nate is so sweet to him and loving though sexy times are limited. These are fun to read mysteries that keep me guessing every time. I can't wait to see Perry's workplace inserting themselves into each mystery with them being so ominous yet protective of Perry. I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

I really like these 2 together even though Nate is kept busy investigating the latest murders.
The backdrop of Maverick Insurance is also interesting. I wonder how long it will be before the authorities realize what is going on? and why is Perry so special to them?
Hoping there is a book 3 soon.

This series gets better and better! And the story arc continues, so be sure and read the series in order. This time around Perry is only involved with the murder by association to his bestie Gayle. I never guessed who did it till the end.

I am really enjoying this series. Perry and Nate are both lovable main characters. Their relationship together is so sweet and supportive. It's such a joy to watch them get closer and to see Perry healing. The secondary characters are also well thought out and add depth and colour to this series. It's so intriguing and unique. This mystery was also interesting and I liked going along the ride with Nat and Nate to find out who the killer was. As with the first book, there is an underlying mystery still open, but the book ends in a satisfying way. I look forward to seeing where MJ is taking us (and Perry and Nate) with this series. Highly recommend to readers who enjoy mystery and suspense along with a light spattering of romance.

When I saw this book offered by GRR, I made a point of reading the first one in the series so that I knew what was going on, but to be completely honest, I’m still not sure!

The majority of the novel concentrates on the homicide case Nate is working on. Keith just so happens to be dating the roommate of Perry’s best friend, Gayle, who is in the unfortunate position of having been completely upfront and honest about just how much she hates Keith. It’s this tenuous link that involves Perry in the investigation – Nate has to be careful to be impartial, even if it means sitting back whilst Perry’s best friend is accused of murder.

That all sounds good so far and we are involved in the investigation as we follow Nate and his partner as they follow the clues. But absolutely none of that has anything to do with Maverick Insurance and that’s where my confusion lies. There is something odd going on where Perry works as a custodian for Maverick Insurance – he has found himself amidst a group of killers and that is made plain in the book – but it has nothing to do with Nate’s investigation.

And that’s where my suspension of disbelief struggles. The big story is obviously Maverick Insurance – how it came to be, who they are, and why they are watching over Perry – but none of that is discussed or alluded to in the two books in the series so far. And, to be a little blunt, I think that story would be far more interesting than the ones we’ve read so far. We don’t get to find out just why Delia and Malcolm are so attached to Perry – apart from the fact that he shows basic human decency.

The relationship between Nate and Perry is moving along at a quiet pace, and despite both men stating how much they care for each other, this isn’t some madcap, passionate affair. Their relationship is handled on a superficial level which I found frustrating. Perhaps that’s where I’ve gone wrong with this series – I’ve been reading it as a romance/mystery type thing, with the relationship between Perry and Nate being at the forefront and Maverick Insurance as the backdrop. Instead, it is the police procedural aspect of things that are concentrated on, with details about relationship/mystery only being given to the reader very sparsely.

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did and I think my frustration is evident in my review – there are so many other things I would prefer to find out than how well Russ cooks or the minutiae of police investigating. I don’t know if I’m going to read any more of these books if/when they come out because of this frustration and that feels like a shame because I feel like those details would be fascinating.

I received an ARC from GRR.

I can’t decide (spoiler alert)

It’s an interesting idea but there are some issues. The first one might just be me…maybe.

Perry got beaten within an inch of his life. The DOCTORS had to remove a portion of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain. Ok that happens but the way this author obsesses over the jagged scar like it’s all bumpy is disturbing. I actually have a family member who was beaten within an inch of his life and the doctors had to literally put parts of his skull back together. It was a neurosurgeon and he did an excellent job. There are scars but they’re smooth. No catching fingernails (ouch) and other creepy stuff these two books keep saying over and over. So maybe it’s just me but every time I read something like that it bugged the crap outta me.

Also Nate is a creepy stalker. He never knew Perry. He responded to a crime scene and held the guys hand until the ambulance took him. Then he kept going to the hospital and was so obsessed his bosses forbid him from going anymore. Didn’t know the guy. Never spoke to him. Then three years later he’s on a case and Perry collapses hearing his voice and it’s insta love…for both of them. That’s not creepy.

The best friend is an idiot. She flies off the handle at the drop of a hat and she’s annoying as fu*k.

The guys don’t get to know each other they’re just suddenly talking about what a great person the other one is. It makes no sense.

The cop never gets in trouble for dating the guy he was specifically told to stay away from. His partner gets pissed once and that’s the end of it. The boss doesn’t even blink.

The underlying story of the weird insurance company is intriguing and it’s the only reason I kept reading. I want to know how Perry remembers.

There’s too much filler. These two books could have been one. Too much cleaning the office and being in the break room and too much thinking. I almost put the book down several times.

I am going to do this review a little differently so there may be spoilers for those who have not yet read book one. It is strongly recommended that you read this series in the order written. That being said, I am going to do this review in two sections, one that will cover the mystery that is the focus point of Goes Unpunished and the second part will cover the romance between Perry and Nate.

Goes Unpunished deals with the death of Keith, you remember him, the jerk from book one that drove Gayle, Perry's best friend crazy. He was also one of the reasons Gayle spent so much time at Perry's place. His death is a little on the gruesome side and effects so many lives, not just Perry and Gayle's. Because Gayle is so free with her words she, for a time, becomes the first suspect in the case which leads to some misunderstanding between Perry and Nate. The guilty party and the reason for killing Keith in some ways was both a surprise and obvious. The journey the reader goes on during Nat and Nate's investigation will keep the reader entertained and has made me a fan of this author.

The romance between Perry and Nate is a slow burning one, not because the men are unsure of their feelings but because the care they have for each other and Nate's understanding of the various issues that effect Perry. I love that this is not something that the author pushes through for the sake of heating up the pages. Perry's issues, the result of two horrible crimes committed against him, makes Perry who he is. To say the author has done a wonderful job making his issues believable seems a little weird but those of us that suffer some of the same problems that Perry does will appreciate the work the author has done.

This is the second book in the series and it is best to have read the first book. Perry and Nate's romances progressing well when their conflicting schedules allow. They are out on a date when Nate is called to go to a murder scene. Perry's best friend Gayle is a suspect due to him being the cheating boyfriend of Gayle's roommate, Tiffany. Turns out that the victim made a habit of dating 2 women at the same time and enjoyed playing games with them and his family. Tiffany and Gayle found out about his other girlfriend ,India when she showed up at Tiffany's apartment with her friend and brother to confront Tiffany. Nate and his partner Nat keep finding more people who hated the victim and their suspect pool widens instead of narrowing. Perry is placed in danger when India's best friend mistakenly decides that threatening Perry is a good way to make Nate leave his friend India alone. I liked how the book also showed how tedious a police investigation can be anyhow they weeded out suspects. I also enjoyed how Nate tried to be so thoughtful in regards to his and Perry's dates. The Maverick Insurance Agency was more in the periphery of this book until the end when Delia shows India's friend the error of his ways. I'm looking forwards to the next book in this series to see how Perry and Nate's romance further progresses.

This is the 2nd book of the series and book 1 must be read, it's a new mystery but continuation of the relationships (personal and work).
Perry and Nate's relationship continues to develop. Nate is so sweet and considerate of Perry, giving Perry much needed hope, trust, and happiness. But this is threatened when Nate is assigned a new homicide case in which Perry's best friend is a suspect. The romance does take a second seat to the murder mystery but it is not brushed aside. It is woven perfectly, showing how Nate's job affects his life and relationships. And the suspense of the mystery kept me on toes, with many possible suspects. The victim was not a nice person and the author did a great job of expressing how the detectives are still duty bound to solve the murder while not exonerating him of his sins/bad deeds.
The employees of Maverick Insurance are not much involved in this story but when they do decide to get involved.....oh boy, they made sure to do it right or should I say make it right. I love how they've taken Perry under their wing, but still have reservations due to how they know Perry (book 1). I can't wait to discover more secrets about this "insurance company". The suspense is killing me, I need to know how to feel about them 😂

This is the second book in the series, and it’s a good idea to start with book one for context on the characters and their previous experiences. Here we get to see Perry and Nate’s relationship in progress and everything is lovely— until another murder comes along and a new mystery takes center stage. Perry and Nate have a beautiful dynamic: Nate’s care and consideration for Perry is lovely, and they’re both compelling characters. The way investigative work is portrayed here is less “montage of important facts coming together in a few seamless minutes” and more “slog through lots and lots of details and suspects in a grinding but thorough process” which, I suspect, is a bit closer to a real life investigative process than the alternative. Perry’s coworkers continue to be a source of interest, and I will look forward to seeing more from all of these characters in future stories.

I do not recommend reading this as a standalone. This book is just as good as the first one. We have the death of Gayle’s roommate, Tiffany’s, cheating boyfriend. Gayle, who is Perry’s best friend, is a suspect as she hated the man, and knew he was no good. India, the other girl that said POS cheated with, is also a suspect as she is the one that finds out about Tiffany and confronts her. The investigation felt real, with all the dead ends and a lot of work that goes into an investigation. I love how Perry’s coworkers are there for him 1,000%. They will do anything to protect him. The romance is very well written, given all of Perry’s disabilities and they make a great couple. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion.

If you haven’t read the first book in this series, stop and read it first. This is not a standalone novel. We met Perry in the first book. He’s a janitor at a mysterious insurance company. Perry was seriously injured in an attack and his precarious health issues hold him back from doing what he originally intended to do. Perry’s boyfriend is Nate a detective. Their continued relationship is front and center in this second book along with another murder. This time it is Perry’s BFFs roommate boyfriend. We watch as Nate and his partner deal wit this murder.
I am seriously enjoying this series. There is a eerie undercurrent surrounding the employees of Maverick Insurance. I’m not entirely certain what’s going to happen next with Perry and the insurance company. Perry and Nate are a good couple and I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next book.

I am not sure this book could be considered a sequel or even necessary. It doesn’t further the mystery from the first book or the relationship between the MC’s. I liked the detective work, but everything else was unnecessary filler.

I am also having a really hard time with all the migraine and headache talk. Not everything should give every character involved a headache. It was giving me a headache reading about it. There are other ways to write a character’s frustration or annoyance without giving them a headache.

Also, the passage of time was always indicated by our characters bone exhaustion and need to sleep or go home. Once again, there are other ways to show the progression of time in writing.

In the end, this book just felt off. It wasn’t thriller, mystery, or romance enough and it wasn’t a consequential sequel to the first book.

This is the second book in a fantastic series by MJ May; 'Maverick Insurance Mysteries.'

When they advertise themselves as the 'last insurance company you'll ever need,' I guess its sort of a clue that all may not be 'on the up and up' with them.

But Malcolm and Delia are so nice. Perry is treated better than any other 'janitor/custodian' I've ever encountered. He has been especially lucky with his health benefits and treatment after being attacked previously.

But when some of the employees do 'less than honorable things', it's best to look more closely at the inter-workings of an agency such as this one!

Prepare for some excitement, fear, romance, quirky characters and humor. MJ has provided it all!

I did enjoy the first book in the series. I really like these two together, Perry’s strength and Nate’s kindness are a compelling combination. When the first book ends, their relationship is in early stages so I was happy to see how far they’ve come and how they are doing as a couple. I also really enjoyed the partnership between Nate and Nat, they are such a great team. The scenes which take place at Maverick Insurance are my favorite, Perry’s workplace has a good creepy vibe. I am enjoying the mystery, but it is slow moving, a bit less police work might be good. Overall, an engaging plot, and I like seeing the evolution of Perry and Nate’s relationship.

This book is one of those books I will be thinking about for weeks to come! Nate and Perry are such well written characters with so much depth to them. I just really enjoy getting to see them navigate falling in love amidst some very unique and...challenging...circumstances. Perry's continued work for the "insurance" agency while his boyfriend is an active police officer creates some very interesting tension not only in their relationship but also within the larger suspense plot. There were so many different parts of this story that kept me from putting my Kindle down because I was just desperate to see what was going to happen in the next chapter! I can't wait to see what will happen in the future for Perry and Nate!

Not really what was expected

Same scenes repeated over and over, for Perry every night is the same. I understand not remembering something but the subconscious is very powerful. After everything that was confessed to Perry by Malcolm, warning bells should ringing with everyone at Maverick Insurance, especially Malcolm and Willy. Willy only sets off creepy vibes. Nate, Nat, and the Captain are the ones that hears those bells.
Delia genuinely care for Perry. He sees her as wonderful and beautiful and he worries about. She never had anyone who cared for her like that and she willingly will protect him. This book is about the murder of Keith and not about the insurance company, only here and there to keep that story going. He is still happily clueless!!! Ugh!!

Interesting... VERY interesting! I kinda had a good idea of who the murderer was and why, but I truly hated being right. And might I say, I can't decide how I feel about Maverick Insurance... 🤔

Nate and Perry are making progress, relationship-wise... slow progress, but progress nonetheless! I am beginning to think that these two need to quit their jobs and go live on a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean... just sayin'! LOL!!!

Moving on to The Road to Hell: Maverick Insurance Mysteries III... that cover looks promising!

I'm enjoying this series, but I don't read a lot of thriller/mystery types so it's a bit of a novelty for me. I hesitate to label it "romantic suspense" because while I love Nate and Perry together, they *aren't* actually together that much, and as the series title indicates, the overarching plot is absolutely about Maverick Insurance, with the individual book plots also taking precedence over the romance.

Not sure I'd actively seek out more - I'm 100% here solely as a fan of the author, lol - but I *am* having fun binging it and have to admit that while ofc is a horrible human for deceiving poor Perry, my heart is still preemptively aching for the moment Perry will eventually discover that 🙁

As everyone has already stated read the first book this is an ongoing series. With that being said don't worry you'll want to read the first book. This Series has been absolutely fantastic like I'm finding myself scrolling amazon to find out when the next book is coming out because I hope that it'll be coming earlier than we are told it is. I absolutely love the characters in this book and I love that we get a mystery in with our romance I love a good mystery and the other thing that ties that is I love a good romance so I love books like this. This book definitely stole my heart though I guess I should actually say the characters in this book have stolen my heart.

As I began this story I thought, “come on let’s get going” as far as the mystery goes. After just a minute I was admiring this author’s ability to to captivate me. Book two is every bit as good as one was. I loved Maverick’s devotion to Perry, in fact I love these characters. This book is as I said “captivating”. I’d say it is a bit gripping at times but also oh, so sweet, as well. I really appreciated the ending it made me chuckle. Nate and Perry have something special and I eagerly look forward to what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

The Tension Mounts

Perry is a rarity…a naturally good person. Anyone who gets to know him soon understands that.
His significant other, a homicide detective by trade, is well aware how lucky he is to have found Perry.
Perry’s employers are equally impressed with the determination he has to do his best for them, despite the limitations resulting from a devastating physical assault their hardworking custodian suffered some years back.
Yes,Maverick Insurance has treated Perry quite well in most regards. Then why does the place make boyfriend Nate so very uncomfortable?

The second book in this series bring Detective Nate Harmon back with another murder mystery to solve. His new relationship with Perry is slowly building, but this new case is putting stress on them. Meanwhile Perry is still recovering from his last attack and his mysterious employer is keeping a close watch on him. The characters in this series are brilliantly written and I cannot wait to see how it continues.

Great mystery stories. Nate and Perry, are finally in a good place. Then Nate catches another case. Sadly this case is closer to home and touches Perry. The relationship experiences a little strain throwing up roadblocks. The mystery of Maverick draws you in and engages you. The author continues to do an excellent job combining mystery and romance with a few complications. Great story. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I enjoyed this book much better than the 1st one. We find Perry and Nate enjoying their relationship and we also have Nat in the picture. I have enjoyed reading this series and look forward to the next book in this series. Perry and Nate are such a great couple. This book had me wanting to keep reading once I started just to get to the end and find out who the killer was. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

This was probably closer to a 3.5 🌟 for me, but I can't really put my finger on why. I still really enjoyed it, and it was nice that Maverick Insurance didn't have a hand in it this time, but something just felt different. I got distracted reading it and that's unusual. If there's a 3rd book I'll definitely check it out but I'm honestly read for the company to f*ck around and be found out already. How long can Nate and his team have a bad feeling before his stomach ruptures from the pressure?
