Oh my....I'm so happy I'm gonna cry :') Yeah, inadvertently I ended up reading this manga and I really really really loved it!! Glad I found it through random searching in piles of fantasy manga.
It's a story about Kagetora a shinobi/ninja from historical Japan's era accidentally falls into time-travel pond to the present Japan. At present, he meets Beni a girl who has the same name and resembles a lot like a princess he was charged with protecting and mistaking her as the princess from his past. Give lots of story elements unfold and the two end up falling in love.
It's such a great story because it's not only about romance but also friendship and family relationship elements that I think that great enough to make the story so wonderful and so precious. I loved Kagetora and Beni's relationship, and I even grew fond of the rest of the cast, including characters I initially didn't like. There are so many thing I learnt from the story and there's a chapter I cried so hard because I'm so into it. I believe it will makes other reader too.
Overall, this manga is definitely head over heels enjoyable. Unfortunately, can't get enough of it so I need to hunting more like it!!
Binge read the whole series in half a day and I loved it so, so much! I always love stories that have time travel just because they're that much more complicated so they take that much more effort and planning from the author(s).
The samurai feel made me think of Itsuwaribito, which I also enjoyed!
I loved the romance between Kagetora and Beni! At first I thought it was too much of instant romance, but later as I kept realizing more and more about their story and being connected over a large span of time--everything made sense and they are seriously a beautiful couple, fated to be together!
Happy ending = happy reader! It was bad ass to see Kagetora and Hitaki team up to protect their village. Everything came full circle. It was meant to be.
I give this series damn near 5 stars (maybe 4.75?). I wasn’t in love till volume 3 though. After that, I couldn’t put it down. I adore the storyline and I adore the characters. My favorite volumes were when Beni got to stay with the 14 year old Kagetora. It was sweet to see his love beginning to grow for her... Beni wasn’t the most likable in the beginning volumes but she really shone after her and Kagetora got separated. I really enjoyed seeing her grow. I really love this series and will definitely reread it from time to time!
There are so many mangas that I love and say that are my favourites. Okay, plainly said I love this manga, and well, I thought that I should cover it, or my mind wouldn’t stop nagging me about it.
Why I do love this story so much, that I’ve read it about 5 times? Well, it has my favourite themes: Shinobi (ninja) and time slips. Yes, yes, you’ve heard me tight. There are that ninjas, similar to Naruto ones (if anyone watched that anime you’ll know what I’m talking about). The time slips are two-way: present to past and present to future. Surely, mostly we were in the past and not only one era, but also different ones.
The plot of the story is very nice and the great characters make this manga even more amazing. Not only two main – Beni and Kagetora are what make the story, but also two others – Rihito and Hitaki. Now let me just briefly say their relationship to each other. Kagetora and Hitaki are ninjas from the past who time slipped to the present. Kagetora became Beni’s bodyguard because of some circumstances, while Hitaki Rihito’s. While Beni is in love with Kagetora, and that love is mutual, Rihito is her fiancé and he is also in love with her. Did I just unintentionally spoil some good stuff? I don’t think so; just stating their relationship is not enough. The way their relationships progress, that’s what, really is worth reading about.
How do I explain this; this story is amazing whichever way to read it. I loved reading about all characters. Every one of them is broken and only another one can fill them up. Each of them has a heartbreaking story to tell and if you listen closely you will understand each character if not you’ll miss the essential part of them. I suppose the hardest impact on me had Rihito. In the beginning he acts as the villain, but as soon as you look into his story, your impression of his changes cordially. It’s not pity, but maybe it is pity that you are feeling towards him. However, you’re looking forward when he will open the door of his cage and fly. That moment when he has to jump though the whole is the one that makes your heart beat fast, because you get it, soon he’s going to change and you want to witness him breaking his chains.
This manga has a lot of life situations and wen you unravel all the secrets and understand why each character was like he and she was acting, you cry. The ending leaves a question as to why only Hitaki was there, but that may be a story for a new serialization. This manga has a bit of specific humor. You may not get all the jokes, because they are mostly due to playing of words. However, where I was reading the translators explained every joke and made it simple to understand.
I hope you will get some time to read this great story. You will like it a lot. It has everything: love, joy, sorrow, betrayal, action and a lot of mystery. Enjoy it to its fullest
Upon rereading this series for the first time in eight years, I can honestly say this series is CRIMINALLY underrated and deserves far more love. I'm an absolute sucker for the "lovers across time" trope (Inuyasha, Kamisama Kiss, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Red River, etc) and this is no exception, but even in the depths of anime nerdom, NOBODY talks about Shinobi Life! The pacing starts off super fast and escalates the relationships super quickly, but around the halfway point, our lovebirds, Beni and Kagetora, are separated in the past, and the reasons behind their instant bond and various relationships with other characters is slowly unveiled. It's a shame that volumes 8-13 were never printed in English, because this will always be one of my all-time, underrated favorite shoujo manga.

Original Review: 12/23/15
This series hooked me in right at the start, back in late September '15.... only to leave me semi-uninterested for a couple months, about halfway through due to a seemingly repetitive loop of slipping back and forth through time... But the past few days had me devouring the latter third of the series, and I'm so very glad I did!
Kagetora is a ninja/shinobi who accidentally falls into a time portal to modern-day Japan, where he meets Beni, a feisty yet lonely teen who's out to get "revenge" against her father. Kagetora mistakes her for her ancestor, who shares her name, and whom he had sworn to protect back in his time. After a ton of misunderstandings and chaos (which, trust me, is just the beginning), eventually the protective ninja realizes Beni is different from her ancestor, but he still loves her for who she is. They have a sweet blossoming relationship..... until shit hit the fan. Several time slips and mind-fuckery later, we learn about Kagetora's past, as well as his friend/enemy Hitaki, and more...
Shinobi Life is both a cutesy shoujo romance, and borderline CLAMP level of sheer migraine-inducing complexities (but, to be fair, this series is still not NEARLY as bad as CLAMP can be with their work...). I loved Kagetora and Beni's relationship, and I even grew fond of the rest of the cast, including characters I initially didn't like. It really shows the lighter sides of people, and how easily broken our souls can be at a young age. The series talks about the limitations of messing with time travel, and yet how strangely it ties in everything else (fate, so they say).
Overall, I liked this series. Is it amazing? No, but it's definitely enjoyable and definitely made it to my higher-up favorites list. ^.^
This series has been around for years, and I'm glad I was able to finally finish it. I try not to read really long manga series---but this one kept my attention. Even when I felt the middle was a bit long---I knew Conami had to tie everything together---and I loved how all the characters were related somehow. I especially felt this series was a little bit darker---and less made-for-TV troupe dramatics. The series felt complete---because you know...I just wanted a happy ending for Beni and Kagetora. I wanted to find out why the backstory of her mom, and why he was just so angry and distant at Beni. The story did not disappoint. That was the only thing I cared about. Conami did great on creating three dimensional side characters. I was satisfied at the end---because the beauty was in the visuals.
Well then, How should I state this, I would say first say that it's well written and well *DRAWN*. However, going back to the past reminded me of going to the past theories in "Orange", and of going to the past in "Harry Potter" where it was dangerous to meet with your past self too. The new thing here is going to the future. The plot is some kind of a headache to the reader, you never know what started first. Falling for someone from the past who was serving a princess who liked, or say someone important, reminded me of "Iniyusha" (if that is how it is written). I gave four stars for the drawing (mostly) and the good-somehow story. The one star deducted for all of the repetition I had to suffer from.
Oh man....Can't believe its over! I couldn't help but cry for Beni's father. The meeting with his wife, that was so emotional, and the expression and the art really grabbed my heart. I wish he would have stopped her, but it wasn't right to do so. I'm glad he got to tell her what he feels. And man is Hitaki hot or what! Gosh I feel for him, I really do! Poor guy! I'm glad that all of them are FINALLY back in the present. Phew. I feel really bad for Rihito. He was a very nice character. Just loved this manga so damn much!!!!!!
A really nice manga, with great character development, lovely art, that's both beautiful and dynamic. The love story is really sweet and still it doesn't overtake the whole manga, making it more enjoyable. The ending was a bit bland, but it fit well. Looking forward to reading more from the mangaka.
