"Did you see that little boy's red face?"

"He must have something wrong with him..."

Poor Martin Pebble . . . he can't stop blushing. His face is red as a beet, a tomato, and strawberries in summer.

It's a lonely life until one day . . .

ATISHOO!

He meets Roddy Rackett, who can't stop sneezing.

This sweet tale of enduring friendship deserves to be a classic.

The story of a boy who blushes too much (except when he has a good reason to) and must suffer others incessant remarks about his condition. He befriends a boy who sneezes too much (who likewise suffers constant remarks about the "cold" he doesn't have). They're the best of friends until one day his friend moves away without notice. Martin would be able to contact his friend (his friend having left his new address on a slip of paper for him) if only Martin's father would stop complaining about bills and paperwork long enough to find it for him. ...He never does, and years and years go by until the two friends meet again on a crowded city bus. As Sempe remarks, old friends usually say they'll make plans to see one another again, and they usually even mean this... but it doesn't pan out for lots of grown up reasons. But that isn't the case with these guys. Which is nice. But I also like the Sempe points out the more common, sad reality. When he started to talk about what usually happens between old friends I actually started to get nervous that the story would just end like that... neither of them caring enough to REKINDLE WHAT THEY ONCE HAD.

BUT THEY DO, THEY DO.

Right. So. Hilarious drawings. If you find a copy of this in front of your face you should absoluely READ IT.

Picked this up last summer whilst browsing through the brilliant children's section at The Strand in NYC. Never heard of it, but it's a French classic and one of those beautifully drawn human tales. I read this last weekend and have put in on Annika's bookshelf for her to discover herself.

I love Sempe. As a child I read Petit Nicolas over and over and then read the stories all over again to my own children. His artwork is wonderful. This is a simple tale about a boy who can't stop blushing and his friendship with a boy who can't stop sneezing. It's charming and funny and the illustrations are, as you would expect, perfection.

This book was a French classic since 1969 and has now been translated to English and it is just an adorable book. The illustrations are very simple pen sketches but just so much to see in them. The story is a great moral story for children while being an amusing tale for adults as well.

The book itself is a lovely square hardback which would look great as a coffee table book although it is a bit cumbersome while trying to cuddle a two year old and hold it up for her to see as well.

One of those books that you just stumble across while browsing that will become a classic in your own household and I am so glad that MrsMac did come across it and was kind enough to pass it onto us. Booklovers keep your eye out for this one. 5 out of 5 for me.

This is a lovely book first published in France in the mid 60's. This version was translated into English and published in the 00's. It is a charming tale about a young boy who blushes bright red at in opportune moments and his friendship with another boy who sneezes uncontrollably. The story is gentle and heartwarming and will appeal to the child in you. The illustrations are simple ink line drawings with minimal red colouring which add to the childlike simplicity.

The whole book, which I rescued from a jumble sale I was helping to run, is a beautiful large format hardback, published by Phaidon who specialise in nice looking books. Although it is inherently a children's book, the production values elevate it to a shelf sized work of art... And one that makes you feel good too.

Delightful story of friendship and unusual characteristics – blushing and sneezing - told in black sketches (reminiscent of Peanuts) with rare appearances of watercolor. The main figures are tiny on the page but express the emotion very well. For tween, YA and adult audiences.

I discovered this charming children's book a couple years ago, and it is one of my favourites from the genre. The illustrations are whimsical, and the adventures of friendship and joy are lovely as well. If (when) I ever have children, I will definitely make sure they read Martin Pebble.
