To soldier-of-fortune Jeb Sledge, the assignment seemed simple: Rescue an heiress and her journalist friend from Colombian guerrillas and collect a sizable paycheck for his troubles. But things rarely go as planned.
After stumbling upon a mass of dead bodies, Kristin Halvorsen isn't about to leave Colombia without the proof she needs for the story of a lifetime, and Sledge soon finds himself ensnared in a chemical weapons conspiracy that involves civilians, guerillas and high-ranking government officials.
But neutralizing the factory isn’t enough. Where are the weapons that have already been fabricated? Who are the intended targets? How potent and far-reaching are the effects?
A pursuit through South America, the U.S. and the Caribbean embroils Sledge and Kristin in a mission to prevent a catastrophic attack—and leaves Sledge fighting to save both their lives.
I'm working now as a novelist and poet, also teaching at writers' groups and conferences. In a prior incarnation I served in two wars with the U.S. Army. Afterwards, I taught English literature at two liberal arts colleges. The World's Perfect Woman consented to honor me in marriage, and we enjoyed six decades together until the Lord needed another alto for His heavenly choir. I live in the woods near Houston, TX, writing fiction, poetry, and essays on current topics.
Billionaire Steve Spinner has been manipulating his daughter Jocelyn since her birth. Now he’s endangered her life by forcing her and journalist Kristin Halvorsen to embark on a dangerous mission in Columbia. They are posing as bird watchers, in that South American country, when they stumble upon a brutal massacre in the village of Chozadolor and are captured by a group of guerrilla fighters headed by the ruthless and viscous Diego Contreras. Kristen took photos of the massacre which show most of the men massacred in the village were butchered, but some apparently died due to some sort of chemical agent. Contreras’ men smash Kristen’s cameras, but she manages to hide a memory card with photos at the gruesome site.
No amount of money can entice soldier of fortune Jeb Sledge to rescue the young women. The hyper-responsible soldier of fortune who must right the wrongs in this world was the Old Sledge. He is determine to become the more relaxed New Sledge. This idea of the Old Sledge and the New Sledge confronting each other is a theme running through DEADLY ADDITIVE.
When Spinner dangles the name Diego Contreras as bait, Sledge bites. In the not so distant past Contreras and his men killed Alita, a young Colombian woman from a notable family Sledge had fallen in love with. Her entire family was killed in the attack and Sledge was severely wounded. However, in his gut, Sledge knows Spinner, the master manipulator is keeping something from him.
Sledge is assisted by Roger Brinkman, a retired CIA operative, now running his own private ‘information service’ which doesn’t have the constraints of a US government agency. Brinkman puts Sledge onto the quirky Ramirez family who offer their special services. The entire family speaks in malapropisms which adds a touch of humor in just the right places. Two of my favs are: “It’s time to wake up and smell the coffins” and “That I must take with a fifth of amendments.”
Few male writers can write about the internal drama going on inside a woman who has been sexually threatened or abused. Donn Taylor does this extremely well by not intensely highlighting it (as many authors are inclined to do). He simply states it. We, the reader, understand what the character is going through.
The inspirational element is authentic and organic to the story as Jeb and Kristin, having confronted abject evil, try to figure out if anything has a greater meaning. This is an edge of your seat, page turning story.
Great action adventure. The main character of Jeb Sledge is everything you want in a hero, flawed but deadly with a tender side, and Kristen is a smart, stubborn, steadfast heroine. You’ll love the book. Just when you think everything is all wrapped up, Taylor throws in another twist.
Traveling with Jeb thru South American , Carribean and US as he is trying to stop a chemical attack. Kristen wants that one story that will make a name for her. Upon seeing something in this small village maybe a death sentence for her, Good action, fast pace story and audio added to it. For my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Very enjoyable read, lots of actions, some humour and the story moves quickly. I like each of the characters, Raul was particularly funny. The action is suspenseful at times, but it is not too intense. Mostly it comes back to following God. Good christian fiction. I received a free copy of the book form Pelican Book Group, but the opinions here are my own.
Deadly Additive by Donn Taylor is a suspense novel with kidnapping, conspiracy, and chemical weapons. Jeb Sledge is a former Special Ops member, now a soldier-of-fortune still in the reserves. His doctor has just declared him fully recovered from the wounds he received on his last job. In looking for future employment, Sledge wants to leave behind Old Sledge and begin a new phase as New Sledge. He has been approached by a wealthy prospective employer about rescuing an heiress Jocelyn Spinner and her friend Kristin Halvorsen who are being held captive by Columbian guerrillas. The pay is good, and Sledge has a score to settle with one of the captors, so what is to keep Sledge from accepting?
I loved this book! The first paragraph drew me immediately into the suspense. By the end of the first chapter, I was laughing. The cycle continued throughout the book, mostly breath-stealing suspense but mixed with unexpected laughter. Sledge was a no-nonsense type person. He did what needed doing on his various jobs, but he also reflected afterward on the emptiness he felt after the adrenaline drained away. Something was missing in his life, and he was trying to figure out what it was. Kristin was courageous in the presence of her captors. She was a bit stubborn and uncooperative with Sledge, but she was a tenacious, conscientious reporter. Jocelyn didn’t seem to have much backbone, yet that could be attributed to her father’s tendency to dominate and steamroll. The Ramirez family of Ramon, Elena, and Raul was unforgettable in a very favorable way. I especially loved Raul. There were plenty of other characters, but these stood out to me. All of these characters were well-developed and believable.
I would unhesitatingly recommend this book to any mature reader who enjoys an action-packed story. It is obviously not written for the very young. There are descriptions of shootings during the missions, some mentions of blood, etc, but that should be expected with this type of book. I finished the book in a day and hated when I had to put it aside temporarily to complete a task. I will definitely be looking for more books by Donn Taylor in the future.
I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
Review Title: Suspense Woven with Romance and Humor (review of Deadly Additive by Donn Taylor) Reviewer: Janice S. Garey ***** 5 Stars
The author, Donn Taylor, expertly weaves together a complex tale of suspense involving characters under false identity, a hero type who wants to start a new life without all the excitement and life-threatening adventures, and international bad and good guys. The story worked for me on several levels, although I do not typically read this type novel.
The book is high on action for those who like plots to be action driven. The characters are well developed with their motives explored, but the reader does not get so much into their heads as to be distracted from the thickening plot. Romance seems probable between two main characters, but not without hesitations based on past experiences. They start out with low level respect for each other, but as the story puts them in difficult situations, respect and care develop naturally.
The characters start with only a little understanding of the Christian faith, but in time and under pressure, they learn how faith in God sustains through the worst of times. I liked the focus on both the individuals and the well-being of the masses who could be terribly damaged by chemical weapons. The self-sacrificial attitude which led to acts to save lives shows the spirit of Christianity in action.
My husband and I listened to the Audible audio book version and found it to be well read. I received the paperback book from bookfun.org and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I believe most mature Christian audiences will appreciate this story if they enjoy suspense. I also think those who are not Christian will enjoy the book because it is low key in its treatment of conversations about faith.
Thrilling! Intriguing! On the edge of your seat reading! Deadly Additive is an exciting Christian adventure novel written by Donn Taylor. Jeb Sledge is looking forward to a new life with less danger when he is offered a job by ruthless billionaire, Steve Spinner, to find and rescue his spoiled daughter, Jocelyn, and her journalist friend, Kristin Halvorsen, who have been kidnapped by the guerilla army in Columbia, South America. At first, Jeb refuses the two hundred thousand dollar offer, but he decides to accept when he finds out that the guerilla leader, Diego Contreras, who was responsible for killing his fiancé and leaving him with near death wounds the previous year, is responsible for the kidnapping. Meanwhile in Columbia, Kristin and Jocelyn are being held prisoners after discovering and photographing a mass killing of twenty villagers by some mysterious means. Unknown to Contreras, Kristen hides the memory card before the guerrillas destroy her camera. After Jeb and his helpers rescue the ladies, Kristin slips off to go retrieve the memory card. This is the opportunity of her life for an important story that will advance her career. Jeb, believing that she is Jocelyn, goes to rescue her again. What dangers will Kristen lead Jeb and herself into for the story? Will they be able to save the Americans that are the target of this “new weapon of destruction?” Both Jeb and Kristen are indifferent to God and religion due to circumstances in their childhood and family. Will they be able to resolve these feelings to develop a relationship with the Lord and each other. I received a copy from the author and publisher of The Book Club Network in exchange for an honest review.
Deadly Additive by Donn Taylor is a fast-paced thriller that keeps the reader riveted to the plot. It embraces plenty of action and suspense to entertain while presenting an underlying spiritual journey of the main characters. Jeb Sledge is an Army reservist, decorated for Special Forces work in Afghanistan and just recuperated from an assassin’s hit gained in one of his many perilous duties undertaken for noble causes. He is pressured into rescuing a billionaire’s daughter from Colombian guerillas who kidnapped her and a college friend for ransom.
Spirited, strong-willed journalist, Kristin Halvorsen, college friend of Steve Spinner’s daughter, has traded identities with Jocelyn Spinner. And she has stumbled upon an atrocity that could result in the story of a lifetime—if she can secure her proof and if she can escape with her life.
The lives of Sledge and Kristin intersect, and each finds hope again after years of emptiness and being spiritually adrift. Both characters are well developed and appealing. Their challenging and harrowing fight for survival could be taken straight out of the headlines today. No less satisfying is the supporting cast of colorful characters—the Ramirez family; Brinkman, a retired CIA officer who is an expert on data on international crime; and even the villainous characters. I highly recommend this exciting novel and look forward to reading the other novels by Taylor. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
Deadly Additive was a book that kept me on the edge of my seat and took me all over the world. There was not a slow spot in the story, but the action kept going. I just wanted to take a breather. This played out like an action packed thriller in my mind and if I was in any kind of a fix like that, I would want a Jeb Sledge to not only rescue me, but be on my side. Jeb and Kristin are the main characters and we really get to know both of them well. Kristin does some pretty bold actions that in all honesty I probably wouldn’t have the guts to do. Like I said, this book kept me on the edge of my seat and I wondered a time or two how she was going to make it out alive. And poor Jeb, he had to really work hard at a job that he wasn’t too sure he wanted to do anymore. This deals with some scary chemical warfare, and the bad guys really don’t have any redeeming qualities. With all that is against them Kristin and Jeb both are dealing with pasts and inner conflict. Not only do we get to know Jeb and Kristin, but we also get to know the secondary characters as well. And I do not want to be “impolite” and not mention Raul. He was probably my favorite side character. This was a hard to put down read and I could really see it as a movie. I received this book from the Book Club Network, Inc. and the opinions are my own.
Jeb Sledge, hoping to reinvent himself into "New Sledge", reluctantly takes on one last soldier of fortune assignment. Deadly Additive is an intriguing story of the rescue of two young women from Colombian guerrillas which leads to the uncovering of a sinister plot to unleash a munition filled with not one or two, but three, chemical agents. From one end of the United States to the other, from St Kitts to Colombia, the action just never stops. Just when the reader thinks things might be resolving, another twist to the plot sends Sledge barreling into another dangerous situation. The author, Donn Taylor, sweetens the storyline with a bit of romance, and a bit of humor as some of the quirky characters have "odd habits of speech" ("I am a sheep off the old black", "your job would be harder than passing a camel through the eye of a noodle.") The life-threatening adventures from start to finish keep the pages turning fast and furiously. Throughout the novel, the reader is reminded there is a God-shaped hole in one's life that can only be filled by God, not by money, or love, or an adrenaline filled adventure. Deadly Additive is definitely a recommended read for those who thrive on thrilling action-packed intrigue. I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.
Fantastic Read!!!! Suspense, Guerrilla Fighters, Political Intrigue, Mass Murder, Kidnapping, Deadly Chemical Agents, Switched Identities, FBI & CIA Involvement along with vivid description, captivating writing, thrills, chills with unexpected twists, great supporting characters blending together then add a touch of romance… this makes the story into a great read!!!!! The main characters are two bold characters, Jeb Sledge a soldier of fortune and Kristin Halvorsen, a journalist. They are well developed characters sharing undeniable chemistry. They met when Sledge was sent to Columbia to rescue and retrieve Billionaire Steve Spinner daughter, Jocelyn. She had been sent with Kristin Halvorsen by her father to Columbia. They are posing as bird watchers. But after Kristen photographs a guerilla massacre, they are captured by a group of guerrilla fighters. Kristen managed to hide the card with her photographs in the brush where they were captured. But she must escape, go back and retrieve them. They find themselves involved in an unpredictable plot with twists getting twistier and situations more hazardous by the minute. Spiritual and inspirational aspects are interjected throughout The story. Thank you to book fun.org for this Book. My opinion is my own.
“Deadly Additive” is a riveting book. I read it in two days and then searched online for more books by Donn Taylor! I loved his sense of humor, the mystery, action and even the light romance. “Deadly Additive” is a military action story, featuring Jeb Sledge, a man who seems to not think very highly of himself. Although he seems to spend most of his life doing good things, helping the underdog and rescuing the hurting, he feels empty inside. When he spends some time with a missionary, he begins to question his belief system, searching his life and his heart, all during intense action and being in highly stressful situations. Donn Taylor kept me guessing as to what would happen next, and I must say it is his fault I did not get my house cleaned! I was impressed with Taylor’s ability to express his feelings in print. I feel I learned a little bit more about terrorism, and how just taking care of one terrorist, or one place of illegal business is not enough to protect folks. All terrorism needs to be wiped out, including the money men behind the scenes. I was given this book by The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book is a fast paced and action packed thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. One that you don't want to stop reading until you get to the end of the story. There is a lot of suspense with some romance and much more. I loved how the author included inspirational and spiritual aspects in the story. Donn is a very talented writer and I love to read his books. Jocelyn's father is a very rich and controlling man and has been controlling her life since she was born. She is forced to go on a dangerous mission to Columbia with journalist Kristin Halvorsen. After witnessing a brutal massacre and being captured their lives are in mortal danger. Jeb Sledge is a soldier of fortune who wants to leave his old life behind and become a new person. However his plans change when he s forced by billionaire Steve Spinner to go to Columbia to rescue his daughter. A thrilling rescue. You have to read this book to get the full impact of the story and the danger that surrounds the characters.
If you love mature action thrillers you will love this story. I highly recommend this book.
I was given a free copy of this book from bookfun.org for my opinion and review.
This was an exciting and intriguing thriller with likeable characters. Kristin and Sledge are thrown together in a guerilla terrorist camp in Colombia and must work together to stop the selling and use of weapons of mass destruction. The respect between them grows and leads to attraction---an unlikely romance between two characters that call each other "Brat" and "Dumb Gorilla". Suspense and thrills start right from page one and continue to the exciting and satisfying ending.
Kristin and Sledge are both intent of righting wrongs and fighting evil. charging into danger without counting the cost. In spite of their successes, however, they both acknowledge an emptiness and dissatisfaction in their lives that even a romance won't fix. Both had reasons for turning from the faith of their parents but have come to realize that they just might need God in their lives after all. Good message and a fun, clean thriller.
I received this book from The Book Club network in exchange for this honest opinion.
Deadly Additive by Donn Taylor is a fast paced suspenseful read. Sledge begins by rescuing two women, one an heiress and one a journalist, from Columbia. However, it soon turns into much more than that. The two women found a pile of dead bodies just before being kidnapped. It us obvious that they didn't die a normal death. Sledge gets involved in trying to find out why there is some kind of large hidden factory not far from where the rescue takes place. It involves several countries, many dangers, many dangerous men, and chemical weapons.
This was a great read. I stayed up late to finish this one. A suspense, mystery tale with a little romance thrown in. Wonderful read, and I had a very hard time putting this book down. Once again, I'm thrilled that Christian Fiction's suspense books are more available now, with better authors and books. I love this genre, but I like it clean as well. Highly recommend this read.
I received this book through bookfun.org for my honest opinion which I have given.
Jeb was a soldier for hire. But he's ready to retire. He returns to his apartment to relax and plan his next move. But when one last job offer comes through he finds himself forced to take it. He must rescue a spoiled rich girl and her friend, a reporter. Her father will stop at nothing to get her back. But nothing is like what he's been told and now he's just hoping to make it out alive.
This was a good suspense novel with plenty of action. There was a touch of romance, but it wasn't over the top or mushy. The author used one of the secondary characters to bring in an element of faith that while at times subtle, got the message of salvation across very well. The two main characters were well written and their characteristics fit well with the plot. I also enjoyed quite a few of the secondary characters. This was a book that I enjoyed, but I'm sure my husband will enjoy reading as well. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I received this book free of charge from Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
What a thrilling, fast paced, adventure novel! Jeb Sledge is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy billionaire and her journalist friend. After rescuing the young women from the jungle of Columbia, Jeb discovers this is more than a simple kidnapping – much more is at stake! Can he thwart the evil plans or will they get him first? And who is behind all this evil?
This book is not only thrilling and suspenseful but it also has the characters realizing that fame and fortune is not enough, that they have “an emptiness inside” and they “lack something.” At one point Sledge “surrendered to the darkness. A light slap on his face brought him back. ‘There is one thing we can do…We can pray.’”
I loved reading this book and recommend it, however, if you are squeamish I don’t recommend it for you as it has shootings and blood, etc. I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.
Deadly Additive by Don Taylor is a Christian Romantic Suspense and this is a page turner.
Jeb Sledge is a mercenary and receives a call from a former CIA agent. Roger Brinkman wants him to rescue two young ladies from Columbian guerillas. One is a reporter and her friend is the daughter of billionaire Steve Spinner.
Jeb accepts the job but nothing goes as planned. The action and suspense will keep you turning pages. Donn Taylor conveys emotions without any profanity but you will love the battle between good and evil. Jeb is anew Christian and struggles not to fall back into his old ways.
Kristin and Jocelyn continue to confuse Jeb. Kristin isn't sure how to take Jeb's faith. However, rescuing the girls is only the tip of the of what lies ahead.
Fast paced suspense with chemical weapons, pursuit through South America, the Caribbean and U.S. will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved this book, romance with suspense and a page turner.
Donn Taylor’s book, Deadly Additive, is a roller-coaster ride of excitement. I don’t normally gravitate toward Action/Adventure novels, but as a fan of Taylor’s writing, I knew I’d like this one. He mixes switched identities, loathsome bad guys, and an appealing hero and heroine into a hard-to-put-down novel. The action ranges from the tropics to the northern United States, and in every case his descriptions make you feel you’re part of the story. One extra feature that I particularly enjoyed was the inclusion of a family who mangle the English language with malapropisms. I remembered Taylor’s humor from his previous book, Rhapsody in Red, and was glad to see it surface again in Deadly Additive. If you’re looking for an enjoyable read over these dark winter nights, I recommend Deadly Additive. The tropical scenes will help you forget the cold.
Deadly Additive was an exciting read with characters that kept me interested in not only the upper story (saving the world), but also the lower story (saving the girl). The storyline is thrilling from the beginning until the end leaving you wanting more. Sledge and Kristen are an unlikely couple who find love in a strange place. Both realize they will have to go ‘back to their roots’ and bring God into the equation. Realizing their upbringing created issues that only God can fix and then turning those areas over to God. The action and plausibility of this book is enthralling with Sledge fighting guerillas who are set on using chemical weapons to achieve their goal of destroying America. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
For me, three stars is a good review. I love Donn Taylor's writing. And this book, different from everything else he wrote, is a suspense novel dealing with chemical warfare--a chilling reality in today's world.
Jeb Sledge and Kristen, the Brat, Halvorson uncover a plot to sell chemical weapons, weapons cruelly used on peasants in Colombia. The narrative weaves from Colombia to the U.S to the Carrebean and back.
My favorite had to be Raul Ramirez with his malapropisms. True to Taylor's style, Raul made me laugh out loud.
If you like suspense and a more narrative pov, you'll love the book.
Great story! I refuse to give up anything. Suffice it to say, Sledge does not get his wish to "live the quiet life".
After just a short while of traveling with Sledge, you can see beyond the tough guy exterior. And although he strives to be on the side of good, something is always missing from making the mission complete, and it takes a missionary to bring it to light for Sledge. I love the enlightening speech and matter of fact way the truth is told. And Sledge, in his thick headed stubbornness continues to try to do things on his own.
This is a great adventure story, with added depth. Definitely keeps the pages turning. I loved it!
Are you a suspense fan? Do you crave action and adventure in the stories that you read? Deadly Additive is a new suspense novel by Donn Taylor. In it, Jeb Sledge is asked to rescue a wealthy man’s daughter and her reporter friend, who are both being held captive by kidnappers in Columbia. But things aren’t what they seem in this story; there are a few surprises along the way. The novel contains a touch of romance, but the book's focus is definitely more suspense than romantic suspense. With well-researched details, fine-tuned description, and ongoing action, this book is sure to appeal to men and women who enjoy suspense.
"Deadly Additive" by Donn Taylor is an action-packed book. It is filled with suspense and keeps you guessing all the way through.
Jeb Sledge is given an assignment to rescue an heiress and her journalist friend from Colombian guerrillas. It seemed pretty simple to Sledge, but things don't go as simple as he thought. He and the journalist stumble upon way more complicated stuff going on. There are so many different twists and turns in this novel!
I would recommend this book to anyone especially those that enjoy an action-packed suspense-filled novel.
I received this book from bookfun for my honest opinion.
Even though I rarely read military action adventure novels, I jumped at the chance to read Deadly Additive. I met Donn at a couple of conferences and was familiar with his dry wit, so I knew this would be a good one. I was not disappointed.
This adventure is full of intrigue and romance as Jeb Sledge butts heads with journalist, Kristen Halvorsen. The suspense suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat with South American drug lords, chemical warfare and greedy American capitalists. If you want an inspiring action-filled read, Deadly Additive is the one for you. Loved it!
Raul and his family in Columbia are just a few of the characters in the book adding flavor to our hero and heroine. Figuring out where the “bad guys” will go and what they will do next make the book fast-paced and the many levels of espionage keeps you glued to the story. Better than watching a movie because Mr. Taylor brings out so many emotions not easily viewed on film. Hints at the heart change of the hero and heroine are hinted at throughout with the culmination of finding peace in the end, an added benefit of Christian fiction.
It's all about action and momentum. If you like Robert Ludlum or Ronie Kendig, then Donn Taylor has the book for you. I like the turn of cliches that one character uses. Jeb is the alpha male-don't-underestimate-how-he-looks type. The action may slow down some, just long enough to gain your breath, and then you are back into action. The title really fitting the story is an added bonus. To me, this is a pretty good novel to read without getting into too much political descriptions. And even the faith thread was handled in a way that came out naturally. Definitely a recommended read.
Definitely recommend this one. It's a Christian suspense- I know what you're thinking, I was skeptical too, but it's not at all preachy. I think it winds religion through in a realistic way without losing the story. It's a believable plot that kept me turning the pages. Very well written- I'd say this reached the level of making me forget I was reading. It was an intellectual action novel with likable characters. It reminded me of Tom Clancy's novels.
This is a great suspense novel with a soldier of fortune type action. Taylor is a taut writer. He has managed to insert some humor into the novel too. At the beginning of the book Taylor has a section letting the reader know how much of the novel is based on facts. I liked that. Well written and lots of action, a great novel. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1inKIME. I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
This was a fairly good book. It had some romance and a bit of action. It took you all over the world. It was a fun book. I hope to read more of his. I received this from the book fun .org for a fair and honest opinion.
