Nymphs

Rate this book
In 1900, Dutch art historians André Jolles and Aby Warburg constructed an experimental dialogue in which Jolles supposed he had fallen in love with the figure of a young woman in a painting: “A fantastic figure—shall I call her a servant girl, or rather a classical nymph?…what is the meaning of it all?…Who is the nymph? Where does she come from?” Warburg’s response: “in essence she is an elemental spirit, a pagan goddess in exile,” serves as the touchstone for this wide-ranging and theoretical exploration of female representation in iconography.

In Nymphs, the newest translation of Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s work, the author notes that academic research has lingered on the “pagan goddess,” while the concept of “elemental spirit,” ignored by scholars, is vital to the history of iconography. Tracing the genealogy of this idea, Agamben goes on to examine subjects as diverse as the aesthetic theories of choreographer Domineco da Piacenza, Friedrich Theodor Vischer’s essay on the “symbol,” Walter Benjamin’s concept of the dialectic image, and the bizarre discoveries of photographer Nathan Lerner in 1972. From these investigations, there emerges a startlingly original exploration of the ideas of time and the image.

Agamben is the rare writer whose ideas and works have a broad appeal across many fields, and Nymphs will engage not only the author’s devoted fans in philosophy, legal theory, sociology, and literary criticism, but his growing audience among art theorists and historians as well.

Giorgio Agamben is one of the leading figures in Italian and contemporary continental philosophy. He is the author of Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life; Remnants of Auschwitz: The Witness and the Archive; Profanations; The Signature of All Things: On Method, and other books. Through the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s he treated a wide range of topics, including aesthetics, literature, language, ontology, nihilism, and radical political thought.

In recent years, his work has had a deep impact on contemporary scholarship in a number of disciplines in the Anglo-American intellectual world. Born in Rome in 1942, Agamben completed studies in Law and Philosophy with a doctoral thesis on the political thought of Simone Weil, and participated in Martin Heidegger’s seminars on Hegel and Heraclitus as a postdoctoral scholar.

He rose to international prominence after the publication of Homo Sacer in 1995. Translated into English in 1998, the book’s analyses of law, life, and state power appeared uncannily prescient after the attacks on New York City and Washington, DC in September 2001, and the resultant shifts in the geopolitical landscape. Provoking a wave of scholarly interest in the philosopher’s work, the book also marked the beginning of a 20-year research project, which represents Agamben’s most important contribution to political philosophy.

I feel grateful that Agamben's clout seems to tower to such an extent that its wave can crash up onto the shore and give us the froth of Nymphs. The gently obscurantist logic slips away from me even though I am able to follow, as our ropemaker twines images with nymphs and bids man (and specifically man) (following the example of Aby Warburg) to grab onto this rope lest he be blown away by time. Don't be afraid to melt back into the waters, my friend.

I woke up from a very intense and personally meaningful dream after quite a caffeinated night reading the first part of this—got out of bed and read the rest and my little book is full of argumentative but pleased notes and am excited to voice note Mia who recommended it, in the deeper morning. As another reviewer on here has said, it's a very pleasant dip no matter what you think

‘The true locus of the dancer is not the body and its movement but the image as a “Medusa’s head”, as a pause that is not immobile but simultaneously charged with memory and dynamic energy. This means, however, that the essence of dance is no longer movement but time.’

‘dancing through phantasmata’ as conveying ‘many things that one cannot tell’

Not the best Agamben, rather thin, but still it's fun to spend some time in Agamben's mind.

A slim book that tries to connect our concept of what an image is with the idea of what a nymph may represent. I like parts but over all it was superficial. Can be read in an hour so is well worth it just to roll some ideas around in your head.
