Mycroft Holmes #2

Mycroft Holmes and the Adventure of the Naval Engineer

Rate this book
'The stories are atmospheric, fast-moving, ingenious and very enjoyable.' - Roger Johnson, The District Messenger

When a corpse is found by the fire in Mycroft Holmes’s rooms in London’s Pall Mall early one morning, the brother of the country’s most famous detective is about to face the greatest mystery of his career – and the greatest danger as well. Within two hours, Mycroft Holmes has been arrested on a charge of murder and taken in handcuffs to Wormwood Scrubs prison. Has he been framed by his greatest enemy, the elusive master criminal the German Count Von Stoltenburg? What happened to the man who changed the locks on his front door six weeks before, found lying senseless on the pavement on his way to Mycroft’s rooms? And what of the man who identified the body as that of a naval engineer?

From his prison cell Mycroft Holmes turns the great engines of his mental powers onto the problem, assisted by the convict who runs the prison, Chalky The Shotgun White. The game’s afoot. But time is short.

Mycroft Holmes and The Adventure of the Naval Engineer is the second in David Dickinson’s brilliant series of novellas that started with Mycroft Holmes and the Adventure of the Silver Birches.

Praise for David Dickinson

'One of the story’s strengths is the portrait it paints of Mycroft, a picture rich with details about his lifestyle, habits, and associates...mystery itself is straightforward and fast-paced...provides new perspectives to enjoy' - Baker Street Babes Podcast

'A cracking yarn, beguilingly real from start to finish... you have to pinch yourself to remind you that it is fiction - or is it?' - Peter Snow

'This is detective fiction in the grand style; the characters and the plot soar upwards and carry us in their wake. Powerscourt's debut in this intoxicating book is the start of a gilded life in the archives of crime.' - James Naughtie

'In this excellent novel, Dickinson weaves a tale of blackmail and murder among the royals late in Victoria's reign... One hopes to see more of Lord Powerscourt and his friends in the near future.' - Publishers Weekly

David Dickinson is the best-selling author of the Lord Powerscourt series of historical mysteries, including 'Death of a Pilgrim' and 'Death of an Old Master'.

Entertaining mystery listening 🎶🎵

This kindle e-book novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book 2 of 6.

Mrs. Hudson finds a dead body by the fire place and Mycroft covered in blood asleep in the bed. Mycroft is arrested and taken to jail. A number of people work to find the truth. Then a break and the case falls apart.

I would recommend this series and author to fans of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes and mystery novels. 2024

Misleading title, plot confusing.

This is the second Mycroft Holmes story and I did not like it as well as the first one. It seems to me that these shorter stories try to cram everything together and that makes them harder to follow; the character of Tobias just pops up from nowhere. I don't know if I want to read any more of these books.

Another well story in the series

I have now read all the books in the series and this is one of the best. They do not need to be read in order. Mycroft is arrested for murder and the action begins. Well written with lots of details and twists and turns with a surprise ending. A fun read.

Cheers for Mycroft Holmes

Mycroft gets set up for murder. A corrupt new policeman arrests Mycroft and throws him into prison. Oddly enough, Mycroft solves the case with the help of old friends and prisoners. Read and enjoy!

Book 2

Better than book one but still poorly written/edited. If poorly edited then the author never reread his work. Makes use of all the characters from sherlock Holmes lexicon in some manner.

Just silly. The great auditor lugged off to prison on clearly fraudulent charges, where he makes pals of all the criminals. They get along just fine, and together they save the day.

Great Read!

I must say another great read. I enjoyed the plot and new characters. I hope to see Chalky White, Chief, Jaikie and the gang in more of this series.

There were so many threads to this story but in the end most of them seemed to be dropped in order to rush through an ending. What could have been quite an in-depth tale ended up being nothing more than a lengthy chapter.
