Whew! While an excellent window into the early days of science fiction, this book was a bit of a doozy for me. The stories tend to run together, as they mostly explore one of two themes: "look at these tiny things!" and "things we can't see are scary!" Which kind of early sci-fi do you want to read? A person can only take so much.
Also, most of these stories are presented as first-person-within-first-person, also known as "listen to this thing some guy told me!"
Wow! It took me a while, but I’ve finally finished this compilation. It was slow at first. Many of the authors I knew, but not these particular tales. The beginning of sci-if is not what I expected. They were dry, scientific and not very fantastical. As the genre grew and garnered a more popular pulp following the tales turn darker and more fantastic. It is brilliantly brought to a close with HP Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space”.
