“In honor of the tenth year of Solomon, son of David, the beloved of the Lord, king in Jerusalem, I have been commissioned to record the chronicles of those warriors known as the Mighty Men for you, great king. They were the men who came to your father in his hour of need. They were the men who fought with him. They were men, and that is the highest that can be written of them…”
Before he was the king of Israel, and before he slew the giant Goliath, David son of Jesse was a shepherd. In the hill country of Bethlehem, he will be tested in his first day of war, and will see for the first time how he can fight in the power of the covering.
A companion piece to the Lion of War series about the wars of King David, “David” is the second short story in the volumes of The Hall of the Mighty Men.
Narrated by Jehoshaphat, the historian of King Solomon, this collection of origin tales expands the Lion of War literary universe, and contains epic battles and feats of bravery unable to be included in the novels and upcoming movies.
Thrilling and passionate, The Hall of the Mighty Men is another chapter in the epic Lion of War series that fans will enjoy for years to come.
I enjoyed this short telling of David. This will be something I read again. I like how Cliff Graham expounds in fiction the possible backgrounds of these stories we know so well.
Another action packed story of God's mighty men! While personally going through a time of trial this short story has lifted my spirit. God promises to show us through our battles but it is usually not easy, it is often very hard. In David's early days as a boy he comes to know the covering of the Lord. After being annointed, David has felt a rush of heat overcome his body, but he does not yet know it is strength from Yahweh. On a hot day of sheparding his fathers sheep David is told by a mysterious warrior that he will be tested and will know battle all the days of his life and he will conquer in the name of Yahweh. David is amazed and afraid at the same time. In the covering of the shade David's flock is attacked by a bear and he must save his sheep, after all he is being tested. It is not an easy feat and now a lion is on the prowl ready for attack. After this there are two more attackers on the flock and David fights them to the death with the strength given to him by God but he losses one of his fathers sheep. The death of something you care for can fill you with defeat even after victory, especially when ones family does not believe your story. In the end David finds comfort knowing that the one he is to please is the Lord. David calls this strength given to him by God, the Covering.
A short story about the life of David, one of the greatest Kings of Israel.
I listened to this book on my way to the reservation. It helped me teach the Native American children, giving them a story of a great boy, turned man. I was able to visualize David tending sheep and protecting them from fierce animals. And then going up against a huge bully.
Cliff is a great writer and I give this book five stars.
Graham has created something very special! Historically accurate and tastefully embellished! These short stories add to the novels. It is just sad to see the marketing greed involved in the organization of these offerings.
