There is some good writing out there - some interesting characters too.
My second GR Indugopan book and must say that I am quite impressed with his writing. On the whole, the stories themselves may feel unresolved and occasionally unsatisfactory, but they are so preposterous, unorthodox and fresh that you cannot help but be engrossed in them.
രാത്രിയിലൊരു സൈക്കിൾവാല is the second book in the Detective Prabhakaran series and comprises of 4 stories.
In ഇന്നു രാത്രി ആരെൻറെ ചോരയിൽ ആറാടും?, the prisoner Arun Dutt, who was nabbed by Prabhakaran earlier, puts forward an unusual request. The last time Arun was at his house (during his parole), he had witnessed some strange events that scared him. He wants Prabhakaran to find out more about it. Prabhakaran agrees to stay at Arun's house for three days and during the course of this stay figures out the mystery. It's the classic haunting house story, with a twist. Although the mystery itself is not very exciting, the fate of the characters, especially Aswathy, about whom Prabhakaran says
Prabhakaran attempts to find the story behind a mute person, who has been stabbed with a surgical knife. Using an അക്ഷരമാല, Prabhakaran is able to communicate with the person. To find the person responsible for stabbing, the mute person is let loose, but he gets killed. Prabhakaran gets involved again and in the process, unravels a mystery involving an obsessive lover who had conjured up an accident to kidnap and imprison his lover. I would say this work is the second best in the list.
ഒരു പ്രേതബാധിതൻറെ ആത്മകഥ is a strange story. It starts off with the runaway lovers wanting to reunite with their family trope, but then the story takes a weird turn involving supernatural forces. Hari seeks the help of a marmani saami to help them unite with their family and goes on a trip with him to Thengappattanam and Kulachil , where he encounters the wrath of ghosts who want to inflict revenge on Marthanda Varma and his troops. An interesting story, but the narrative felt disconnected.
For me, the best of the lot is the story രാത്രിയിലൊരു സൈക്കിൾവാല. The people of Poovar have come to the police station complaining that big holes have started appearing in their beach, along with a couple of skeletons. In a seemingly unrelated event, a woman comes to the police station along with a letter from her husband stating that she needs the police assistance to find her missing husband. She is directed to Prabhakaran, who undertakes the task and goes in search of the husband in Pokhran. These two stories ultimately get connected in a final reveal that reminded me of the Dennis Lehane short story 'Until Gwen'.
my first expereience with the literary style of Indugopan G R was when i read about maniyanpilla in a popular weekly during my childhood . it must be mentioned that the style is entirely diffeent when it comes to novells of indugopan its the second book in the " prabhakaran series " by him , and the book deals with for scenerios in which the observation skill and investigative brain of prabhakaran is used the book is written in such a manner that , the rreaders can feel the " fear " through his sentences . and im eagerly waiting to comeplete the other two parts in the series
This is the second book in the Detective Prabhakaran series.Though the stories are petty, even outright silly,Prabhakaran is slowly growing in stature. How I wish Indugopan had churn out better stories to back his interesting protoganist.
