Desperate for funds to save the crumbling family estate, Devon Langley, earl of Northrup, has no choice but to make the “devil’s own bargain”. In exchange for 100,000 pounds, he agrees to wed cloth merchant Merton Beaumont’s only daughter.
Caroline Beaumont is appalled to discover her father has all but sold her into marriage to the forbidding earl. Yet realizing her doting father desires a noble grandson above all else, she decides to make the best of things. She also finds herself intrigued by her darkly handsome, mysterious husband.
Devon discovers his new wife isn’t the crude, ill-mannered little “cit” he anticipated. Indeed, he soon finds himself falling for her ethereal blond beauty, even as her genuineness and warmth begin to heal his wounded heart. But the diabolical plot of a madman threatens to shatter their tenuous bond and destroy all their hopes for love and happiness.

I write romance novels set in the dark ages, medieval and English Regency time periods and fantasy and historical novels with Celtic influences. My books have been published in Russia, China, the Netherlands and Germany. I was raised in the Midwest but I’ve lived in Wyoming for over thirty years. I work at a public library where I have the enviable job of ordering adult fiction. I’m married and have two grown children, When not working or writing, I enjoy gardening, traveling and reading, of course!
The story started out really well. A somewhat forced marriage that turns into affection. The story was going fine until there was what I call a TSTL moment on the hero's part. Near the end, there was another TSTL moment where the hero and heroine promise each other they will not do something and then so easily do exactly that.
I really enjoy when the author writes the leading lady as a strong willed woman with the means of taking care of herself and those she cares about. This was a good historical romance with a murder mystery to solve. It was written well and I'm so happy to have found it. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Decent book. I don't often like books set in old London times, but the characters in this book were good and there was a great combination of a love story and thriller (murder, kidnapping).
