Sam Archer #2

The Getaway

Rate this book
New York City. Summer.

A series of violent and highly successful bank robberies have been carried out across the city, all by the same five-man team. Millions of dollars have been stolen. The thieves are slick, efficient, well-organised and vicious. The FBI are getting nowhere in tracking them down. With pressure from Washington mounting and the heists continuing, the Feds desperately search for any leads.

They need results and they need them fast.

Across the city, Sam Archer is in town for a funeral. At the service, he is approached by an old family friend who works out of the FBI’s New York Office. He’s leading the case against the thieves and has a proposition for Archer. He needs the English counter-terrorist cop to go undercover, and try to get inside their circle. Make contact and gain their trust. Find out the secrets of their success. Given his English accent and his cover story, it’s a solid plan. They’ll never connect him to the FBI. Nevertheless, Archer is ready to refuse, but his old acquaintance tells him something else, a shocking revelation that ties Archer to this case personally. It’s all the convincing he needs.

He agrees to the plan, and goes undercover.

As he establishes contact with the crew and gets deeper and deeper, Archer learns they’re planning to leave the city for good in just a matter of days, but only after performing two final spectacular heists. In a race against time, Archer is forced to think of his feet or be killed as he gets caught up in the lethal crossfire between the thieves and law enforcement, none of whom know who he really is. As the clock ticks towards the thieves’ departure and as the stakes get higher and higher, Archer must both find a murderer and prevent two of the biggest heists in the history of New York City.

Before the thieves make their final getaway.

Thissaway!

To get away you must travel thissaway. Stay away from the trouble makers and the hostile people who are trying to get you to run away with them. Don’t you do it. Just because you know that you shouldn’t. Just focus on finding yourself a good way to get away. Nuff said.

Now onto the gist of the story:

Sam Archer is my kind of hero. He doesn’t mince words or waste any time taking out the bad guys. He knows what he’s going to do way before he does it.

He’s already doing his best to make sure that he gets the right people when he’s dishing out punishment. I hope he can keep it up and keep fighting because he’s been doing this since back in the day.

And now it’s time for me to read another book from this series. It’s a great book for reading, for anyone who is curious about the subject matter and the premise of the book.

If you like a fast paced thriller full of action, then this is the right book for you.

Five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Across the city, Sam Archer is in town for a funeral. At the service, he is approached by an old family friend who works out of the FBI's New York Office. He is leading the case against the thieves, and has a proposition for Archer. The pace is slow to begin with, but it soon picks up. This is an action packed police procedural thriller. The characters are well-developed, the book is well-written. The first half of the book is mostly setting the scene for the second half, but stick with it, the second half is well worth waiting for.

Sam Archer Takes on New York's Criminals

This is a wild adventure from England to New York as Sam Archer, a member of an elite police team, finds out his father has been murdered in the USA. Of course Sam would like to find out what happened, and as he arrives in New York an old friend of his Dad, Gerry, makes contact.
The action is fast with some great characters, the story pulls you in quickly and you are really interested in all the stories shifting throughout.
I totally enjoy this author's writing and definitely plan on continuing my read of this series!

I love bank robbery stories with clever ways around obstacles. The dialogue was clear. While the violence was well, violent, it wasn't coupled with vulgar speech, making it a nice combination. Highly recommended.

Exhilarating

Pages flying. Archer gets word that his estranged father was murdered. He Flys out to the funeral and gets swept up in a "bank robbers " case. Now he's stuck between the Feds and robbers, and needs a plan ( or 3), to stay alive . Riveting. I'm on to the next in the series!

Author Tom Barber's second Sam Archer book, "The Getaway" is truly a wild and wooley adventure through the streets of NYC. Sam Archer is a member of London's elite ARU unit. (As was in first book). Archer is informed his father had been murdered in NYC. Archer's father a one time NYC cop had been for the last 11 years working for the FBI. Somebody had coldly and callously put a bullet in the back of Archer's Father's head. Sam has 7 days to fly across the Atlantic to attend the funeral and get some rest. Right off the plane Archer meets up with one of his Father's best and oldest friends. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Todd Gerrard meets with Sam. Gerrad is leading up the NYC Federal bank robbery task force. It seems one crew is cleaning up. Gerrand wants Sam to find the gang, melt in and help take down these bad guys. The story explodes into high octane car chase action. Next there are several mind blowing twists just to rock the story line. The characters, especially the bad guys are defined and developed so well they all but come to life. Excellent dialog helped propel the book with it's action scenes into another gear. At times I felt like I was watch the 2 old movies: "Heat", & "The Town" That's a good thing. Helps to visualize such nasty characters as "Sean Farrell", or "Carmen Ortiz". This plot moves at 150 MPH from beginning to end, so you have to hold on tight for the twists and turns. A seat belt is highly recommended. If you haven't already caught on to Mr. Barber's Sam Archer series I urge you to do so ! Yes, 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars. After reading this I really must "Turtle" !

This is the second in a series involving the same fictional investigator, who's on assignment for an elite police squad in London when he learns that his father, a New York City detective, has been murdered. He is offered the chance to clandestinely go to that city and assist both the police and the FBI in solving a series of bank and armored car robberies by high-tech professionals. Turns out the gang is so good because they have a rat in the FBI special task force assigned to bring them down, who keeps them one step ahead of the law. Lots of twists and turns, plenty of violence and action. Quite a book, coming from a young chap born in Australia, raised in England, and schooled in classical theater. Easy page-turner.

My 2nd Sam Archer novel and I liked it. This time the story was all about Sam, as opposed to the 1st book in the series (Nine Lives)which featured Sam's team, and he had a middle size part in the story.

This one started slow but then got going in high gear with the action department. I will read the 3rd book in this series real soon (Blackout) especially since I found out it is available as a Kindle Unlimited book.

If you like police action thrillers you will like this one. I would suggest starting off with the first book so you can get to know Sam and his team.

This is a book of two halves, the first half was a bit monotonous and the second quite frenetic.
There was little to grab me early on and as a result I found it a bit of a struggle, I think this was partly because I didn’t really believe in the story. I had real problems with the idea that a group of hardened professional criminals would accept a new member into their team without knowing anything about them and having only met them for a few minutes. I find it even harder to believe that an experienced officer would believe that they had accepted him so easily. Also why wasn’t Sam insisting that he should have some backup? His role wasn’t official and he must have realised how easy it was for him to be ‘hung out to dry’.
I almost gave up about half way through, but fortunately things dramatically improved in the second half. Sam became a more interesting character, the story developed several twists and turns and Katic was a great addition, a pity we are unlikely to see her again.
After the first half of the book I would probably given 1 or 2 stars, but the second half was easily worth 4, overall I gave 3 stars but at least Sam has become a much more interesting character and I will try the next book in the series.

That was quite a heart thumping, adrenaline fueled ride full of double crosses and confusion over who to trust. Sam Archer gets the job done even though I didn’t think it was possible. This was an engaging and terrifying story that could easily be a fantastic movie. Well done!

The second in the Sam Archer series (a British investigator), this book has you guessing along with the characters in trying to figure out what's really going on. The first half of the book moves along fairly serenely in setting the stage for the second half... which literally explodes with action! I was content to read the first half in several installments, but couldn't put the book down for the second half, staying up well past midnight to finish it in one shot :)

It's like 24. The character is not as strong as Jack Bauer but it's still fun. If you like your reads fast with a little twist here and there then this is for you!

NYC. Chase Manhattan Bank (2nd Ave). the next armored truck had come/gone.
Mark (aka) watched from the cab.
Security guards: Walter Pick (55+, retired NYPD), & Peter Willis (55+, retired NYPD) were on duty.
NYPD 19th Precinct had arrived at the robbery in progress.
A hostage had been taken.
FBI SAC Todd “Gerry” Gerrard (50+, VCU), FBI SA Mina Katic (25+, single mom) later arrived at the taped off crime scene.
Sean Farrell (bank robbery leader), Carmen Ortiz (Dominican, Sean’s lover, cage fighter), & Regan had been killed.

Will Sam Archer (26, Armed Response Unit (ARU) & th4e others recover the money?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. It was just OK for me but I will still rate it at 5 stars.

I have now read both of the first two stories in the Sam Archer series. This story features Archer in more a solo outing than the first story, and covers more of his backstory, brought about because of the death of his father and Archer's traveling to attend the funeral. Given the opportunity by his father's former partner to capture those responsible for his death, Archer accepts the undercover assignment.
Archer is quickly involved with searching for a violently effective bank robbery crew, who most likely have a source in law enforcement aiding the heists. As the robbery amounts increase, Archer becomes less certain of who he can trust for help.
I agree with other reviewers that the second half of the book is frantically paced. The violence level also increases. I did find the scheme of the bank robbers interesting, and was curious to find out how far they could actually go to complete their plan.
This was a fun, action packed read. I will likely read more in this series.

Sam's on the run and out for vengeance!

Sam Archer returns to New York after his estranged father is murdered. Soon after an old friend and FBI colleague of his Dad approaches him and asks for his help. He wants him to bring down a team of robbers responsible for several high profile bank heists as well as his Dad's death. Sam agrees to go undercover and finds himself caught in the crossfire between the FBI, NYPD and the gang. Betrayed at every turn, there seems to be only one person he can rely on. Himself. With his back against the wall Archer will have to pull out all the tricks in his arsenal to survive to return home to the ARU. A brilliant second book full of action and more twists and turns then a corkscrew. Thoroughly recommended to all adrenaline junkies.

“The Getaway” is the excellent Book 2 ‘bank heist’ novel focused on protagonist Sam Archer, an ARU agent in North London, who pairs up with the FBI after a traumatic event in his life, the death of his father, and lands in the middle of an FBI mess in New York City. Full of twists and turns, with memorable characters and sufficient detail to enhance the plot, the novel is also a NYC travelougue of well-known Big Apple locations. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, up comes another twist and then another to boot. Highly Recommended. Five FAST-PACED Stars! Kindle, 331 pages. Recommended to me by BookBub.

This one was hard to rate because the second half is far superior to the first half. There were several things in the beginning that I found hard to believe. A cop from the UK ends up "helping out" the NYCPD and doesn't have to get any kind of blessing or permission from his superiors? A group of hardened criminals readily accepts some young kid into their team at spur of the moment (and of course divulges information about future plans)? So while these may be possible it just took me out of the story. But things pick up in the second half and it was an enjoyable read.

The curse of the second book

If this has been a stand alone book it would have been ok. However the character of Sam was never developed enough in the first book to have him moved to an entire different place with all new characters. Plus there are several inconsistencies in the character. Supposedly he hadn't seem his father since he was 12 and before then they had visited New York during his childhood but from those trips he knew how to drive around the city on the team schedules. Yeah weak

I'm a fan of Barber's, yet even the best of stories drift a tad far from reality at times. There is more than sufficient evidence to put the bank robbers away long before the end of the story. Some of it was pretty glaringly obvious. But then, that would have made it a novella and I would have been disappointed by the shortness of the story. And then there was a whole lot more going on than simple robbery. Clean editing for a British author. A very enjoyable, fast paced, action thriller. I'm reading these out of sequence, but they're still great reading.

I enjoyed the book and the main character, Sam Archer. Tom Barber has potential. There are some things that need addressing. (I'm a stickler for detail). Cordite is not found in present-day propellants. It was phased out at the end of World War II. There is no real name for the smell other than nitroglycerin, which gives it an acrid odor.
Since the story is based in the US, words like holdall, petrol, tyres and kerb should have been day pack, gas, tires and curb respectively.
The story has enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.

Wow!! What a book!!

After reading the first book in the series, I decided to continue reading the series. Well, I wasn't disappointed. This book was action packed from beginning to end. The one that I enjoyed the most was the setting that this book took place in. Since I live in New York, I knew pretty much exactly where all the landmarks in the book were located. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

Another great read from Tom Barber

This is the second book from Tom Barber following Nine Lives and it does not disappoint.
The storyline is good as is the research into it. There is loads of energy and excitement running throughout the whole story which is quite different from Nine Lives. This coming across more in the style of a Jack Reacher type tale but nonetheless it extremely satisfying.

Number 2 in the Sam Archer series
Archer's father is murdered in the USA. Archer goes to the funeral, but stays to find the murderer or murders. His FBI contact gets him started and he is soon the getaway driver for bank robbers.
It gets complicated very fast as the FBI appears to have a traitor in the ranks, providing support for the bank robbers. The big question is, who murdered his father; the FBI traitors or the bank robbers?

Interesting Combo

This author has provided one of the most interesting mash-ups I've recently encountered. The book involves two of the most interesting cities, London and New York, vicious villains, and twists and turns aplenty, only one of which I thought went too far. I am off to read book one, hoping that reading out of sequence will not spoil anything.

GREAT WRITING

There is something about reading a extremely well written story, it just makes you smile and sigh, ooh my. This book does just that! Both book one and two could stand along, each story leaves you wanting to read more of Sam Archer adventures. Great story with a great ending. How satisfying.

Good detail information of how a perfect timed bank robbery could take place. A hostage was taken..Sam’s estranged father is murdered in New York.and he has come for the funeral. A rash of robberies and NYPD can’t figure them out, They ask Sam to stay and help and work on his dad’s murder also. Good twists and turns once again a compelling story.

This is a riveting story that keeps you reading. The characters are well-developed, and readers don't see the next turn coming. There were a couple of slip-ups, but they stayed within the interesting plotline. After reading this book, I could travel to NYC because of the details about the city.

The author's handling of the solution surprised me. Bravo! I look forward to the next book in the series. Overall score = 4.5 stars.

Sam Archer, is an interesting character. He is a totally professional, but the twist and turns of the story make for a good read. Especially when he finds out that a old trusted friend, was not the man he thought he was, turning into a sour dissatisfied so called friend, who has turned into money grabbing person, and suckered Sam totally.
All in all a very good read, and great author.
