When research biologist Jane Marcus watches a speeding car sail off the highway and into a wheat field, she rushes to the scene to provide first aid to the driver. The man is seriously injured, but he uses his last moments of consciousness to beg Jane to relay a message to someone named Andy. To soothe the man, Jane promises to give Andy his message, even though the message makes no sense to her, and she has no idea how to find Andy.
After the mysterious stranger dies two weeks later, Jane finds herself at the center of a plot so sinister that she doesn't comprehend its scope until all the pieces of the puzzle finally fit into place. The driver's cryptic message and other clues he left behind lead Jane to a remote hunting camp on the Alaska Peninsula where Jane finds powerful men with a diabolical plan that will effect the highest level of government.
Jane is out of her element in the Alaskan wilderness. Not only must she escape a group of men who will not hesitate to kill her to protect their secret, but she must navigate a hostile environment and wild animals to survive.

Jane Marcus is a biologist working in Tucson, Arizona, but she’s home in rural Kansas to help care for her mother, who is dying of cancer. When her mother dies, she stays to help her dad in his adjustment. One day, Jane is practically run off the road and the car that nearly caused her to lose control loses control itself, and crashes. Jane is first on the scene and helps stabilize the man while she waits for the EMTs and the sheriff. The man comes to long enough to pass on a cryptic message and to implore Jane not to tell anyone what he said except for whom the message is intended. This sets off a series of events that leads Jane to Kodiak Island, Alaska, a hunting expedition for which she is definitely not prepared, and a world of danger. Through is all, Jane is searching first, for the person to pass on the message, and second, a way to get home in one piece.
What great characters Robin Barfield has created! Since moving to the U.S. Northwest, I have discovered a desire to see Alaska, and Barfield’s book has stoked the fire. Now I not only want to see Alaska, but Kodiak Island and the Alaskan wilderness, which are characters in the book as much as Jane. There are so many red herrings in the mystery I was surprised each time I was wrong as to who to boo, and the action is fast-paced. The flow is good, the characters are fully developed…there isn’t anything bad to say about the book! If you like mysteries, you won’t regret reading Barfield’s Big Game.
An exciting book that took me into the wilds of Alaska and areas that I have only dreamed of visiting before. It kept me on the edge of my seat with many unexpected twists and turns. I highly recommend it.
Alaska-rough and untamed. Robin Barefield weaves a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Once you start reading, you won’t stop until you know what happens and how it ends.
Jane Marcus is a fisheries biologist who has been working in the genetics field. She is in Kansas, out for a drive and trying to forget her grief over her mother's painful death. When a car goes off the road in front of her, she heads to the wreck site to see if she can help - and ends up entangled in a deadly plot that goes into the highest levels of government.
I'm not usually one to like political thrillers but this story had quite enough twists and turns to keep me engaged. It felt very current since the presidential debates were on my television in real life as I read the book and the story takes place prior to a presidential election.
Part of this book takes place in the Lower 48 but, to me at least, the most interesting part of the book took place in Alaska.
Politics, big game hunting, bad guys, more bad guys, a convoluted storyline, scary airplane flights - all come together in a fast moving thriller that changes directions frequently but with all the threads coming together for a satisfying ending.
Five stars. What a great book. I was on pins and needles all the way thru this book. There were so many twists and turns, I didn't know who to believe. Go ahead read it you will love it.
