As a princess in exile who’s been raised in England, Lady Lily Bancroft has no desire to wed the king of Bororavia or be whisked away to a foreign country. But she’s being held in their embassy and has no choice in her fate, at least not until she meets a daring thief and English spy, Kit Fox MacLeod. She’d much rather spend time in Kit’s arms than in navigating political turmoil. Can she convince the charming rogue to help her escape? A classical historical romance with a delightful couple.

So Christopher "Kit" Fox MacLeod, who we meet in the first book of this series, is a thief and a former gutter rat who was adopted into the family. But he's never quite felt good enough. So when he sets his sights on a princess, he at first does so casually, with a mind toward seduction. But the longer he gets to know Princess Lily of Bororavia, he realizes that she is not who she appears to be and that she seems to be in rather a bit of danger hanging out with the King and his court. Eventually, circumstances force him to rescue her and they find they are perfect for one another. But both the British and Bororavian governments want Lily back and they insist she be their queen despite her vehement refusals. But if they have their way, she cannot be with Kit.

This was kind of like Roman Holiday with a HEA. Only the characters are in the UK. Kit does come around to realizing he loves Lily pretty quickly. He may still be spying and thieving from her government, but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to protect her. And so I liked him quite a bit. The angst here doesn't come from Kit being a thief or a seducer of women (he is), but from the external forces that want to force Lily to become a queen when she doesn't want to. Even down to characters I wouldn't have expected it from - like Aunt Phoebe, Martin Kestrel and even Kit's father. They all seem determined to force Lily to marry the King and become a queen when she's explicitly stated she doesn't want it. Now, many of them appeal to her sympathies for the Boravian people, which when I considered it, I did think maybe Lily was being selfish, but I couldn't blame her. But the people who are doing the convincing honestly only care about the interests of the British empire and those are the reasons they try to force her. I was frustrated for Lily and absolutely disgusted that these people I had admired and considered to be honorable people (namely Martin and Court) would so easily force a woman like this and possibly ruin the happiness of Kit (Court's son!). So Kudos to the author for making me seethe and rage and actually feel the emotion, but I wish she hadn't done so at the expense of my respect for those other characters. I also wish she'd given me a glimpse into their response at how things ended up. That being said, I loved Uncle Andrew and very much want to read his story next :-)

Bororavian princess Lily Bancroft asks adventurer Kit Fox to "rob her of her innocence" for political and naturally they then fall in love... I reviewed this for BOMC pre-publication.
