Curly-haired, bespectacled, Dr. Akhil can replace your hip without a sweat, but he is a rambling, fidgeting fool outside the operation room—an absolute klutz—the worst qualifications to have for a man in search of love. However, one can overcome any obstacle with a bit of planning. Right?
Plan A is simple. Unfortunately, the heart-to-heart blows up in shouting hysterics, tears, and abandonment. Worry not. Time for Plan B.
A year in London, and Plan B goes belly up. Thanks to a reality dating show. Anyway, who cares. Akhil has his plant babies, Priyamvada, Ms. Fancy Pants, and Zami. They are not traitors like the stars that Akhil loves to gaze at night. The twinklers conspire to bring the dark enemy back into his orbit.
Nope, not happening. Akhil has a plan. This time a three-letter one. Plan KDA- Keep Dan Away. But it is not easy blocking "the player" hell-bent on dribbling his way past Akhil's defences one accident at a time- ready to score. Add the nosy Keely matriarch and her two sidekick clowns to flying forks, tripping legs, and an accomplished kiss coach; our Akhil is in deep trouble.
What a delightful book. This was a truly sweet and beautiful jock and nerd story. Dan and Akhil fight each other all the way to their HEA in the most delightful and entertaining way. I loved the whole family getting involved in helping them find each other. I found myself smiling through out the entire book.
Ashish Rastogi is a new author for me, but I’ve already decided I’m checking out his other books.
This is an adorable tale of how Akhil met his soulmate while participating in a reality TV show. He is a doctor who is a little shy about his sexual orientation.
The premise was lighthearted which went sour due to Dan's bravado. He rescued the situation expertly after realizing his mistake. And what can I say about Dan! A lot apparently, but I will keep it simple. He is a celebrity sports personality that is no stranger to the limelight.
I loved the dual POV which gave the perspective of both Dan and Akhil. It is an easy read with a barrage of emotions. I read an adult MM romance for the first time with this one, and I was so pleasantly taken aback.
Author Ashish has done an excellent job of weaving a cute story that will make you smile, laugh, sad, and happy. It has steam in the right amount. The plotline has a great feel to it, engaging the readers with honest simplicity. The author's palatable writing style is the highlight of this book. I found myself immersed and flowing along the pages without being distracted.
Review : The story starts with Akhil who is a doctor and was set up for a dating TV show by his best friend. There, he met his celebrity crush, Daniel Keely, one of the famous football players in the Premier League, in this show. They both hit it off fine and there was an instant attraction between them. But suddenly at the very end of their date, Daniel becomes hostile to Akhil and they bitterly parted ways. And all through the book we see how they met again and again and how their life intertwines with each other.
I enjoyed the book. The story is told from both Dan's and Akhil's pov, so we get to see both of their sides, their stories.
Even though they are opposite of each other from character to status, they are somehow similar, and their struggles are quite similar as well. Both of them are suffering somehow because of their queer identity, and while Dan is trying to get acknowledgment from his father, Akhil is trying from his whole family. Also, deep down they both want the same things love, trust, respect, and family.
As they keep meeting each other their interactions make an amazing stranger to haters to lovers romantic comedy. The story covers a long period with the consequences of their meetings and how that changes them. There are emotional, spicy, intense attraction scenes as much as there are fun, humor, and chaotic scenes. And the ending is a perfect and sweet and swoon-worthy happily ever after.
But my favorite scene from the book is when they meet again 2 years after their most disastrous interaction ever which makes headlines and makes Akhil hate Dan more. But the moment they meet, their attraction towards each other is still the same even amidst the emotional situation, and family members to this and you'll get a hilarious, sweet one. I love how Elliot, Dan's brother, and his mother keep poking him about Akhil and how Akhil keeps trying to hate Dan.
I love the scene as it shows the family dynamics of Dan, how they accept Dan's identity, and how they understand him and encourage him to consider his attraction towards Akhil. And how they instantly make Akhil ease and appreciate his professionalism. And most importantly from this onwards the story picks up its pace and takes us on a rollercoaster romance ride with these two dorks.
So the book is an enjoyable, well-written Queer Romance, I would highly recommend it.
The 5-Day Plan is a contemporary MM romance between an Indian doctor and a British footballer. Outside of his profession as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Akhil is a nerdy and klutzy virgin who ran away from India to England after coming out and being rejected by his family. A friend convinces him to go on a reality dating show where he somehow gets a blind date with his ultimate crush—the man-whorish footballer Dan Keely, the only out gay player in the premier league looking to improve his image. Sparks fly but everything goes wrong, leading to three very public and disastrous interactions that become internet fodder. Now three years later, life brings them together again for five days, but will Akhil be able to protect his heart when Dan finally wants him back this time around?
This was actually a very cute and light-hearted story that took awhile for me to get into. There was just a strange, almost off-putting quality to the writing that really bothered me. The grammar just came across very formal and proper with some dated-to-downright-misused figures of speech and expressions (it makes me think that English may not be the author’s first language) while also having a very juvenile impression to the actual content. It also is in need of more contractions, which may account for some of the formalness of the text (maybe because the author is a doctor and more familiar with formal writing style). I think an editor would really help with this.
Looking past that one issue (which I had to just bear and get used to), the book delivers a delightful and funny story of waiting for love at the right time. Akhil is a man looking for acceptance after being rejected by his family back in India, but he is slowly putting himself out there (at a reality show was a bit over the top and unrealistic though). His Indian heritage does not come off positively though, and I wish the author dug a little deeper to allow for some more positive aspects to counterbalance. Meanwhile, Idrian is a man in his prime who still afraid of his feelings and unready to settle down so he drives Akhil away. With time, both men grow and mature until they are able to try again (to some cute and very hilarious situations).
The 5-Day Plan is a cute nerd/jock, interracial MM romance.
*I read this book as a judge for the 2nd Indie Ink Awards. My review here will not necessarily reflect my score there.
"The 5-Day Plan" by Ashish Rastogi is a Gay rom-com that takes us through the journey of the two protagonists - Dr. Akhil, who is an orthopedic by profession and Daniel Keely, a.k.a. Dan, who is a soccer player.
The story is set in England, where they met at a dating show; Dr. Akhil couldn't believe that he had been paired with his on-screen favorite soccer star on a blind date. Following this they immediately fell in love and had lots of fun, happiness, laughter, and a lot more.
Akhil is portrayed as a humble, shy gentleman whereas Dan is the handsome bold one in their relationship. Their chemistry is well portrayed by the author. Among all the scenes described, their first meeting felt most personal. I love reading romantic novels and the scene where Akhil calls his friend Jessica a.k.a Jess and tells her how Dan is much hotter in person and how scared and confused he was as he met his celebrity crush. Jess then motivates him to have the courage and go talk to Dan, the same way she met her boyfriend on a blind date. The scene was so cute!
Also, I loved how the author slowly penned the growing chemistry between Dan and Akhil. From the scene where they met, Akhil was speechless every time he saw Dan. In the 4th Chapter, 'Crashing the Date' - Dan had Akhil hooked! They shared their dreams and problems. They shared romantic moments which I loved reading. Their eyes met now and then, and their fingers touched each other, little romantic gestures I adored reading throughout the book. I was delighted as I read the chapter.
But with a single turn of events, a little accident, problems arose between them. But fate has its plans. Akhil finds Dan's brother, Alex is being admitted to his hospital, which then leads Akhil and Jess to create the 5-DAY PLAN!!
The author penned relatable characters and a fast-paced storyline. This is my first time reading a gay novel and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's one of the best rom-coms I've read recently and I would love to suggest it to anyone who's searching for one.
This was a surprising and delightful little gem of a read. Premise of the book is Dr. Akhil left his native India under a cloud of family disappointment and societal expectations. His family has disowned him for being gay while still haranguing him to come home and marry a proper Indian girl. Dr. Akhil dreams of finding a man he can date and call his boyfriend, unfortunately, by his own admission, his social dating skills are non-existent. At the urging of his best friend, he signs up for an online dating show. It does not go well.
Dan is a London football (the soccer variety) star, well-known in the tabloids for his attention-getting exploits on and off the field. Dan is paired with Dr. Akhil for the disastrous dinner date. While the chemistry is obvious, Dan isn’t ready to do or be more than the sports playboy he is. But Fate is fickle, and when Dr. Akhil is thrown in his path again, Dan is ready to be the boyfriend Dr. Akhil asked for. But Fate doesn’t make things easy for Dan, and he has a lot of apologizing to do, if he can get Dr. Akhil to listen.
This is a slow-burn romance that drew me in and had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. By slow-burn, I mean years. And I loved the story even more for that time span. So many male/male romances happen within a week, month or months, maybe a year and the characters click together like magnets. So few authors stretch the time frame farther, but this author did and it worked. It worked really well – it gave the characters time to grow emotionally and meaningfully and moved the story out of insta-love to something more emotionally connecting. I loved that.
The prose in this was delightful and had me smiling more than once - Dr. Akhil talking to his plants, snippets of social media posts, witty bantering and snappy dialog between the two main characters and sub-characters added to the overall enjoyment.
If I had to quibble, Dan’s family was a tich over the top in the matchmaking department, but it’s a super small quibble. They were definitely a positive contrast for acceptance, openness, and “family” against the backdrop of Dr. Akhil’s situation. For all their fame and quirkiness, there were sweet hidden depths to Dan’s family.
As I noted above, there is no insta-love here, there is no sudden “All is forgiven!” resolution and fall passionately into each other’s arms. There are some issues that both men need to work through, some emotional growing that had to take place, and a good kick in the proverbial nether regions to make the characters realize what was in front of them was a really good thing.
Recommended if you like a slow, sweet romance that focuses on an emotional connection under the guise of witty banter. This is perfect reading for a blustery fall day, a soft couch, and a hot cuppa.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
"Even if Dan's apology is genuine, he is out of my league. I am the homely kind, while he is a flamboyant stud. He is fire, and I, a kindling. Parched from years of want. My heart can't bear another shock. Not from Dan, at least."
"The 5 Day Plan" unfolds the tale of Dr. Ashish Rastogi. Daniel Keely, a renowned soccer star. Their serendipitous meeting on a dating show sparks an instant connection. However, the narrative takes a twist when Dan's brother is admitted to Akhil's hospital.
In a scene from the book, Akhil opens up to Jess about his genuine feelings for Dan, intertwining a complex web of emotions. Despite his deep affection, the lingering wounds from Dan's past actions three years ago remain etched in Akhil's memory. Aware that he will have to deal with Dan for five more days due to his brother Alex's diagnosis, Akhil and Jess craft a strategic five-day plan to maintain a careful distance from Dan, navigating the delicate balance of emotions and past hurts. I liked this scene as it unfolds the deep feelings of Akhil; with which I find myself connected and it touched my heart.
In my opinion, the story is very light and refreshing. It's an emotional roller coaster that kept me hooked until the end. The simple language and well-developed characters are another plus point of the book. The internal struggles of the characters are well portrayed by the author. The message given by the author is very clear: love has its language; it doesn't restrict itself to any gender. It's a connection between two souls who are attached at heart. Sooner or later, they will surely reach their destination.
Akhil and Dan’s story is charming and heartwarming and relatable– it takes an interesting premise: a dating show, two different personalities who mesh really well– and layers in some truly likable characters who feel distinctly real, with strengths and weaknesses and room (and willingness) to grow. No one is perfect: there are mistakes and awkward moments as well as really lovely and moving ones. There’s romance and drama and humor, and the storyline flows well. It’s engrossing from start to finish– I was sad to get to the last page, but happy to have been along for the ride. Well worth checking out.

This is my first book of LGBTQ rom-com and I preferred to read it only for the fascinating title "The 5 Day Plan" by Ashish Rastogi and for the charming book cover which raises my curiosity to step into the story. It was a delightful book that made me enjoy, intrigue, laugh, immerse, smile, and think from different perspectives to learn acceptance and tolerance in reality. It was mainly drawn skillfully for the gay romantic comedy-drama. This dramatic humorous romantic story will produce warmth in every reader's heart.
Dan and Akhil, who are the two main protagonists, made an appealing combination of humor and romance with a touch of serendipity. It gives a refreshing plot to discover themselves. Dan's familiar name and Akhil's clumsiness are two extremely opposite characters that indulge each other making an interesting plot and how they both can manage one or the other is quite engaging.
The author consciously develops both the characters wisely and narrates the story skillfully by blending the drama with humor and romance. The author's writing style effortlessly drives the readers into their lives.
Dan and Akhil, both are connected in a deeper level of sense. Dan's struggle to maintain his image in the world and his career adds a layer of complexity to the character whereas Akhil's endearing awkward behavior and innocence add grace. The bond between them is tangible. Their wordplay and interactions are joyous. A few more conversations or perceptions can be entertained to have interacted with Akhil's parents so that they might have been filled with the explorations of LGBTQ.
"The night is beautiful'' which is a statement that took place in the chapter of a date night made me enjoy the read joyfully. It was fantastically written by the author as it describes the beautiful night along with the romantic scene. "Nothing compares to the man by my side" - the extraordinary view and the chain of words were made beautifully inch by inch to describe that night. The description of the night under the sky, the ambiance, the conversations about the stars and the galaxy, the body language of both of them and the expressions are marvelous.
“The universe is no competition to Dan. Who wants to gaze at the sky when my brightest star is beside me?” The author excellently weaved the romance with bewitching words. This chapter is the core of the book and I enjoyed the way that the author made it entertaining, fun-filled, romantic, and alluring.
The author creates a slow romance with a perfect pace, allowing their relationship to develop on its own throughout the story. Their journey which is filled with hilarious misinterpretations, tender moments, and heartfelt revelations makes a genuinely satisfying reading experience.
"The 5 Day Plan" is a captivating drama that will leave readers fully entertained and uplifting. I would recommend it to those new readers who wish to read a different and unique genre.
Through an engaging and captivating story, the author has kept you hooked to the narrative while giving out some important facts about life as well.
It's about the story of two people who have quite different personalities and who are quite doubtful about taking their relationship forward. Their chance encounter are growing quite frequent indicating that they might have found their love. But, are they willing to take this chance?
This is the story of Dr. Akhil and Daniel who is a famous football player. Since they are gay, there's a lot of pressure on them to get a positive response from their families. They keep meeting each other and Akhil has also devised some plans to keep himself away from Daniel. Would he be able to resist himself from this handsome young man? Read this book to find out if he can follow his plans or not.
There is one fight scene in the book where you see a different side of Dan when he apologizes for his rude behavior. You get to know that everything that he was doing all along was to protect his counterpart. This fight makes them understand how strong their bond is and you will find the scene heartwarming.
This is a fun and exciting read. Reading about Akhil and Daniel's story was such a pleasant and joyful ride. From their first meeting to the end, everything is described in such a beautiful way. While reading the book, you can make out the feelings of both the characters towards each other. The way they resist each other only to get closer is something that will be heartwarming for the readers to read. The most important aspect of the book is the beautiful message that we should accept ourselves for what we are and not deviate from our path and sacrifice our happiness due to societal expectations. It is a beautifully crafted novel with a strikingly impressive writing style. The connection that both the characters share will make you feel that you share the same connection with your loved one as well. Readers interested in this genre should check it out.
The 5-day plan by Ashish Rastogi is a wonderful book that follows the story of Dr. Akhil and his not-so-active dating life. Akhil is a great doctor but when it comes to dating, let's just say it's not his forte. Akhil navigates a labyrinth of mishaps, eccentric characters, and his insecurities in a quest for love. The narrative, penned with vivid and evocative prose, paints a portrait of Akhil, a surgical maestro who stumbles in the dance of love outside the operating theater. The author skillfully crafts a narrative depicting Akhil's growth from an awkward, uncertain romantic to a person who ingeniously devises intricate strategies to protect his heart. I loved the whole book but my utmost favorite scene from the book was when Akhil met Dan for the very first time. And how they met is something you'll find out while reading but I think it was a match made in heaven. Akhil, a reverent, self-aware individual, contrasted with the charmingly flirtatious and self-assured Daniel Keely. Akhil's stunned reaction upon seeing Daniel was fascinating, while Daniel's charm seemed as though it were crafted by the gods themselves. The contrast between Dan's charisma and Akhil's awkwardness was both humorous and relatable. I mean, who wouldn't be taken aback when faced with the presence of such a handsome and renowned individual as their date? The novel's charm lies in its ability to blend heartwarming moments with uproarious chaos, inviting readers to root for Akhil amidst the mishaps and fiascos. The interplay of emotions, from the highs of budding affection to the lows of shattered expectations, resonates with authenticity, allowing readers to empathize with Akhil's journey to find love amid the comedic turmoil. This book, featuring a charming main character, a lively group of characters, and a series of ups and downs, beautifully showcases love's unpredictability and the strength within us to endure. Do give it a try
A celebration of love, friendship and self acceptance.

The 5 Day Plan by Ashish Rastogi is a heartwarming and an exhilarating gay love story between Akhil, an Indian orthopedic, and Dan, a british soccer star whose fates begin conspiring from the very beginning itself.
In this sensational and sizzling love story, we, readers have a lot to learn and imbibe about love and life as Akhil and Dan's first meeting together at a dating show and then the way their relationship evolves overtime through an exhilarating ride of laughter, romance, and self-discovery is something beautiful and absorbing for the readers.
Akhil and Dan's coming together becomes no less a life changing coincidence as a shy and introvert Akhil on one side and a person of dexterity and very dashing, Dan on the other side hardly appears as a match together. They and their upbringings are as different as milk and lemon yet their yearning in love brings them together which they even willingly couldn't avoid.
The way the author has sketched these two characters and their relations is organically surreal which manifest itself into an unpredictable story of love, friendship and self acceptance. All the more, every reader will be engrossed in the love equations of these two character alike. The storytelling is humourously riveting that it will keep you hooked and excited to know what actually happens further in the lives of these characters.
The story isn't simple at all as it seems as there are several intriguing phases in the story which conspicuously shows the ups and downs in a relationship especially when such an unconventional love story comes across the societal pre-established parochial norms. Overall, a fantastic read if it's been long since you red any interesting story. Go for this one. No doubt, this story leaves an indelibly emotional imprints in the heart and hence, simply unforgettable and unputdownable.

This book is a great representation of how it’s still a taboo but it’s not all about it being a taboo but a beautiful love story with lovely heart warming romance, a rom com that has my heart for sure!
I live for the humour the book has, especially I liked Akhil more than anyone because I could naturally relate with their mindset even though we’re not same but everyone I guess will relate, hehe!
The changing perspectives makes it a very fun and at the same time it adds depth to the story, like their thoughts are clearly expressed and the pace is also great not too fast or slow just perfect!
It’s a very easy breezy and a light read, has the element of relaxing in it, I mean it not a book that will fill you with tension or anxiety rather something you would look forward to after a tiring day!
It’s fun, hot, entertaining and really happening, I was just imagining what if it was set in India, I would have died laughing as this book made me laugh a lot of times than a book does!
Definitely an unique love story which is filled with craziness and that’s what exactly we call life, isn’t it?

There are some books that compel you to go till the last page once you start reading them. This was one such book. A beautiful amalgamation of humour, romance, and a bit of quirky drama, this book was a blast to read.
From the very first sequence where Akhil, one of the two protagonists, is getting ready for a dating show, you get an insight into how the character is going to shape up. A bit nerdy, a bit clumsy, a bit sentimental, and very good at heart. These trails are never lost throughout the length of the book and Akhil becomes more and more endearing as the story progresses. And then there's Dan, our second protagonist. He is a famous football star playing in the EPL and his love life is always up for much discussion and speculation, especially since he is an openly gay footballer. Dan is as vulnerable as he's strong, as emotional as ge is carefree. As loving as he is indifferent. Both the characters are so well defined that you never lose sight of them.
Ashish Rastogi manages to hold your attention for the entirety of the narrative and the flow is never broken, even in the middle phases where books usually tend to dip a little in pacing. The only thing that I'd have liked a little more explored is Akhil's relationship with his parents. Maybe a couple of more dialogue sequences could have helped in that regard. But apart from that, this was a fantastic read. Highly recommended.
The 5 Day Plan by Ashish Rastogi is an absolute gem of a book that beautifully blends the heartwarming elements of a romantic comedy with the complexities of LGBTQ+ relationships. From start to finish, I was completely captivated by the endearing journey of the two lead characters, Akhil and Dan. Akhil, a shy and reserved doctor, instantly won my heart with his relatable personality. Rastogi skillfully delved into the nuances of Akhil's emotions, allowing readers to truly understand his fears and insecurities. I found myself cheering him on, hoping that he would achieve the love of his life. Enter Dan, an ace footballer whose charisma and confidence bring a delightful dynamic to the story. The chemistry between Akhil and Dan is palpable, and their blossoming relationship is a joy to witness. Rastogi's writing captures the tender moments of their connection, as well as the skirmishes they keep on having with each other. What sets The 5 Day Plan apart is its blend of humor and heartfelt moments. The witty banter between Akhil and Dan had me laughing out loud, while the poignant scenes tugged at my heartstrings. Rastogi's writing style is engaging and infused with emotion, making it impossible to put the book down.
In conclusion, The 5 Day Plan is a delightful, poignant, and entertaining gay romcom that tackles important themes of self-discovery, acceptance, and love. Ashish Rastogi's storytelling prowess shines through, and I eagerly await more from him.
Curly haired soft spoken Akhil is a successful doctor in a hospital in London. His gay identity was not accepted by his Indian so-called sanskari family. So he ran away from India to London in search of a peaceful life with his identity. Everything was fine unless he met a hot football player Dan in a matchmaking reality show. Akhil is sweet, professional and a devotee of Hanuman who according to him shows him the path in his restless moment. But nothing worked when he met Dan as Dan is his crush whose poster he keeps in his room. Long story short he did some unusual things out of nervousness and humiliated himself in a show. It took a long time to buckle up for Akhil but things don't happen according to our plan. He met Dan again after a few years in his own hospital in different circumstances and a lot of bizarre things started happening again.
This is a queer comedy romance by Asish Rastogi. The story has a lot of twists and turns. Although the book is based in the UK, one of the protagonists is an Indian. So his struggle and his identity crisis is very Indian. The author very beautifully presented Akhil's inner struggle as a queer in this book. Comedy is the best way to present some serious issues like this and here the author is successful as an author. The author also beautifully presented other issues like the life of medico professionals and the recisim faced by the non white people in a white country. As a whole this is a beautiful piece which everyone will enjoy.
I bought this book not knowing what to expect as I had never before read a gay romance. But I felt I should expand my reading horizons a bit and so went for it based on a recommendation I received. Well here's what I felt about The 5 Day Plan.
1) First and foremost, it is a very well written book. I could hardly find any errors in either the prose or the scenarios through the story.
2) The characters are well defined. From Akhil's obsession with flowers to Dan's softer self hidden behind a seemingly 'I don't give a damn' attitude, the development of the characters were just phenomenal.
3) It never trivializes the very sensitive matter of its topic and yet doesn't get painstakingly serious. The author realizes that he's writing a romcom and focusses as much on entertainment as on enlightenment and keeps the narrative fresh.
4) The situations and happenings are all very real. It never diverges from real life even though it's a fictional story. Every single situation feels like something that can easily happen in reality and that makes the book extremely relatable.
5) The supporting cast of characters may seem a little undercooked but they still adda lot of value to the overall story and doesn't make the narrative dull.
So to sum up, The 5 Day Plan is a marvellous book and must be lauded for its attempt to tell a sensitive story with a lot of finesse and fun.

Being an avid lover of romantic -fiction Ashish Rastogi's "The 5-Day Plan" came like a breath of fresh air for me. In our country where, talking about having relationship with same gender is still a big taboo. Author's progressive thinking truly breaks tge streotyoes in our society.
The chemistry between Dan and Akhil, is the major highlight for me, right from their witty banters to cozy conversations, everything looks surreal happening right in front of your eyes.
Author beautifully blended the romance and humour with LGBTQ relationships. I truly admire the way he executed the entire story and makes it a worth read for us. Moreover, his writing style is quite engaging and captivating with remarkable usage of vocabulary.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend this book to all the lovely readers, who love to read romcoms or sizzling gay romantic stories.
It's always great when you don't only connect with the characters of a book you're reading but start empathizing with them. That's what happened with me as I read this book. I simply adored Akhil and Dan and wanted to be friends with both of them and witness their relationship blossoming in front of my eyes. That's how good the writing was. It made me believe that I was reading about two guys who are real and not a figment of the author's imagination. Dan in particular was a such a layered character. He hid so much within himself, because in his position as a top football star it would have been difficult for him to be as frank with his emotions as any other person. And yet he was a simple boy just looking for a steady love, although often resigning to the thought that he may never get it because of his stature and way of life. I truly related to this. You don't have to be a homosexual to feel burdened by societal pressures. It can come to any one of us and bog us down and make us suppress our true feelings. Ashish Rastogi has done a fantastic job in creating characters that everyone irrespective of their sexuality can relate to. I loved reading this book and would urge everyone and not only fans of the genre to give it a try.
I have read a a few gay romances but this one by Ashish Rastogi easily takes the cake. The thing I liked about this book, unlike the previous ones I had read, was that it didn't drown its narrative in pathos. It didn't make it bleak and grim. A lot of times when authors attempt to write a book on a topic such as homosexuality they make it unnecessarily serious and dark. It's as if you can't have fun or have a sense of humor if you're gay. And as a result the story becomes a bit tedious after a while. Ashish Rastogi thankfully doesn't fall into this trap. He keeps the humor alive and gives the characters enough to not only smile themselves but make the reader smile too. Yes it's not all sunshine as it is often not in our real lives. There are problems, there are moments of true sadness, and moments where the characters, especially the leads Akhil and Dan, are at a low, but like in our real lives they come out of it. They mope, yes. But it's not all gloomy all the time. This book essentially is a slice of life story. The things that occur in it can happen to anybody and there lies the ingenuity of the plot and the writing. Just loved it. If you are a fan of good storytelling and writing, please go and pick this one up. You will not regret it.
“He is my song, and I will be damned if I try to forget the lyrics again.” The book 5 Day Plan tugs at your heartstrings, causes secondhand embarrassment, and makes you root for the characters as if you were screaming from the stands.
The story of Dr. Akhil, a shy orthopedic surgeon, and Dan Keeley, a famous football player, begins with a misunderstanding on a dating reality show. They thought they would never see each other again, but the universe had written their story in the stars, in more ways than one. In due course, they break down each other's walls and discover that both are suffering as a result of their queer identities in their respective fields of work.
It is a delightful story that perfectly sums up how “found families” or “chosen families” hold immense importance in the gay community. Kath Weston, in her book “Families We Choose,” explores how kinship operates within the gay community, basing relationships on love over anything else. These chosen families are known to provide material and emotional support to the best of their capabilities. They have an enduring sense of solidarity amongst the members. These chosen families do not mirror biological families, but often become substitutes for the absence of blood ties that are lost due to the acceptance of their sexual orientation, just like the Keelys become a chosen family for Akhil. Their love and adoration for the Doctor grew throughout the book, making them his saviors and supporters in times of crisis.
However, I am disappointed that the subplot involving Akhil's relationship with his family was not explored in greater depth. The author only focused on their rejection of Akhil's sexual orientation and Akhil's escape from home. There was no further development in this case, with either of the parents coming to terms with the fact that we are all humans first and foremost and that conforming to gender binaries is not the path for everyone. Akhil's relationship with his parents and subsequent fleeing from home was never explicitly explored as a subplot in detail. The book would have been more emotionally rich if Akhil's parents had accepted his sexuality and loved him. Even though it is a reality for many people in India, this unexplored area gave the entire story a sense of incompleteness.
Additionally, I am grateful for Indian queer representation and the representation of different body types through Akhil’s character. However, the relationship between Akhil and Dan for almost ¾ of the book felt lustful and nothing else. The emotional depth of a gay relationship was developed way later. It felt like any other gay smut where the shy gay guy falls for the hottest one without knowing anything about him. Though it tried in the last quarter of the book, the typical love story between a jock and nerd lacked emotional depth for more than half of the book.
Though it hardly depicts the difficulties faced by an Indian queer person, it is still a lighthearted read with delightful Indian representation. If Akhil's secondhand embarrassment is not too much for you, you can easily skim through the book!
"The 5-Day Plan" tells the story of Dr. Akhil and Daniel Keely, a renowned soccer star. Their chance meeting on a dating show sparks an immediate connection but the story takes a dramatic turn when Dan’s brother is admitted to Akhil’s hospital.
In a poignant scene from the book, Akhil confides in Jess about his true feelings for Dan, revealing a complex web of emotions. Despite his deep affection, Akhil struggles with the lingering wounds from Dan’s past actions three years ago. Knowing he must navigate five more days of interaction due to Alex's hospital stay, Akhil and Jess devise a careful 5-day plan to maintain distance from Dan while managing the delicate balance of emotions and past hurts. This scene resonated with me deeply, as it highlights Akhil's vulnerability and emotional depth, which I found truly moving.
In my opinion, the story is light and refreshing — a true emotional roller coaster that kept me engaged until the very end. The simple language and well-developed characters are strong points and the internal struggles of the characters are well captured by the author. The message is clear - love knows no boundaries, it transcends gender and is about the connection of two souls linked at the heart. Sooner or later, they will find their way to each other.
This I feel is a very important book. In our country where homosexual relationships are still considered to be a taboo and gay romances are thought to be nothing but sexual escapades of some who we perceive to be different than most, this kind of books help people realize that sex is not the only thing that drives a gay relationship. There is, at the core of it, like any other relationship, love. Complete unadulterated love that the heart feels for another individual. Yes the physical attraction does play a role but then it does that in a normal straight relationship too. I liked how the author showed both the sides of the coin with Akhil's parents ostracizing him for being gay while Dan's family is just the opposite and they not only accept him for who he is, they also help him in his quest for love. Also it's very easy for this kind of a book to become too melodramatic or sentimental, but the author avoids that too and gives us a fun and entertaining story with an inherent message cleverly camouflaged within. Fantastic effort and hats off for picking such a delicate subject matter and telling it in so fine a way. Great job. Truly.
I simply adored the character of Akhil. His goofiness, his ways of thought and speech, his behavior with others, and of course his attraction towards Dan. Everything about him was so well written that I absolutely fell in love with him. Dan had an appeal of his own as well, but he takes a little time to grow onto you whereas Akhil is an instant connect. There's a particular sequence where he meets Dan in the hospital where he works under a rather unimagined situation, and the way he conducts himself being professional to the core despite bursting from inside left me so impressed that I re-read that passage again after I'd completed the book. And that is something I hardly do. So full ten on ten to Ashish for depicting a character so well that the character itself has given the book a recall ans re-read value. I also have to mention the supporting cast. And again, I just adored Mrs. Keely. She felt like such a wholesome mother and her warmth felt like radiating from the pages. A brilliant job done with this book. Loved it and would surely recommend it.
