Janet Lambert, born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, was a popular girls' story author from 1941 through 1969 (and beyond to today). She wrote 54 books during that time about a number of different girls and their families. Her most popular series were about the Parrishes and the Jordons. These stories, and many of her other series, became entwined as the various characters met each other, married, and then had children of their own!

Janet, having an interest in both the theater and writing, decided to write her own plays in which to act. She did achieve her goal and appeared on Broadway. When she married a career Army officer, her life on stage came to a close, but her stories were still flowing. Knowing well the "life of the Army," many of Ms. Lambert's books are set on Army posts throughout the United States.

Legend has it that her stories started as bedtime stories for her children while they were overseas. Each night, the author would tell the next "installment" of the series. Later, after her kids were grown, she penned one of her stories (Star Spangled Summer) and—according to legend—it was sold to a publisher the very day after she sent it to them.

A year has passed since the end of the last Parrish book. Tippy has found a job as assistant to the props set-up for afternoon TV shows. Her life is unexciting but no other prospects are available. She hasn't seen Peter Jordan since his graduation from West Point the year before. He is stationed in Texas. His letters to her are still hopeful that she will fall in love with him.

Then Peter comes home on a week leave and they visit his sister, Tippy's good friend Alice, who is happily married to another Lambert series star, Jonathan Drayton. Tippy is bewildered at the changed Peter who is happy paying attention to Jonathan's sister Christy and who seems to be over her. Suddenly Tippy realizes what she wants out of life but is it too late? She never realizes that it's a plot hatched by Alice!

I'm quite hooked on Tippy's series even though she is not one of my favorite Lambert characters. In this book she finally grows up a bit and realizes that pining after Ken is not a life. I enjoyed seeing Christy Drayton and Roger in this story--rather wish they had gotten another book to themselves--and Alcie is always fun.
I think Peter is the reason I like the Tippy series so much. In this book I liked the way he figured out that Tippy needed to see him in a new light--and he took some risks. But of course it works. :-)
I'm looking forward to the next in this series. It's interesting to grow with these characters over the course of years--about 13 years have passed, I believe, since Star Spangled Summer, although I'm not sure the timelines quite work. But who am I to complain! I've enjoyed watching Tippy grow into a young lady with some sense, and I look forward to following Bobby's story next. That young man has a lot of growing up to do!
It does sadden me to see so many characters--mostly the guys--smoke cigarettes so much, but it is true to the time period, for sure, along with other less-than-admirable features of these books. Trudy is one of my favorite characters since book 1--and now she is growing old. :-( I do like the way the Parrish family loves and honors her as a person--for all readers complain about the racism in these stories, Janet Lambert was possibly ahead of her time in portraying Trudy as she did, although none of the other characters seem to recognize her as a person with her own backstory and life. I wonder if she was ever married? Did she have children? Someone needs to write a Trudy book someday! :-)

I half love this book half hate it. For one I'm glad *Spoiler alert* in the end Tippy and Peter are engaged, but the way Tippy acts through the whole book is so aggravating! I'm also slightly sad that Peter changes, not a lot of, I like the old Peter although Tippy didn't apparently. She acts continually like she doesn't care about him, but then gets mad that he doesn't show signs of still being love with her?!? Girl how many times did you refuse his proposals? Sorry, rant over :). Definitely worth the read since the ending is good.

It's about time, Tippy! I had to smile over this book. Penny had some good words of wisdom to share with her little sister. Such fun reading it again.

I really admire Peter! His patience and steadiness are commendable! Tippy is trying to find her way. She's trying to figure out what she wants, what she's going to do with her life. When it suddenly hits her, it's rather sweet and funny. But Alice, that wasn't very nice to use Christy like that! But it did work. And the ending!

There are some euphemisms and some "darns" in the book. It is not a Christian book.

Janet Lambert books gave me a view of what I thought was a "normal" life and most of all HOPE for a future with my own loving family...

Tippy is working on getting her life back together after a devastating loss. She has a job and keeps herself busy as much as she can but she still feels like there's something missing. With the advice and help of her family, her friend Alice, and especially Peter Jordon, she'll finally come up with the answer.

Tippy stumbles into a career in television after her fiance is killed in Vietnam. As in the previous entry in the series, _Don't Cry Little Girl_, her old friend Peter Jordon is there to comfort her, and she comes to love him to, but is not able to risk a new relationship and commit herself to him until her best friend Alcie, Peter's little sister, and Alcie's friend Christie help Tippy realize just how important Peter is in her life. This was one of my favorite YA books when I was myself a teenager, and it holds up pretty well, because of the delicacy with which Tippy's relationship with Peter is handled. But in my 21st century re-reading I am appalled by the casualness with which Tippy regards the posh job in television that many of today's young people would kill for!
