David G.J. Fontana FBPsS was a British psychologist, parapsychologist and author. He was Professor of Psychology at Cardiff University. He was also visiting professor at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Algarve.

Ik vond dit geen slecht boek, maar het is nogal geschreven vanuit een christelijk standpunt vind ik, er wordt veel verwezen naar het christendom. Alhoewel ook de oosterse godsdiensten wel aan bod komen.
Conclusie: wel een interessant boek, maar ik heb er al betere gelezen over dit onderwerp.

A large frustration I had with this book was the frequent comments by the author that space prevented more examples than were provided. This is a shame because the overall format and chapter structure was good and could with lots of examples (particularly from a scientific perspective) have provided the basis for a classic work.

Split into 3 broad sections, the first (covering Near Death Experiences) really could have done with many more examples. The second section on the illusory planes of existence is the one I have the most problem with because the author attempted to connect mediumistic/communicator examples with religious theory. Fine as a concept but much too often did he lean toward insinuating religion as fact with not enough of a scientific analysis to the mediumship side. This is disappointing from a former president of the Society for Psychical Research. The third section dealing with the formless planes, by its nature, should have been the hardest to portray because spirit/communicator contact is obviously limited due to the formlessness. Fontana had to rely almost exclusively on combining various religious views of the higher planes; extremely unscientific but clearly well researched and interesting all the same - ironically the most believable.

A further criticism would be the editing of the book. Fontana's style is to write very very very long sentences. These really should have been edited into shorter sentences and/or a liberal use of semi colons and colons. The lack of these made the reading hard going when it should not have been.

Criticisms aside, Fontana comes across as a likeable individual, his knowledge of the subject is evident and the book is a useful addition to the genre. I just wish he would air a doubtful view at times instead of appearing too believing in some mediums' reputations.

Al in den beginne vraagt de Homo Sapiens zich af wat de zin en doel van het leven is.
Een boeddhistische leermeester stelde de vraag, ‘identificeren we ons met het oneindige en onsterfelijke of met het eindige en kortstondige’? Zijn wij kortstondige wezens die door de vorm belemmerd worden, of oneindige schepselen die niet geremd worden door onze eigen illusies? De menselijke geest heeft een fantasierijk bewustzijn van eindeloze mogelijkheden, van iets groters en indrukwekkenders dan hijzelf, een spiritueel verlangen om de bron waar hij vandaan komt te herontdekken. Wat is eigenlijk het doel van onze reis, de uiteindelijke opzet en betekenis van ons bestaan? De materialist is ervan overtuigd dat die niet bestaat, maar door de geschiedenis heen zijn er veel (vaak zelfs de meeste) mannen en vrouwen die de werkelijkheid van het onzegbare gevoeld hebben, een gevoel dat voortkomt uit eigen mystieke ervaringen en niet van horen zeggen of speculatie"

Er is de laatste tijd veel gepubliceerd over BDE ( bijna dood ervaring) o.a. door Eben Alexander en Pim van Lommel. Hun conclusie is dat bewustzijn niet gekoppeld is aan het fysieke lichaam en niet ophoudt met de dood, ergo het bewustzijn is oneindig.
Fontana gaat daar uitgebreid op door en legt verbanden tussen paranormale verschijnselen, mediums en de visies van verschillende religies op het leven na de dood
Hij voert bewijzen aan, combineert, deduceert en verbindt. Soms redelijk geloofwaardig om dan af en toe vervolgens weer flink door te draven zonder bronvermelding of onderbouwing. Het is ook bijna ondoenlijk om onomstotelijke wetenschappelijke bewijzen te vinden voor fenomenen die gebaseerd zijn op geloof, verklaringen via mediums en die zich afspelen in andere dimensies. De al dan niet intuïtieve "gelover" kan zich troosten met de gedachte dat de wetenschap ook niet "hieb- und stichfest" kan bewijzen dan dat álle paranormale verschijnselen abject bedrog zijn en dat de wetenschap dynamisch is.
Zelfs Einstein, niet de minste, moest toegeven dat "Spooky actions on a distance" toch feitelijk bleken te zijn en God toch dobbelt, kortom, voor nu niet bewezen fenomenen kunnen morgen logische verklaringen zijn.

instead of a series of anecdotal stories of individuals who either had an NDE or an OBE, this book focusses on the research into Life beyond death from the vantage point of the major world religions, mediums, and psychical research; very fascinating.

the reason why i picked this book cause it looked instructing. cause i always wondered what happens after you die.
i thought it was okay like im not done reading it but it's good so far. its like someone talking to you and it's informing you. it was difficult reading like oh my god well i dont like to read it's boring and it puts me to sleep but this book was actually good just to many big words .
the team of this book is sad talking about death and drama and telling about peoples life death expreants.

Mmm - not quite what I expected. Seems to bruch over the question of whether there is or isn't an afterlife and much of the research seems to be based on anecdotal studies rather than scientific (?). Other than that, which is really what I was after, the book does plant seeds for belief in the possibility of "something" beyond death but............

Een heel interessant boek. Ik wou dat ik het boek in een keer uitlezen kon, maar ik dwaal af. Soms is het boek, of datgene wat ik ervan gelezen heb, heel overtuigend. Maar vaak mis ik uitleg of onderbouwing. Dit boek zal waarschijnlijk eeuwig op mijn "currently reading"-lijst blijven staan.
