This is probably the best book on the subjet of rope jumping I've read and would suit the would-be skipper. Not that there is much to jumping over a piece of string but you want to do it with protecting yourself in mind and getting the most out of your exertions.
I've added rope jumping to my HIIT workouts and it fits in just fine. Rope jumping also adds a skill challenge which I really appreciate. Its' like learning to dance and then seeing how long you can dance for. Here Stewart et al does the smart thing and focuses on the basic business of lifting the body against gravity while passing a rope underneath. No major claims are made for the skill but then one key aspect is ofte missed: a rope is a go anywhere piece of exercise equipment and you can even shadow jump without it.
I also like to watch people jump. It's balletic and very celebratory of the human form.
Although I love to run, I recently started skipping rope because I neither had a place to run nor the time. And boy, I am loving it! Skipping rope is right at the top in the list of most calorie burning activities. The best thing about it is that it needs the least amount of investment: time or money, to provide the same benefits as other exercises. Also, it is easier on the joints and ligaments than running. Thanks to this book I came to know the reason why I always kept stumbling while skipping using my current rope. Turns out it is a few inches shorter than it must be for my height. Having completed the 7 Weeks to Getting Ripped: The Ultimate Weight-Free, Gym-Free Training Program, I have high hopes for this one too. Never have I loved working out so much in my life. I actually really liked this one, and it's true that jumping rope gives one amazing health benefits for a fraction of the cost (temporal and monetary) of just about any other exercise. Fun, too! I'm sold, and the workout plans and directions are surprisingly clear; I think we've all read books that either over or under explained what they wanted us to do, and this manual strikes a happy medium.
The one person I know who jumps rope is the most fit professional I know, so this makes sense. An explanation on the benefits of jumping rope, several workouts and warm-ups, and step by step explanations of the different exercises used. Very useful.
