The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

* Meine Meinung *

At Home in Stone Creek by Linda Lael Miller is a 2009 Silhouette publication.

This is one of those books I picked up in a bargain bin at my local paperback swap store. I’ve always loved this author, but I haven’t even come close to reading all of her books. So, it’s always fun to find one of these older titles, but this book is not one this author’s best efforts.

Ashley and Jack have had an on and off relationship over the years, but the last time they got together, he just up and left without a word, forcing Ashley to pick up the pieces and try to move forward with her life without him, while her siblings are all living blissfully happy lives.

But, out of the blue, Jack returns to Ashley’s B&B by way of an ambulance, a very sick man, and in need of a place to recuperate. Desperate for lodgers, Ashley allows him to stay with her, but at triple the rate she usually charges.

Jack is a ‘mercenary’, but not in the illegal sense. He’s on the run from a notorious drug lord who has injected him with something which is slowly killing him, which prompts him to finally explain his professional life to Ashley.

With time running out, Jack will have to face his mortal enemy and his mortality, which means he will have to leave Ashley again, and this time it could be forever.

This story isn’t bad, and is certainly a nice enough way to while away a hot Texas afternoon. But, the story has a lot going on with too many characters involved. I know it’s nice to revisit characters from previous installments of a series, but there was a bit too much of that here and not enough focus on Ashley and Jack’s relationship. They were in bed or dealing with his professional problems or health issues, which didn’t leave a lot of time for any real emotional connection to develop.

The suspense element in the story is pretty intense, with a child’s safety on the line and Jack’s race against time to find a treatment which will keep him alive.

Overall, this was an enjoyable enough read, but not the best representation of this author’s work.

Linda Lael Miller may not be one of my absolute favorite authors, and her books may not make my Top list, but they are still very enjoyable, easy reads. You know what you are going to get with LLM when it comes to her intertwined McKettrick/Stone Creek/Creed series.

Summary:
Ashley O'Ballivan has watched her older brother and older sister marry and start happy lives while she sticks to her life as a bed-and-breakfast owner and general homebody and continues a lingering off-and-on affair with mysterious Jack McCall. Ashley loves Jack, but he disappeared on her more than she can handle.

Then he shows back up at her home, seriously ill and trailing danger behind him. For the first time, Ashley begins to learn who Jack really is...and who he isn't. He says he loves her, but is constantly pulling away. And now she may lose him to either his job or the strange illness attacking him. Ashely has to decide if she is going to fight for the man she loves, or finally give up on her dreams of family.

Review:
These days, I never really know quite what I'm going to get with a Silhouette or Harlequin book. Ever since they shortened the format, I've found the books rather unpredictable. A lot of authors just can't tell a fulfilling story in 210 pages or so. But LLM seems to be able to do that. I thought this story was solid all around and didn't short-change anything. That alone makes the book a winner.

Aside from that, though, it was an enjoyable, short romance and a great addition to the Stone Creek series. The romance was sweet but definitely had its tenuous moments, giving the book some angst instead of being all sugar and sweetness. And I loved that past characters were prevalent and we got to see how all the others are doing. I also liked that there's a smidge of suspense to the story, giving the book some tension. Jack's illness was perhaps to casually portrayed, but that's fiction for ya.

If I had one real complaint it was that the details given on Jack and Ashley in the previous book, A Stone Creek Christmas, didn't entirely match up with this book. I was actually rather confused at the beginning of this one because it seemed like a big detail of their relationship was being completely skipped over. Ashley and Jack first met and started their relationship in college, the broke up before the met again because of Ashley's new brother-in-law. That's what the previous book set up, but when this one starts, all the references are only to the most recent meeting and I kept thinking, what about before? I actually pulled out that book and double checked the details (I was right). It isn't until like 60 pages into this book that the first part of their relationship is brought up. I thought that was rather odd and it gave the beginning of this book a disconnected feel. Plus, there was one detail totally left out. The previous book states that their college relationship ended because Jack cheated with a cocktail waitress, but in this one, that is never mentioned at all. Instead it says Jack went away to the Navy and they just drifted apart. Total disconnect in details there. I hate it when that happens!

Despite that, I enjoyed this book. Maybe not quite as much as the previous contemporary Stone Creek book, but I still like it a lot. I think fans of the Stone Creek series (especially the contemporary ones) will enjoy this book.

Once again LLM captured my heart with one of her tales. We first run into Ashley O'Ballivan in The McKettrick Way. She is a lesser character, but you wonder what happens to her and her hansome B&B guest Jack McCall. But in this book Jack shows up after a dangerous mission to save a 7 yr. old girl from her drug lord father that has stolen her. While rescueing her he is injected with some kind of toxin, and is very ill. In his delirium he only knows that he wants to get back to Ashley. But going to her puts her into danger. Ashley can't help her feelings for Jack, even though she knows he will probably just leave her again. The path that they must follow to find love and happiness is twisted, but very much worth the trials. I loved it from front to back. I give this one 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read others of this family of Linda Lael Miller's series. This one like so many of hers was a let down. With a little work this story could have been fleshed out and expanded on. There was some action but it ended so abruptly, I kept asking myself is this how it really ends? I have read the other ones for this family and they were ok. A woman twice burned by the same man, is not going to immediately fall into bed with that man no matter how much she loves him. I have almost given up on this author, but I like some of her other series. If you want a quick read (I read this in under two hours) feel free, but if you want something with some substance bypass this book.

I enjoy how Linda Lael Miller creates families and then revisits them with new installments. You get a chance to catch up with familiar characters who already found their special someones and get to know some of the ones who are still waiting. While I have read two of the other books in this series they were published a while back and the characters were not all that fresh in my mind. Luckily Lael Miller included refreshers on who was who and what had happened in their pasts. This story is about Ashley O'Ballivan who has been in love with Jack McCall for years, but due to his job as a mercenary he frequently gets called away for prolonged periods of time. Each time he reappears she tries to stay away from him, but the attraction is just too strong and they get drawn back together again. This time Jack shows up at her Bed and Breakfast in an ambulance having been injected with a toxin while on an assignment to rescue a kidnapped seven-year-old from her drug dealing father. The toxin is not contagious but is slowly killing him and doctors don't know how to cure it. Ashley's family is leery of Jack and his tendency to hurt Ashley by disappearing without saying goodbye and the drug dealer is working to find both his daughter and Jack to exact his revenge. To complicate things Ashley's twin sister Melissa is thinking about leaving town after her romance with a local rancher ended, their sister Olivia is giving birth to twins, her brother Brad and his wife are also expecting a child, there are multiple blizzards and Jack has a family who believes he is dead. It was a nice quick read for a busy holiday time and there was plenty of fun in it. It features more passion than I usually look for in a novel, so if that isn't your thing this might not be the book for you.

Didn't really like this one. Compared to the last book I read it was very prude-ish for a romance novel. It's like number six in the series or something but it gave me no interest to read the others. I didn't like the main or supportive characters at all. The main couple were so in love but he was like a spy guy and she didn't even really know anything about him except how he was in the sack! Plus the main lady was described as wearing long skirts, french braids, baked tarts and was like my age...just not the style I guess I'm looking for in the leading lady role..haha. Sorry Kate but this wasn't a very good pick (and I don't know why the front cover shows a cowboy b/c they never once described the guy like that!)

It's modern and it's about O'Ballivan family. One of the twin, Ashley is facing the return of her lover. She doesn't know what to do and he doesn't want to put her in danger.

The story is good, full of suspence, even if Linda Lael Miller's villains are well, not so bad. They fall dead timely ;)

The heroine, Ashley, is another woman who doesn't really know what to do with herself :( Reading LLM books, I often met this kind of woman. The one who doesn't think so much about herself and it's sad.

All in all, the series is over and I liked it.

My mistake, I picked up this book to read without being able to fully read the 'weathered' book jacket. It's not my usual read. I gave it 3 stars because it was not a bad book. But, I am not likely to pick up others in the series. Not the author's fault that I wasn't better at finding a book more to my taste.

Ashley O'Ballivan has one big complication in her otherwise dull life. The disruptive influence of Jack McCall. She loves him, but he has not exactly been a steady type of guy.

Jack McCall has a whole lot of secrets, but loving Ashley is not one of them. Still, loving her and being with her are a world apart when danger dogs his every footstep.

A nice story. Little light, but nice.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Expected a love story with not much substance but was wrong. Quick read but had a plot as well as a love story. Loved the 2 main characters-- Jack and Ashley as well as the other members of her family. Look forward to reading more books about them.

Ashley is trying to start a Bed & Breakfast, but business is slow. She is also heartbroken because six months ago Jack McCall left her in the night without saying good-bye. They have been sweethearts since they were in school together. Jack is a contract military man who risks his life to save people and put criminals behind bars. In his last job, he was poisoned. He chooses to spend his last days with Ashley and unexpectedly drops back into her life in Stone Creek.

This was a short romance with a simple plot and a lot of character dialog. This family of Stone Creek has some history and a close family bond that was discussed. It was a light read which is what I wanted at the time. I felt there were too many sex scenes for such a short book and the conflict was resolved too quickly.

This book was extremely dated. I checked the pub date, thinking 90s, but it came out in 2009! The FMC, late 20s, runs a B & B but doesn’t own a cell or a computer?? She’s a few years out of college and “isn’t into technology”. She only wears her hair in a French braid and wears her signature broomstick skirts….what?
Besides the out of date clothing and lingo, the romantic scenes were also insanely unrealistic, aka “no foreplay, she climaxed as soon as he entered her in one swift stroke”. Omg. Obviously written by someone in their 60s, trying really hard, who “isn’t into using the world wide web” - direct quote.

I picked up a number of older Linda Lael Miller books at GoodWill and this was one of those that I had not read before. Never disappointed. Except for her twin sister, the rest of Ashley O'Ballivan's siblings are marrying and having babies, something that she had thought she would have done already. But the love her life, since college, Jack McCall, keeps disappearing from her life. He's back again, but very ill and possibly bringing danger to her door. Can he leave his dangerous life behind and make a new one with her in Stone Creek?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it kept me reading to the very end

I'm a big fan of Linda miller And her writings. That however did not cloud my judgment While evaluating this book. This story kept you intrigued kept you reading And you really want the book not to end. The characters were well written and engaging. You felt like you were part of this family like listening in the silent person in the room. I guess I'm gonna have to read more of this series the stone creek series.

Have read other books by Ms Miller and enjoyed. In Ashley's family the others are married and having their own family. Ashley can't seem to do this. Her last special friend, when she woke up one morning had just up and left, not even a note or phone call.

Then one morning shows back up, and very sick. Said he will be leaving again, and can't come back back her life could be in danger. How can she change his mind??

Kenapa buku ini masuk seri Stone Creek ya, padahal kayak gak nyambung sama judul lainnya, kecuali tokoh utama ceweknya itu keturunannya Sam O'Ballivan entah generasi keberapa. Mending dibikin seri baru aja ya.

Ceritanya kurang greget. Dua tokoh utamanya kurang loveable. Belom baca ceritanya Olivia (belom diterjemahin kayaknya) n Brad (ada bukunya Brad gak ya), jadinya kesannya buku ini sesak dengan tokoh2 pendukung yang belom kukenal.

Maybe 3.5 stars

I'm not sure that this book belongs in the Stone Creek series because it takes place so far after the first few books.

This, like most LLM books for me, is just a good story. Her books are solid reads for me. I like the romance, plot, and characters. Its not life changing but just an all around good story. Jack was a bit flakey, but his job was very demanding. There were some details that I thought could have flushed out more but still it was a good story.

As always I enjoyed the Linda Lael Miller book At Home in Stone Creek. Ashley O'Ballivan is in love with Jack McCall but he's up and left her. After a year apart he is delivered to her door by ambulance. He isn't what she thought he was. Will her life ever take a turn and make her dreams of being a wife and a mother come true? A good read.

Ashley and Jack love story is far from easy. He has so many secrets and many scars to hide. But he loves her with all his heart. She has love him and only him for years but the coming and going is hard. Her family thinks its time to move on but its hard.

The continuing story of Ashley (owner of her own B & B) and Jack (the government agent). I was on Ashley's side most of the way until Jack finally had to decide if his reasons for leaving were better than his reason for staying.
