Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name. Note: This is a different person than the fantasy author, Joel Rosenberg
Joel C. Rosenberg is the founder of The Joshua Fund and the New York Times best-selling author of THE LAST JIHAD (2002), THE LAST DAYS (2003), THE EZEKIEL OPTION (2005), THE COPPER SCROLL (2006), EPICENTER (2006) and DEAD HEAT (2008) with more than 1.5 million copies in print. THE EZEKIEL OPTION was named by the ECPA as the Gold Medallion winner of the "Best Novel of 2006." Joel, an evangelical Christian whose mother is Gentile and whose father is from an Orthodox Jewish background, previously worked with several U.S. and Israeli leaders, including Steve Forbes, former Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Natan Sharansky, and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He has been interviewed on hundreds of radio and TV shows. He and his wife have four sons and live near Washington, DC.
What an epic finale! If you thought the first four books in this series were intense, just wait until you read this! The Last Jihad novels give the highly overrated and overhyped Left Behind franchise a run for its money!
What was one of the best series out there turned into a flop of a final book to this series.
While I am not against the Christian message, to turn one of the very best dead-on series of todays world into a book I would have expected to be written by Billy Graham himself, was a huge disappointment.
I found myself turn page-after-page-after-page without doing anything but glancing to see if the religious hodgepodge had stopped.
The way this ended ranked up there with one of the worst ends to a book I think I have ever read. Rosenberg pretty much removed the main characters from the middle 90% of this book, and then in the last few pages brought the book around to some of the best and well developed characters out there, and in a matter of pages terminated their life and any future of this series.
Rosenberg's other books in this series are worthy of the comment on them by Rush Limbuagh as one of the best books you can and should read. This one, however, was a huge disappointment to the nature of this style of a book series. Rosenberg had a good thing going here, and either he fulfilled his contract with this series, or just decided to kill one of the best series - either way, it was/is a shame.
Mr. Rosenberg... may I suggest something you to... perhaps at some point in the future you can go back and rewrite 80% of this book. Even if you do have the main characters die off as you have, please, give us something other than what you gave us with this book. I understand your desire to use your fame as an author to get a message out to your readers... but even as a religious person, I found this to be way beyond what I would have expected from you. All your other books deserve to be up there in the likes of Clancy and Flynn, but this one does not. It deserves a place besides Joel Osteen, Kirk Cameron, and Joyce Meyer (not saying these are bad authors, but rather this book series does not belong on the same shelf as these Christian ministers, with the exception of this final book)
All in all, I walked away from this book feeling like I had been let down by the author. I had waited months for this book to come out. I ordered it the day it was released - and had it shipped overnight. Two days later the book was finished and I felt depressed because of the lack of quality of driving force that this book had compared to the others in this series. I had all my friends reading this series, and when they asked me how this latest book was, I pretty much had to tell them to not even buy it. Better to have Jon and Erin still alive and not have a series completed, then to deal with the flop of this book. Sorry Mr. Rosenberg, you just really failed to keep your series at the top of the charts with this one. I really truly wish I could say something good about this book... but not a single thing in it is worth a positive comment - beyond if you are after a religious book with heavy eschatological slants and a simple "poof, they're gone" of two of the best characters we've had written about over the last few years by any author.
I cannot recommend strongly enough the reading of this series of books, starting with "The Last Jihad" and ending with "Dead Heat". Especially during this critical time in world politics. Amazing, fascinating, insightful, and frightening are just a few of the words I would choose to describe these books.
"Dead Heat", in just the first chapters, opens with the nuclear bombing and annihilation of four major US cities: Washington DC, New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles where the GOP convention is just about to announce that the President of the United States is about to address the gathering to announce his endorsement of the new republican candidate for President of the United States. Someone is clearly trying to not only kill the President, but also totally and completely destroy our government.
Somehow, the Vice President has managed to avoid the devastation, and is quickly sworn in to take over as President. He faces, however, a horrible challenge. We are at war ... but with whom? The missiles were sent from cargo ships in the oceans off our coasts, and they were most likely a Chinese or North Korean model known as the Sunburn. One of the ships is identified as a Liberian-flagged container ship and is almost immediately destroyed by our military, before she could ready more missiles for firing. Our enemies had decapitated the American government!
Is this End Times as prophecied in the Bible? What role does the United States play as there is no reference to the US in the scriptures?
Is this a great read? Absolutely! But, I do suggest you start from the beginning and read them in the correct order. I didn't and wish that I had, but nevertheless, I'm so much better off for having read them. If it could I would give the entire series 10 stars!
"Evil unchecked, is the prelude to genocide." The dramatic conclusion to the Jon Bennett series. Joel Rosenberg is my favorite author, if you haven't guessed by now. This book is far from my favorite, but it still gets its customary five stars. The book is exceptionally well-written, but so dark, scary and tragic, that I couldn;t read it in one sitting as I usually do with Rosenberg's books. Virtually all the characters just get wipped out. It's a very sad book, but honestly, very realistic. Rosenberg does include the rapture in this book, and as I am in theological disagreement with him on that topic, it did seem a bit out of place. That said, it is another thriller that resembles today's world very much and it is well-worth your time and money. Read the first four books FIRST, otherwise this book WILL NOT MAKE ANY SENSE.
Was asked to review this book by my Jewish friend at work (Refers to me as an "honorary Heeb"... quite a decent title for me). A book based on current world events; a bit evangelical for my tastes, but (1) Plausible and (2) well thought out. A lot of details are poor (refers to fighters climbing at 65K feet a second; even missiles can't do that) but the overall result is a potential scenario on how the second coming of Jesus could conceivably start. Not too shabby; looking at his list of available books, the topic is obviously in his front sight. And he is one author who at least acknowledges Jesus himself stating we will not know the time of his return. The signs are upon us, however...
I've enjoyed several of Rosenberg's book, but this one is far too "preachy" and too consumed with biblical prophecy of end times events occurring. Also The Last Jihad, The Last Days, The Ezekiel Option, and The Copper Scroll were chiefly concerned with Jon Bennett and Erin McCoy and their Bourne-like political intrigue and willed with action. Not Dead Heat. Bennett and McCoy are almost minor characters in this last book of the series. In my opinion, it was a disappointing end.
I've also read Rosenberg's The 12th Imam and The Tehran Initiative, the first two books of a different series. Although this Christian convert from Judaism tends to be far to conservative and fundamental for my religious preference, they were generally enjoyable - primarily for the action sequences.
The last book of "The Last Jihad" series, it was the most riveting one yet. It grips you from the very first page, and take you down paths with twists and turns that you never see coming. The good guys don't always win. Rosenberg seems almost prophetic in his storytelling, which ties in so closely to modern day political events that you can see his story actually happening in the real world. Indeed, some of it has. A brilliantly written book that is near impossible to put down once you start.
This is the last book of this exciting thriller. There is much sadness in this book, but at the end there is victory. I believe that some people read this book without reading all of the previous books. I believe this causes a low rating, because each book depends on what was written beforehand. If I just read this book without the previous books, I would also give it a lower rating.
Best book I ever read. As a Christian this gives me hope for the future, even though it might seem scary. If you are a convinced Christian and you are perhaps scared of our future, read this book. It will calm you and it will all make sense. ❤️✝️
Again, a great story line but way too much Bible thumping. I was ready to throw the book out the window several times. The saving grace for me was the ending. It actually brought me to tears and really touched me deeply.
This series could have been a 4 or 5 star series if the Christian life and belief system was portrayed in a manner that was more believable and more ... real.
For instance, in one chapter, John Bennett is visiting Mordecia and just stops the conversation and prays. It was odd in how it was portrayed.
In another, he got on his knees. Who does that nowday? Not that I'm knocking praying on your knees but it is not necessary. You can pray standing up, driving your car, in bed. The point is to do it. Not how you do it.
In another scene where the President of the US is accepting Christ as Lord, he is told to get on his knees.
If I get on my knees, I often can't get back up. Again, it not how we physically do it, it's that we are engaged in prayer on a regular basis.
It's just felt so fabricated for me. I kept thinking, no one I know talks like this or behaves like this.
I really wish Chrisitan writers would stop depicting Christianity in this manner.
Sadly, the theme and the plight of the story and the series, are all great. The just get lost and distracted by the over evangelistic thumping that is woven throughout the book.
The last installment by Mr. Rosenberg in The Last Jihad series and he does not disappoint. Although I will tell you the ending may leave you feeling like the carpet has been pulled out from under you a little bit. He does leave the door open for more, which I sincerely hope he will write in this series. At any rate, it is a race to the end following Jon and Erin Bennett and their service and trials across the world, while the globe seems to be coming unglued. Yet again, Mr. Rosenberg creates a story that could be pulled from the headlines in part and the other part could soon be. If you enjoy action, with a good dose of current politics, headlines, and Middle East drama, as well as Faith woven throughout, I cannot recommend this series enough. Hope you'll check it out.
I listened to this as an abridged audiobook while on a road trip. I thought it was going to be a political thriller, but it turned out to be another Dispensational Pre-Tribulation rapture novel of the Tim LaHaye (Left Behind series) and Oliver North variety. A clumsy and heavy-handed approach to sharing the Gospel message using scare tactics. Just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover.
A very mixed-up book with equal parts of religion dogma and nuclear war. The USA is attacked with nuclear bombs, the president, his successor and HIS successor are killed and so are most of the main characters. Some of the descriptions of the chaos that results from the attacks are interesting but mostly this is a book to be ignored.
Creepy and gripping. The description of the shoot down of the Air Force spy plane was full of errors. A 707 flying at 49,000 feet? Impossible. A Mig 29 climbing at 65,000 feet per SECOND? Ridiculous.
Whew! Joel C. Rosenberg's political thriller, Dead Heat, shakes, rattles and rolls the world of the book and the reader, who invests time in its harrowing events.
Book #5 in The Last Jihad Series, I'm behind in reading about the terrifying tales of the Earth's last days before Armageddon in the first four novels. After a brief buildup, Rosenberg jumps right in with the United States under nuclear attack from an undisclosed enemy that decimate several American cities. In his Author's Note, Rosenberg writes:"I pray to God the novel you hold in your hands never comes true. Certainly not as written." Rosenberg further writes that he didn't have a vision and that Dead Heat is a work of fiction; he makes it all up. Over the years, he's seen as a bit of a prophet. Who could argue? The man knows his Bible, he has geopolitical connections and has his imagination.
I didn't give away much. Just look at the present global tensions. That's Dead Heat in an infancy state. Then when I get to know the people in their predicaments, Rosenberg flips the script on me. Reading Dead Heat reminds me of attempts to arrange deck chairs on the Titanic. People understand this. Dead Heat's story line will come one way or another. I'm a Christian and I know enough Bible that the book rings true. Beyond a thrilling narrative, I admonish everyone to get your heart right with the Lord God Almighty before you have to face the scenarios in Dead Heat. This book haunts you.
For Jon and Erin Bennett, the world seems to be spinning dangerously out of control. A new dictator is rising in Iraq. China is making threatening new moves toward Taiwan. North Korean forces appear ready to strike south. Israel is feverishly trying to complete the Third Temple. Oil prices are surging. And in the wake of an horrific war in the Middle East, President James MacPherson's second term is coming to an end. Now the battle to succeed him is heating up into one of the most fiercely contested presidential elections in American history, and the Bennetts realize the stakes could not be higher. Who will lead a bitterly divided country over the next four years? What can the U.S. do to shape the new world order? And just what role--if any--does the U.S. play in the last days? As the presidential campaign narrows into a dead heat, the Secret Service learns of a catastrophic plot to assassinate one of the candidates--but which one, and can the terrorists be stopped in time?
Joel Rosenberg is one of my favorite authors. Dead Heat is the last book in the series of The Last Jihad. I’ve read all of them and I could not put any of them down. That includes this one. He is an amazing story teller.
From the very beginning it is a gripping story and I am not going to give anything away as there are so many surprises along the way. However as the book opens war is pending, oil prices are high, China is threatening, there’s a new dictator in Iraq, and Israel is trying to complete the Third Temple. The American President, James MacPherson, is just completing his second term with the election campaign ahead.
My favorite characters are Jon and Erin Bennett who were just married in the last book, The Copper Scroll. Both had been involved in the political world and were close friends with President MacPherson and his family. As the book opens they have been working with the UN at a refugee camp in Jordan for the past several months.
What a rollercoaster of a book! Anybody that thought the Ezekiel Option was intense (myself included) just wait till you read this. Some reviews give this book a poor rating because of the intensity but I think that's foolish. Rosenberg is laying out what we can expect to see in Earths final days based off Biblical prophecy. It isn't supposed to be a pretty picture and I'm glad he doesn't sugar coat it.
Additionally, he did a great job of making this book really come to life. You finish each chapter with chills as you realize "that could really happen". Like his other books, you will walk away with a refreshed perspective on the fragility of the world. Men ultimately don't control the world, that honor belongs to God. Try as you may but the events prophesized in the Bible will occur on God's time table. As seen in this book, you can't prevent them from happening. Take the lessons of some of Rosenberg's characters and side with him cause this trains headed for destruction.
The last of the five book (Last Jihad) series is the least enjoyable. Whereas the first novel focused on character development and plot depth and complexity, over the course of the series the focus shifted purely to a Bible study of Christian eschatology and evangelizing.
A series that tries to depict one flavor of the ‘end times’ (among Christians there are very many interpretations) is welcome if well written, either as a fast moving novel or as a scholarly lesson. Sadly Rosenberg is rather ham fisted in his approach treating his readers as children that need to be lectured. It is not surprising that he ignores mainline Jewish biblical interpretations for a dogmatic Christian viewpoint.
The series as a whole appears to try to convert Jews to Christianity in a particularly ineffective manner which I suspect will lead the series to be ignored by most. I also expect that many evangelical Christians will thoroughly enjoy the series, as an example of preaching to the choir.
Wow, talk about a story about what could occur before Jesus comes to take His people home, God forbid! But in the last 10 years, with evil & wickedness abounding more than ever in history, His saints need to be awake, aware, praying, interceding, petitioning the throne of God on behalf of America, her government, our Constitution of the USA & for His great harvest!!! We are living in a time where the book of Revelation is so much nearer than ever before & we need to ready ourselves for the persecution that is coming! God has given us spiritual weapons to Defeat our enemies so Put On the Full Armor of God Every day!!! We are fighting a spiritual battle & we need to Send & Re!ease the armies of God & His heavenly hosts of all rankings & divisions to fight on behalf of our prayers! Hold Ground Soldiers!!!
This is the last of the Jon and Erin Bennett series and, unlike the rest in the series, the Bennetts are relatively minor characters in this book. I was disappointed in this: there was a lot of repetition from previous books in the series, the Bennetts' role was greatly diminished and, to me, this lacked the sense of realism that the rest of the books in the series had and the basis for which much of the series is based upon. The plot, to me, was simply too ambitious and not enough time was spent developing the various subplots to tie everything together. To do this would have required a longer book, perhaps much longer, which could have its own drawbacks, but would have helped the overall story-line.
Of course I read these out of order as I stumbled upon The Copper Scroll first. So I had to read the next two. Wow. Suspense. Lots of death and faith. This one is more "preachy" as it's the last in the series, but given the events, it's understandable. A truly thought-provoking read that has you mourning those lost. My only beef is while the end was posed as hopeful, it's kind of disappointing as it seemed like the story could continue but it simply drops. I wanted to read more! There is room for another, better ending to the series as it really didn't end with so many events yet to come. Still, I'm going to try another series by him to see how those go.
I should've ended this series with 'The Copper Scroll'; thankfully I was able to check-this-out of my local library. Everyone who contributed to the 'BIG picture' of God's plan for bringing creation and man back to Himself in 'The Last Jihad' is 'taken-out' in this finale. The main 'evil doers and power mongers' bent on eliminating Israel from the face of the earth are 'waiting for their judgment', but aren't too terribly worried about it. My heros include Dr. Mordecai and Erin Bennett; Jon was a nice 'addition'.
I love this series so am sad it’s finished but a realistic ending.
Excellent book!! Sad the series had to finish though. I really feel he could have written a final novel showing how it may be after the rapture. This seemed to go so fast and not involve the depth of the main characters we are used to but a good book to share with someone who does not know how important it is we get our lives right with Christ. An eye opener too as to what really could happen in the not too distant future.
The final installment of The Last Jihad series by Joel C. Rosenberg, this novel was pure suspense, even though I know generally what to expect from the final days of earth. As a Christian, I believe what the Bible says about the last days, so "seeing" it played out on the grand scale Rosenberg uses is chilling. The reader of this audio book did a superb job, with one exception: there is a distinct pronunciation variance between the words prophecy and prophesy. Two different words and meanings. But a great read/listen nonetheless.
