Salome Thomas-EL is the type of teacher that anyone would want to have, especially those who must attend public school in the inner cities. He used the game of chess, to level the playing field with his students -- many of which were gang member and all of which who were at risk. As a result of teaching them the game of chess and implementing clubs in the schools that he has been a part of many of the students have exceeded and excelled far beyond the low-bar pre-set statistics. As a result of reading this book, I began taking a chess board to the many schools that I have worked in. I found similar results as those that are chronicled in Thomas-EL's work -- including helping many labeled as special-ed. This is a most inspiring book, not just for educators, but for any one who wants to make a difference in the life of an at-risk child. Additionally, this isn't a one-sided presentation that he makes. His successes are profound, because they were catapulted by his failures -- he's not afraid to go into detail about that, because it was a game changer. You won't be disappointed with this one.

Elegant and forceful. What's most striking about Thomas-El's examination of the power, pitfalls, techniques and nuances of influencing students and the community is its utter conviction. Sometimes his examinations can border on overly-simplistic while you're reading. And yet the more you ponder the book, it hits you: the power of influence is in its simplicity and honesty.

Lots of very powerful insights by the leader. A great book about allowing yourself to be a little more than you thought, overcoming negativity, and the power of being a role model. Exactly what being a teacher is all about!
