Seattle ca. A.D. 2020. A post-Pulse city crawling with cops on the take, crooks on the make, genetically engineered supersoldiers, and hundreds of thousands of plain folks just hanging on by a thread to the sputtering engine that was once the all-powerful American economy . . .
November 12, 2021: My name is Logan Cale—though whoever finds this material will undoubtedly know me better as Eyes Only. In the years after the Pulse struck, greed, corruption, and cruelty exploded on a scale I never before imagined possible. Something had to be done.
I began working as an investigative journalist to expose the truth, but the truth brought a lot of enemies out of the woodwork. So I went undercover, and EYES ONLY was born. For years, with the help of a lot of good people, we've uncovered many wrongs and made them right. No matter what the dangers, this work needs to survive, and continue . . . especially some of the more explosive facts still need to be revealed. Facts concerning the Grand Coulee massacre, the secret government program known as The Phoenix Project, and the Conclave's breeding program, to name but a few.
Putting these documents together in one place poses a big risk—not just to the corrupt, but to the innocent as well. Yet the chance that these truths might remain unspoken is an even bigger risk.
Dave Stern has written/edited/collaborated on multiple previous works of fiction/non-fiction, including the New York Times-bestselling biography Crosley, the epistolary novel Shadows In The Asylum, and an unauthorized Adam Sandler biography composed with the help of the good people in the Smith College Library. His most recent work is Codename: Blackjack, the second thriller in the Sagas of the Cincinnati series.
Okay, so I did not watch the television show when it was on, but have seen both seasons on DVD, recently. I like the show. I admit it. The second season was better than the first and I am not sure why it was canceled. So after a brief search of TV "tie-in" material I found this book. A collection of stories and e-mails wrtitten by one of the main characters of the TV show. And sadly, I have to report it was not what I expected. Yes, I thought the idea of the book was clever and thought it might be enjoyable. However, most of the collections of materials were not directly relatable to the TV show timeline. So it was a hard to follow, and didn't really illucidate any new information in any real appealing way. If you wanted some other information about the stories or characters about the show, you might be better off writing them in your own hand than reading this.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I'm finally going through my physical tv, film etc. tie in library owned book list, to add more older basic reviews. If I liked a book enough to keep then they are at the least a 3 star.
I'm only adding one book per series (etc.) and I'm not going to re-read every book to be more accurate, not when I have 1000s of new to me authors to try (I can't say no to free books....)
First time read the author's work?: N/A
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Leaping off from the TV show "Dark Angel", the book is a collection of notes, e-mails, memos, news paper clippings, and other files collected by "Eyes Only" about various cases he's working to reveal. Unfortunately, the book raises more new questions than it provides answers to canonical questions from the show. Anyone hoping to find out more about the Dark Angel world will be satisfied, but if you're hoping to find lots of answers, you'll be left frustrated and disappointed.
As a huge fan of the show "Dark Angel" and a reader of the 3 book series by Max Allan Collins, this was a must read for me. Those who were not fans of the show will not enjoy this read. I gave it 3 stars based on the disjointed manner in which the information was compiled. I still enjoyed the book, but did not see it as the best effort that could have been offered to fans who missed the show.
