Rate this book
When Bob, the Man on the Moon, spots a strange seed bouncing along the surface of the Moon, little does he know that it will grow overnight into the first ever Moontree! Earth tourists (especially the lumberjacks) come to try to get a piece of Moontree, but Bob keeps them at bay (oblivious to the alien assistance he's getting). Only when things start to get really shocking (or should we say shaking) do we discover the secret of the Moontree - it's seeds are actually eggs, each one containing a baby alien!

Bob and the Moontree Mystery by Simon Bartram is the story of Bob, the Man on the Moon, who also happens to be the world’s most brainy moon expert and his best-ever friend, a dog called Barry. In his role of looking after the moon he mysteriously discovers a strange beany-seedy thing growing out of a crater and with Bob at his side, he is determined to work out what it is.

The beany-seedy thing rapidly sprouts into a spectacular, first ever moontree that becomes a tourist attraction, closely guarded by Barry until a moonquake catapults it into the universe. There is more to the moontree however than meets the eye, and the last page reveals the secret of the tree’s golden podberries.

Bob and the Moontree Mystery is a quirky fun filled adventure, beautifully illustrated on every page. The pictures are bright, colourful and engaging and also packed with detail. I love the book’s touches of humour, like the missing ‘o’ in the word moon in Bob’s “hands-off” sign , the description of the eccentric Bob and how he remains oblivious to extra territorial involvement in the mysterious moontree.

I discovered this great book whilst trawling for an appropriate text with a fantasy setting for my year 2 class in SBT1. It proved to be a fantastic story for a week’s worth of literacy lessons in which I discussed character and setting using deduction, inference and opinion questions. The class were engaged by the mystery at the heart of the story and the book’s illustrations which I displayed on the interactive whiteboard and we had some great discussions on what the beany-seedy thing could be and what would happen next to Bob and Barry. We also undertook some role play with different pupil’s from the class playing the part of Barry and answering questions posed by their class mates. At the end of the week, the class wrote their own story to a title from a different book in the Bob series. It prompted some fantastic creative writing and suggested the class had really enjoyed the story and considered the relationship between the two main characters. I didn’t realise when I stumbled upon Bob and the Moontree Mystery that it was part of an established series of stories about Man on the Moon, Bob but I now plan to read more and would recommend this, particularly to mums of children aged 6-8 years old or teachers of year 2.
