Equal parts Mayberry, 'A Christmas Story,' and 'The Sandlot'. This book made me laugh more than any book has in a while. I loved the authenticity of the characters of this small town and how charming and dynamic their personalities were in the eyes of the author, beginning with the baseball coach in the opening chapter and continuing through to the girl who loses her pet dog in the last chapter. As her parents explain that the dog has gone to be with God, the girl wonders aloud why God would want a dead dog. Reading through Andy's recollections (I don't know him, but he seems so personable that I think he would insist that I call him by his first name) helps me to realize the extraordinary wonder of our ordinary lives. Andy Andrews has a gift for capturing that essence in a way that compels you to keep reading. And as you read you become an honorary resident of Sawyerton Springs.

This is one of those few books that make me laugh out loud.

This book is filled with snippets of life that are randomly yet artfully arranged in an order that is not apparent and yet flows seamlessly. It chronicles the life adventures of a boy who happens to be the Baptist minister's son in a very small town from boyhood through adulthood. The stories wander from childhood to adulthood through a child's eyes to adulthood and can be confusing until you catch on that chronology is not important.

This book is light easy reading that is appropriate for the beach or vacation, but is not vapid and empty. It contains heart warming stories that somehow combine to present a small town that I sort of wish I had grown up in!

I had many favorite stories, with the ping pong balls, running away, and Christmas at the Methodist church being among my favorites. Which were your favorites?

Maybe I wasn't born in Alabama, but this book kept reminding me with my different funny, risky childhood stories within a very light nice comedy. It was a nostalgia between its pages.

As a Baptist who grew up in a small Alabama town not very far from the author himself, this may be the most relatable book I've ever read. I often found myself going back to re-read a chapter aloud to my wife so we could laugh out loud together. This book is written as a collection of short stories - each chapter could almost stand alone - but the author ties them together so well. The only disappointment I experienced was upon reading some details that were lifted directly from The Andy Griffith Show itself. It's the only reason I give this four stars instead of five. I don't know why that affected me so much, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess after a few chapters I was reading as if these were true stories that really happened in the life of the author, but when I started seeing details that were taken from another source it made me second guess what I believed about the "facts" in the whole book. For some reason, personal stories are just funnier if they really happened and it took the wind out of my sails to think that I've been reading fiction the whole time, all the while believing it was truth. Still... it's a good, wholesome, fun read that I would highly recommend.

We are on a road trip to the south. Thought this book would be a good read aloud while driving. I was right. But, beware. As I read and my husband drove we were laughing until we were crying and that might not have been too good while he was at the wheel. What a delightful, light-hearted read often with a poignant lesson. Get ready to laugh.

I dare you to try reading this aloud to someone. I read this over 5 years ago and I still chuckle thinking about it. I reread it again this spring and laughed anew. Poignant and heartwarming, this is Americana in writing.

Its about Andrew and some of the lessons he learnt growing up. Very easy to read and made me think about the lessons I have learnt and or should be looking for.

Книга за миналото, настоящето и бъдещето, за произхода, пътя и мечтите. Едно приятно пътешествие с машина на времето. В отделни моменти носталгично, забавно и брутално, но най-вече вдъхновяващо.

This book is like a breath of fresh air. If you like to think happy thoughts, and go back in time, read this book. Each chapter is its own story. Take your time - but I couldn't put it down.

A very sweet story that follows a country town and all of the personalities that make it great. If a refreshing story of a town where time stood still.

This is a light, very quick read that kept me giggling the whole time. It is a collection of stories from the author's childhood in a small town. Some of the chapters are heartwarming, some funny, and some just thought-provoking.

One of my favorite stories was when two old friends are fishing and get in an argument which lands them both in the water. They end up on a small island and while trying to figure out how to get rescued, they get in a heated discussion about Gilligan's Island. Another favorite is when a wife is angry all day about little things her husband did or didn't do one morning, but when he sends her flowers she is reminded what a great husband she had and is glad she didn't tell him she was angry.

Return to Sawyerton Springs would be a great beach read, or for any time in the year when you need to smile.

Hilarious. Enlightening. Nostalgic. Real. Beautiful.

What a great read. This book inspired me to want to write about my own life. I've been intending to write (and sort of, from time to time dabbling with writing) some of my own stories/ vignettes.

Memoirs like this are both encouraging and debilitating to me. Encouraging because I'm reminded how much I love to see little windows or pockets of life from those who I know and even those who I don't know. And debilitating because it was done so well that I can't imagine myself being able to bring my stories to life enough to really make them acceptable to share.

But oh how wonderful life is. There is beauty in the little things. There is meaning and largeness in others that we can't always see at the time. There are lessons to learn, and laughs to be had. People are incredible, and I'm always grateful for reminders of that truth.

Return to Sawyerton Springs

I feared at first this would not be interesting. After all, it's a story about a place I've never been, about people I don't know and the author wasn't even super famous! However, I was very surprised when I was drawn into this story and wanted to know what each character was up to and what was going to happen next.
Andy Andrews, has a way of bringing every day lives and make their story come to life and he turns tails of their actions and activities into humorous, poignant stories.
This is a great read and I'll bet you are taken by how this book really pulls you into its story.

I loved this book! Written in the comfortable, homey style of Jan Karon, the author Andy Andrews introduces you to his hometown in such a way that it has you feeling like his neighbors are your old friends. This book feels like a cup of hot chocolate on a snowy day.. Full of thought provoking messages as well. It's not great literature, per se, but it just made me feel good to read it. We all need a "feel good" read every now and then. Easy bedtime reading as well. It was written in a short story style that made it easy to pick up and put down again.

Andy Andrews is, at the same time, both roll-on-the-floor funny, and warm-and-fuzzy poignant. I first encountered one of his short-stories, "Baseball, Boys, and Bad Words" years ago in Country America magazine, and thought it was hillarious. Recently, in searching for that story again, I found this book - which is a collection of similar stories by Andy. It was love at first read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good laugh, or a return to simpler times, or both. Warning: be prepared to laugh!

I laughed out loud while reading at the doctor's office waiting room... it was such a funny book! By the same author of "The Heart Mender," this book is actually about himself growing up in a small town. There were many characters (all amusing) but no pressure to memorize who is who or remember who is related to whom. This might be a good book club read as it includes a guide in the back. A clean, quick read.

Saccharine as hell. It would've been a little better had I been reading it to a room full of grandmothers who responded after I read the last line of each chapter--there's like 30 in this small book--in unison, with, "Isn't that sweet?" And then let me select a cookie from a tray.

Boys will be boys, everyone is good-hearted type of stuff, capitalizing on any Southernisms whenever given half a chance or less. I'd give it one star if I didn't relate to the dang Southernisms.

Now this was a good book! It was Lake Woebegone from a Christian standpoint. Having spent much of my life in small towns, I identified with much of it, like saying your favorite Bible character in response when the roll is being called for a women's meeting.

I really enjoyed it!

I would have to say that I am a true Andy Andrews fan. I was not disappointed with Return to Sawyerton Springs. The way the stories were intertwined with the seasons made me remember the days in my hometown in a fond way. Take the time to read this fun book...you won't regret it.
