Ben is Toby's bartender, and he's driving Toby crazy. Not just because Ben gets himself hurt all the time, but because he's there. And Toby can't keep himself from having scenes with him, and he can't keep himself from holding the boy afterwards, either, and thinking about how nice it feels. Even though Ben's his employee and they shouldn't be doing this in the first place. His Something is a quick look at the event which might change Toby's mind when it comes to Ben - whether Toby wants to admit it or not.
Doing relatively sane and responsible things during the day, I'm always looking forward to coming home to see what my characters have been up to. It’s only very rarely what I want them to do, but there you go. I have no problems whatsoever reading both Flaubert and smut (although not at the same time), and the only thing I like more than chocolate is a good comfort read.
To me, the best thing about writing is the rush; it’s almost a physical high when you’re writing and it’s going well. As for the worst part: Nobody ever told me that fictional characters do exactly as they please! All that talk about ‘the author’s intention’? This author is running around, desperately trying to figure out what my heroes want to do and then coaxing everybody into something vaguely resembling a consistent plot. Sigh.
Much too short. But very good. I am reading all the Conwy's free short stories on his web site. I have already read A Russian Bear and Alphabet Soup. They are not free but they are excellent.
The summary is pretty good-so, on to other things. No explicit sex, about 3-4000 words (my own rough estimate). I didn't read the other books in the series, but this & another short fic on the author's site make me consider reading them just to see more of these characters. I'd love to know what this sub is like when he's not 'woozy'! *grin* 3-3.5 stars for the work itself rounded up for that subtle something that makes me want to know the whole story (composition + emotion). The editing is not perfect; what shines here is the character building and the scene setting. An enjoyable short story. tangential rant on short story writing: my reviews are more generous to shorter stories, they just seem harder to get right. I'm a reader not a writer, and my passion is short stories. Most of the shorts I've read are not listed on my Goodreads page (because doing so would mean doing a lot less of those pesking daily living tasks like working, sleeping, eating, plus quite frankly I'd rather be reading...). But various authors for example: Anton Chekhov, Vladimir Nabokov, Stephen King, Amy Lane, & Dr. Seuss each are quite good at the fine art of content distillation, making their shorts stories better than their novels, IMO.
Really cute short story about Ben, the short-sighted bartender, and Toby, the club owner, from the 'Russian Bear' series. This story stands on its own and gives some nice background for these two characters. Now, of course, I'd like a whole book about them!!! Please?
Ben is too vain to wear his glasses and keeps having accidents at work. When Toby has to take him to the hospital after one particularly bad situation, the truth comes out. Ben is too cute for words, all he wants is to look good for Toby. Toby is a badass Dom who doesn't want a relationship - except that around Ben, his veneer is seriously cracking. Personally, I think it's already too late for Toby... but he's still "struggling". Very, very funny.
If you like the characters in the 'Russian Bear' series and are curious about Ben and Toby, the you should definitely read this. And if you just want a fun short story about a clumsy sub and the Dom who has fallen for him - but refuses to admit it, then you should also read this, After all, it's free!
A very entertaining and HOT series - I'd love to see more about Ben! 4 novels and 6 short stories. Interesting characters with their own unique stories. Here is the reading order I use:
Who You Are – Mischa’s beginning as a Dom short Russian Bear – Mischa & Tom meet Malaria, cholorea, etc. – Mischa & Tom short His Something – Ben & Toby short New Years Resolution – Ben & Toby short Happily Ever After – Mischa & Tom takes up right after Russian Bear Alphabet Soup – Andy & CK (takes place same timeframe as Happily Ever After) Saturday Night Live – Jeff’s short Of Russian Myth and Lore – Mischa & Tom short How to Domesticate a Russian Bear – Wrap-up story
