This arc about the death of XIII’s father concludes. Van Hamme seems to have a penchant for using the KKK and rape repeatedly. Maybe that’s what he thought America in the 80’s was like. It’s certainly a unique European perspective of America.

Album seven, and the end of the second story arc of this long running series. I must admit that I thought this would be a never ending story with perpetual cliff-hangers at the end of every album. With two clear-cut, no-nonsense endings in a total af seven albums, I've been proven quite wrong, even though there is a ongoing, overarching, continuous story as well.

Here we get to follow XIII (whatever his real name may be...) as he continuous to investigate his own murky past, and end up in a remote ski resort, which is cut of from the world by an avalanche, and is of course full of people who for various reasons wants to kill him.

The story arc in album 6 and 7 was in many ways better than the former in that it was a bit more sedate and if not likely then at least plausible, which is needed for me to feel involved. In a superhero comic, I'm well aware that people can fly and jump tall buildings in a single leap, and have no problem with suspending my belief and accept that, but in such a realistic story and with almost photo realistic art, I prefer it if the setup in at least somewhat possible.

The latest long-running thriller comic I've read was 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa. There are definite similarities in the continuous storyline, though so far van Hamme is playing it more fair to the reader I would say. I hold 20th Century Boys as a better comic, all-in-all, but there was always that feeling that Urasawa was stringing you along, extending the storyline again and again, which was a bit annoying, even though I stuck it out through all 24 volumes. Van Hamme tells a more tight story, but it's a bit too wordy for my taste, and Vance, though very proficient at what he does, can not in my book even come close to comparing to the inspired art of Urasawa.

XIII is still stuck in small town Greenfalls after an avalanche closes off the main road to town. He discovers his father was murdered by the KKK during the cold war for mysterious reasons. He meets an elderly man who remembers him and wards off the assassin mongoose and the corrupt sheriff's manhunt with his accomplice, Major Jones.

Hyvää ja sujuvaa seikkailua ja asioiden selvittelyä hyvällä ja sujuvalla kuvalla.

Vihdoin paljastuu suurin osa jäljellä olevista salaisuuksista. Aika paljon selitystä, mutta on toimintaakin. Mausteena taas valitettavasti rasismia ja misogyniaa.

An interesting end to the Green Falls run of XIII. It's interesting to see what parts of it were used in the TV series, and what was changed. Even after having watched the TV series, reading these comic books doesn't get a bit boring.

This is a good chapter in the story of XIII. It unravels some mysteries, and is action-packed. But it does leave some questions. For example, what will become of the Mongoose?
