Ben spends the holidays with his nose in the sand and bottom in the air. It's not because he's shy - though some of his classmates do call him the Shrimp. It's because he's got a great idea for his wildlife project.
A competition is on! The class projects are going to be judged by a famous TV wildlife presenter, and the prize is irresistible. Ben would love to win it, but others have their eyes on the prize too...
I am Emily Smith, author of a range of books for readers of about seven years and upwards.
Magic or adventure, mystery or mayhem - whatever your tastes in books, there should be something to suit you. But all my books should make you laugh (and one or two might make you cry...).
I have won prizes (yay!) and was a runner-up in the Blue Peter Award (which was fun).
I am currently working on my new series The Days of Feere - watch this space!
Ben Shrimpton likes to collect shells, but due to his size and his shy demeanour, is nicknamed 'Shrimp'. His school's wildlife competition gives Ben the chance to fight back against rich class bully Colin who is cruel to him, with the inevitable happy ending. A reader-friendly story which the Year 6 group I shared the book with thoroughly enjoyed, if possibly simplistic and predictable in its storyline. There are plentiful opportunities for children to take this story into the classroom and school/community environment, especially if they live near a river or the sea: nowadays children seem less interested in collecting shells or investigating underwater habitats than in the past!
The Shrimp By Emily Smith This is a lovely story that both boys and girls will enjoy reading. It may be a little predictable, but nevertheless the story is very enjoyable. It tells the tale of a boy’s holiday project. This makes it a good book to take away and may even trigger a child’s own project.
