Dries Van Noten (Hardback) - Common

Rate this book

This is the 300-page catalog from the 2015 "Dries Van Noten-Inspirations" exhibit at the Louvre's Les Artes Decortifs museum. Van Noten explained and exhibited the things he found for inspirtion for each season of fashion, from flowers to Richter to India. Over fifty seasons of fashion are included here, fitting under various themes. He takes everything found in history, in nature, on the internet and in his travels and combines with an amazing color sense to create very wearable clothes. A good look at the mind and reserve of one of the best designers of our time.

this is a ridiculously beautiful book for a designer who damn well deserves something like this (and obviously an appropriate pairing for his exhibition at musee les arts decoratifs). the interviews of dvn are, strangely enough, not that illuminating - in many ways they are rehashes of interviews of dvn available online from the guardian and the like - but at least in one convenient place. the english version does come with the occasional typo, though, which is a bit of a pity. and i've yet to see a book to at least have one or two shots of his magnificent gardens (which, er, one would expect given the floral motifs he's so fond of?), which is also a pity.

if you also happen to have the dvn book that he self published in 2005 (2006?), the self published version is far more comprehensive of the two for collections but obviously missing the collections post 2005 (of which there are many amazing ones, fall/winter 2009 coming to mind). on the other hand, this is only ~$50 and the first book cost quite a bit (and now even more in the used market given its limited printing).

Was not that familiar with this fashion designer, but I really like his inspiration from fine artists like Elizabeth Peyton and Yves Klein to film.
