About the author

Karur Neelakanta Pillai was a Malayalam short story writer and one of the founders of Sahithya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham (Writers' Co-operative Society).
He began his career as a school teacher. He is considered one of the best short storytellers of the Malayalam language.
His short stories often portray the plight of the middle class in a simple and straightforward manner. Many of his stories were translated into other Indian languages and English. The short story "Anakkaran" (The Elephant Boy) was translated into English

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ 5 കഥകളാണ് ഇതിലുള്ളത്. പൊതിച്ചോറ്, മോതിരം, മരപ്പാവകൾ, പൂവൻപഴം, പൗണ്ടർ പോത്തൻ എന്നിവയാണവ. എത്രമേൽ അസഹ്യമായ വിശപ്പുണ്ടെങ്കിലാണ് അന്യന്റെ ചോറെടുത്തുണു എന്ന പൊതിച്ചോറിലെ വാചകം ഹൃദയത്തിൽ പതിക്കുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഓരോ കഥയിലും നമ്മളെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്ന പലതും ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

First time reading Karoor. Picked Pothichoru after PK Rajashekharan mentioned the work in a lecture, while speaking about the condition of teachers in Kerala. Now, the concerns have changed a lot ig, but academic jobs (not talking about permanent posts) in the country itself is very precarious!
