Psychologist Hoistad defines big-picture partnering as "being together with your partner in a way that is consistently nourishing, affirming, and downright wonderful." Though sometimes a bit warm and fuzzy, her book is chock-full of anecdotes, advice, and tips that will encourage couples toward fully considering each other in everything they do. Ten "essentials" (e.g., "talk together regularly, and take turns listening") are presented; readers mainly journal and complete dialog exercises over the course of 16 weeks. Mates are encouraged to strengthen the relationship by seeing the good in each other, exploring and experimenting, breaking out of rigid roles, and deepening themselves individually. Hoistad smoothly alternates between an authoritative and a conversational tone. Like Nancy and Jim Landrum's How To Stay Married and Love It: Solving the Puzzle of a SoulMate Marriage, this is recommended.
