This book is a collection of stories from the early 1900s, I believe. Each story teaches a particular virtue, and some do it better than others. A majority of the stories really are compelling, and kept my kids’ interest, while a few of them seemed a bit contrived and simplistic. Additionally, the language used was definitely dated in certain places, which required some extra explaining from me (not altogether a bad thing!).

The flavor is definitely that of a more cultural Christianity, with the overall thrust being basically, “be good in these ways.” However, there are a few stories where elements of the biblical gospel are more clearly shared as the impetus for virtuous living.

Overall, I’m glad we read it, but it may or may not be one that I return to.
