In Anna Sewell's novel Black Beauty, a handsome black horse narrates his own life story, beginning with a carefree youth on an idyllic English farm. His happy life takes a turn when his kind owner is forced to sell him.
As he is sold from owner to owner, Black Beauty experiences a range of treatments, from gentle kindness to neglect and cruelty. He must endure the harsh realities of working life in Victorian England, pulling carriages for both wealthy families and as a cab horse in the busy city of London.
Through it all, Black Beauty's spirit remains unbroken. He shares the wisdom passed down from his mother and learns many hard lessons about both human and horse nature. His tale is ultimately a testament to endurance, hope, and the importance of kindness.

An emotional roller coaster, Ginger being my favorite character made me shed actual tears (which is highly uncommon) All I wanted was for Black Beauty, Ginger, and Merrylegs to have a good life, but no such luck. It was the saddest, most awareness raising story I have ever read. Thank goodness at least Black Beauty ended up content.
