Between the death of her mother and pushing through law school without her best friend, it's been a tough year for Becca. Needing a break from Boston, she moves to a tiny coastal North Carolina town for a relaxing summer. After bumping heads repeatedly with a local cop, she realizes her summer will be anything but quiet.
Three years after a career ending injury ruins his chance to play Major League Baseball, Gavin has a distrust of northerners and lately girls in general. He wants nothing to do with a girl who is only in town for the summer.
When the two give in to their impossible attraction, they realize that they may just have found the key to freeing themselves from the ghosts of their pasts.

Veer is the second book in Clyton Falls series and I liked it more than I liked the first one, Derailed, but mostly because I really liked Gavin in the first book and was really excited to read his story.
I kinda felt sorry for him in Derailed when Molly picked Ben over him, and when I learned what he had to go through in his past, I felt even more sorry. I just wanted to give him one big bear hug!
The story starts when Molly's friend from Boston, Becca, comes into Clayton Falls for summer. She meets Gavin really quickly but they don't hit it off. They're constantly bickering, arguing and Gavin acts a lot like a jerk in the beginning. He has some fears he can't get over that easily which results with him pushing Becca away even though they like each other. After one big mistake, he realizes what he lost and tries to make up for it and earn her trust.
The relationship between Becca and Gavin builds up slowly. They are both fighting their fears and they are afraid to jump into relationship. There is a lot of tension in the beginning and a lot of sweet moments later in the book, which makes the romance nearly perfect.
What I really liked about this book is that there was a lot of Jake, Ben's brother. I loved his character in Derailed mostly because he was an ass. In Veer, we see glimpses of his sweet and caring side. I can't wait for the third book to see his story and to really get to know his character.
If you haven't already checked out Clayton Falls series, and you like contemporary romance you should really try Derailed and Veer.
Prch Amz September 30, 2013 Finished Reading October 14, 2013
Book Rejected This story is an example of why I try to avoid anything that smacks of "Academic" and high school type books. The characters, no matter the genre, drive me nutz. Talk about S L O W reading! How do you know a book is slow & boring? Well, I started reading this October 1, 2013 & it took me TWO WEEKS to say 'The End' Why oh Why did I torture myself so much back in 2013? Why didn't I just DNF this thing?!
This was another enjoyable read in the series. There were times when I wanted to slap Becca though. However, I understood things were hard for her. I liked Gavin and I thought it was nice what his brother did at the end.
I finally get why Gavin was included in Derailed and while I didn’t care for him in that story I absolutely love him in Veer. Alyssa Rose Ivy is the best. I’m not sure why I expected any different because I absolutely love her style of writing. I can literally finish her books in a couple of hours because I can’t put them down!
Becca, Molly’s friend from college from Derailed comes to Clayton Falls to get away from a life that’s sort of crumbling down around her and she needs a break. The very first person she meets on her way is Gavin when her car dies on the highway. They don’t exactly hit it off, but since the books are from their perspectives you get to see what they’re thinking and I love that about how Ivy writes. Because even though the characters aren’t sure what the other is thinking, we as the reader know.
One of the best parts of this story though is getting to see new sides of old characters. We learn so much about Gavin in this book, where he comes from, and why he is the way he is. We also get to see another side of Jake, which is awesome. He forms this completely platonic bond with Becca and I absolutely love how protective he is of her. I’m going to skip over his drunken moment of insanity and say that their friendship was one of my favorite parts of this book.
I know I’ve been gushing about Gavin, but I really enjoyed Becca’s character to and god there were some points where I just felt so bad for her that all I wanted to do was give her a hug! She seems a little jumpy throughout the book, but when we finally find out why well who can blame her?
The Clayton Falls series is absolutely one of my favorites. I think the only character I didn’t love in this book was Matt, the law firm guy. I wanted to ring his neck every time he put his hands on Becca, what a creeper! But I love how realistic the situation was. There are some people out there who abuse the power they have and one thing about Ivy is she always puts her characters in these very real, very intense situations and I love it.
There are quite a few twists and turns and a moment or two where I want to slap Gavin and be like really? Don’t be an idiot. There were also times I wanted to slap Becca too, but that’s all part of the story and it’s seriously worth the read. This is a series I like so much I’ll be buying in paperback and trust me a book has to be super amazing for me to get a hard copy because I have like no bookshelf space.
Oh, we also get to see Molly and Ben and things that are happening in their relationship. Definitely a few surprises there! And the ending…god the ending was so beautiful that I squealed like a thirteen year old girl. I want to draw pink fluffy hearts around this story. I cannot wait until the next installment in the Clayton Falls series because I’m so in love with these books!
Possibly reading this in another time and place, I might have given it a three, but just needing something to get me through some travel time, this was a good choice for me. Was it anything mind-blowingly original? No. Was it amazingly written? No. But for what it was, it was good and it kept me entertained.
Originally from Boston and in law school to become a DA, Becca decides to spend her summer with her best friend Molly in NC working at a small town law firm. She immediately runs into local cop Gavin (who apparently had a thing for Molly in the first book of the series). The two butt heads at first and then eventually give in to their attractive. Have a miscommunication, make up, fall in love, fight, and get back together. There, I just summarized the entire book for you. You're welcome.
SEMI SPOILER ALERT - I was kind of annoyed to find yet another new adult book with sexual abuse in it. Why must they all have this?! Pick a new theme!
However, at least this one wasn’t overdone. You knew there was something in Becca’s past based on a few references to scars on her body and her need to feel safe, but other than that, she seemed like a normal well-adjusted twenty-something (who was just going through a hard patch in her life with her mother’s death and her trouble with school).
The ending was a little too perfectly wrapped up, but this was brain candy and it served its purpose.
I wanted to read a new book that I had not heard about and found Veer. Good story and not rushed but I think it could have been longer. I hope we get to see Becca and Gavin's story progress. I would have enjoyed steamier scenes. OHHH and how I cringed at his mom and sister...WTH? Totally overwhelming.
This new adult contemporary romance is the second book in The Clayton Falls Series. I really loved Derailed, the first book in the series and couldn't wait to read Veer. We were introduced to the main characters in this story, Becca and Gavin in Derailed. Becca is Molly's best friend from Law School in Boston. Gavin is the hot cop that had a thing for Molly in Derailed, but Molly's heart totally belonged to Ben. Though Gavin displayed some really thoughtful moments in Derailed, I really thought he was kind of a jerk overall, and wasn't too crazy about him. In Veer, however, I came to really love him. We only met Becca briefly in Derailed, and I so enjoyed getting to know her in Veer. Becca has had a really tough year in Boston. Her mom has passed away from cancer, her best friend is no longer there, and the combination of it all has made the past year extremely difficult for her. She didn't get the summer job she was expecting, and her grades have suffered as a result of everything that has happened. Molly has managed to help Becca get a summer job with some of the local attorneys in Clayton Falls, and needing a break and her best friend, Becca heads down there in her beloved VW Beetle, which unfortunately leaves her on the side of the road as she nears Clayton Falls. Who happens to come to her rescue but Gavin, the hottie cop, and he gives her a ride to Molly's.
They immediately size each other up, each noting the other's undeniable attractiveness. Becca is a brunette, tall, and looks like a supermodel. Gavin is also tall, muscular, and looks more like a male stripper or movie star than a cop in a small town. Their conversation starts off friendly, until Gavin mentions Becca's accent. What Becca doesn't know is that Gavin's ex-girlfriend who dumped him when he was forced to leave his baseball career due to an injury, was from Boston. Gavin has since prejudged and labeled girls from up North based on his experience with his ex, and his judgement colors his comment about her accent. Becca, not being one to hold back, comments about his accent in return. His rebuttal is that he does not have an accent, and Becca's counter argument is that he most certainly does have a "Southern Drawl." Needless to say, they don't hit it off, at all. Despite the obvious chemistry, Gavin is determined to "not like" Becca, and Becca has no problem returning his feelings.
Try as they may to stay away from each other, they can't, and they wind up sharing a night together that changes everything. Gavin's jerkdom shows through and he totally screws things up, misreading the whole situation, crushing Becca's heart. He then seeks to redeem himself and becomes one of the sweetest, most romantic guys ever. Becca, however, has a secret from her past that has left her emotionally scarred with deep-set fear and trust issues. Will Gavin's efforts be enough to not only win her her heart, but help her to push past her fear, or will the things that happen be more than these two can overcome?
I really loved both Gavin and Becca, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I was really impressed with Gavin's determination to win Becca over. The things he did for her, once he got past the jerk part, were amazing and would melt any girls heart. His patience and love was incredible. Becca was such a sweetheart. Even though she was an obvious beauty queen, she didn't act like it or even realize it. She says what she means and doesn't sugarcoat things, while at the same time manages to be really sweet and likable. My heart broke with hers over the things she went through. I really loved getting to see what was going on with Molly and Ben, and some of the others characters we got to know in Derailed. I especially liked getting to know another side of Jake, Ben's brother. I am hoping he gets his own story. Veer is an enjoyable and entertaining second installment in this series, and if you are a new adult contemporary romance fan, this is a series you should check out.
Veer is the story of Becca, Molly's best friend in Boston. She runs away to Clayton Falls after a year of heartache from the death of her mother, disappointment from the D.A office in Boston, and loneliness. Gavin is the man who's dreams were crushed after a career ending injury left him unable to play the sport he loved most, baseball. Now, living in Clayton Falls for the past three years, he's a local cop looking to settle down, but bumping into Becca was the last thing on his mind. When the two bump heads, it's obvious there cannot be anything but aggression between the two, but when they give in to their attraction, they find the key to freeing their hearts from their past.
I try to be as well behaved as I can when writing reviews for books that were less than entertaining for me, I mean regardless of the outcome, the point is to give you, the readers an understanding of WHY a certain book wasn't up to par with the books we fall in love with. Sometimes however, it's impossible.
I wasn't thrilled about reading Derailed. It seemed liked a book to give a chance to, but once I read three chapters, I was ready to call it quits. Veer, is another story entirely. I hated the book more than I did the first. Becca is probably one of the worst characters I've read this year, and Gavin, one of the clingiest men I've had the displeasure of reading about in 2013. Like for Molly in Derailed, things aren't looking so good for Becca in Boston, so she decides to spend the summer with her best friend in Clayton Falls. The first night, Becca is left stranded, but to her rescue comes local cop, Gavin intent on helping out a friend of a friend. Unfortunately for both of them things don't go over as smoothly as one would expect. They immediately bump heads making for an awkward first impression.
First off, let's discuss the relationship between Becca and Gavin. Obviously these two didn't quite hit it off with each other, but they at least try to be civil, only to bump heads every time. GAvin is being a deliberate jerk, and Becca just childish. It's funny because for about six or seven chapters Gavin doesn't understand himself why he is the way he is with her, he just 'can't help it'. It was ridiculous. He was clingy, she didn't want anything to do with him, yet she kept going back to him every single time.
The story, or rather lack their-of. I wish I could say there was a point to this book, but I found none. It was still easy to get through, but there was a lot of dialogue going on and no real sense of direction other than the characters conversating. There was a lot of butting in from the secondary characters that I didn't like, and for someone who's always 'honest', Becca didn't speak her mind when she most needed to. She ran away from everything bad that happened to her rather than deal with her problems. I also didn't like that when there was a fight, one simple kiss and an I'm sorry made up for everything. So much was left unsaid, that's not how relationships work. Smh.
I'll admit though, the only reason I continued this book was because I'm interested in reading Jake's, Wrecked. He changes a lot in this book, or so everyone around him says. I just think they don't give him enough of a chance in the first place.

It took me some time to work myself up to read VEER. I wasn't absolutely crazy about DERAILED (book 1 of the series) but I was dying to know what happens with Gavin and Becca. Every time I would pass by it on my nook I knew I just needed to dive in and read the darn thing. But I was scared. There I said it. I was scared the book and me wouldn't connect. But we did and I was so happy I finally decided to read it.
I will be the first to say that I did not like Gavin one bit in DERAILED. I thought he was a bit stalkerish and sort of creepy. But thankfully he seemed to tame his inner stalker and was actually a really good guy to read about. There may have been a sigh or two escape my mouth when reading the story. Dude is way better in VEER than he ever was in the first book. And yes, he finally redeemed himself in my eyes.
I loved Becca's character from the start. There are hints of a scared and troubled past throughout the story and as time went on I just wanted to reach in and give her a big ol' hug. We don't find out the cause of what her constant need for security is until closer to the end, but the buildup and delivery was executed perfectly. Ivy did a great job laying that all out and if made me love Becca’s character even more when all was revealed. I hurt for that girl but also thought that she was such a very strong person too.
I also adored Becca’s relationship with Jake. It just came off very natural and sisterly/brotherly. So any scenes they had together were fun for me. They hit it off from the beginning and I think it was the perfect set up for him to have his own book. He is a great guy that deserves his own story and I am so very excited that WRECKED will be based on him. He is a sweet character and I look forward to knowing even more about him, more than what we’ve already seen in DERAILED and VEER.
VEER is such a good book and I am eager to see what happens next for everyone in Clayton Falls as the series continues. I definitely recommend this read. There is some suspense, a lot of tension, and an abundance of romance. Absolutely my kind of book!
I'm not exactly sure why I picked this up especially considering my less than lukewarm reaction to its predecessor, DERAILED. Like that one, this is a standard romance. First take a girl in dire need of a break and heading on out to do something about it. Second have said girl then meets boy in a less than ideal situation. Try to shake things up a bit with a not quite love at first sight. Then have them both deny deny deny what they truly feel. Here though there's a dash of meanness on both their parts, more than I felt warranted. Except dig deeper and discover that they've both got baggage they've yet to deal with. Yada yada yada.
Overall it's pretty standard. Standard running away from what's too heavy. Standard A**hole behavior from the love interest. Even standard secondary characters, some too sweet/happy/nosy and all gung ho about whatever's coming. Strangely enough it was not the leads that piqued my curiosity... jake's turn around here was noted. With the less than stellar act he put forth in book one, here he's all understanding and brotherly... so, yes I am indeed most interested in Jake. Since I've come this far anyway, what the heck... I might as well read his story as I'm told it's his that's to be the third one.
If you enjoyed Derailed, the first novel in Alyssa Rose Ivy’s Clayton Falls Series, then you will fall in love with Veer! Told from the alternating POV’s of Gavin (the sexy cop we met in Derailed) and Becca (Molly’s best friend from law school), Veer is the perfect blend of romance and heartbreak. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in Becca’s side of the story. She was a very authentic character to me.
This is one of those stories where the author does a fantastic job of peeling back the layers of the main characters slowly to allow us to see what makes them tick. Veer is a must read for fans of New Adult Contemporary Romance novels that involve powerfully haunting pasts and steamy romances without being over the top.
I’m ecstatic about the announcement of a book three in the Clayton Falls Series titled Wrecked! Jake became a new favorite of mine in Veer.
This started a little rough for me but I eventually warmed up to the characters as we got to know them a little more. The dialogue is sometimes stiff and it results in the drama being escalated rather quickly and in a more melodramatic fashion. But that mellowed out as the story progressed. I thought the ending was a little rushed though.
This book was totally cute fun and romantic! Gavin and becca what a perfect match! The ending was super cute, and i loved the way that we got a different side of jake in this book. I might of just found a new favorite character from this series.
Alyssa I really love love love your stories. Please keep writing, and hurry up with your other two books! I can't hardly wait any longer!
Veer, the second book in the Clayton Falls series, tells the story of Gavin (the cop who fell in love with Molly in the first book) and Becca (Molly's friend from law school) this time around. While it really isn't necessary to read Derailed, the previous book in the series, I would recommend that you read just so you have some background on the town and all the characters. Set a year after the happenings of Derailed, Veer not only allows us to get to know more about Gavin and Becca, we also get to check up on the main characters we have come to love from the previous book.
What I loved most about this book is how realistic it was - the plot is concise and straight to the point with no room for irrelevant scenes in the novel. It isn't overwrought with overdone drama and nothing ias exaggerated - as a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that there are a lot people out there who would be able to relate to both Gavin and Becca and as well as their story. I also love that Veer spotlighted enough attention on the main characters - there are novels wherein the secondary characters tend to hijack the plot but that simply isn't the case for Veer - this truly is Gavin and Becca's story through and through.
Just like Molly a year ago, Becca escapes to Clayton Falls after she discovers that her life is falling apart. Becca is a character that readers will have no problem relating to - there comes a time in every person's life when he or she feels lost, after all. Alternatively, I never quite liked Gavin from the first book. I found it weird that he just fell hard for Molly for no reason whatsoever, but I'm happy to say that I came to like his character this time around. Ivy explored enough of his past to explain just why he acts the way he does, and I also enjoyed that we were privy to his thoughts and feelings through his POV.
However, I did feel like Gavin's character was a bit inconsistent at times though. As I previously mentioned, Gavin fell in love with Molly, but Veer paints him as someone who is very wary of girls. I intially deduced this certain wariness due to Molly's rejection of Gavin's love, but suddenly, we find out that the reason why he was so wary of girls - which of course ultimately includes Becca - is because of how an ex-girlfriend (a Northerner) treated him three years ago, years before he moved to Clayton Falls. This part really cofused me. If Gavin does indeed have a grudge against girls because of his ex, then why on earth did he fall in love with Molly so easily a year ago? Despite the whole 'Northerner' issue (Gavin's ex was a Northerner, same as Becca, hence his aloofness towards Becca), this whole plotline just didn't make sense and have that much substance for me.
I did enjoy reading about Becca and Gavin's relationship. Nothing felt forced - the it's pretty obvious to me that the two are meant for each other, and I love how they slowly but surely made things work out for the two of them. All in all, Veer is an easy read and I can't wait for the next installment in this series. The alternating POVs was a nice touch, and I really got to know both main characters because of it.
It was so nice to go back to Clayton Falls and “see” all of Alyssa’s characters again. Veer tells the story of Gavin, who was trying to date Molly in Derailed, and Becca, Molly’s friend from law school who has a pretty dark and troubled past. While not as romantic and “fairy tale-like” as Derailed where the girl rediscovers the love she left behind, Gavin & Becca’s story was more realistic to me and I loved that about Veer. You can’t deny the attraction these to have for each other, yet they’re very guarded, the guy is pretty jaded from past relationships and the girl is plagued with trust issues and a heart-breaking secret of her own. You get to see these two characters open up their hearts to true love and come to terms with the parts of their lives they’ve been avoiding.
Becca is a pretty cool character. Not one to hold her tongue, I liked that she challenged Gavin in almost everything he did and said. She was also game for anything the Clayton Falls gang was doing and quickly became friends with everyone. She’s also very smart and goal-oriented, despite having a lot of grief and stress to deal with after the loss of her mother. Even though she goes to Clayton Falls to get away from everything, she still opts to work for a local law firm for the summer and even though it’s not an ideal situation, she does the job well and I love how great she handles that area. She’s a pretty tough character to me and I loved that about her.
Gavin wasn’t exactly my favorite character in Derailed. He came on a little too strong for me, but I could see it was only because he’s a man who knows what he wants and does what it takes to get it. That aspect definitely shows in Veer. He’s not a creep, but he does act like a jerk sometimes, not your typical swoon-worthy guy, but he still is in his own right. After a pretty cruel past relationship and his failed attempt at winning over Molly, it’s not hard to see why he is the way that he is. He slowly starts to come out of his shell though and you get to see the real Gavin and I really learned to love him. If anything, he’s definitely a dedicated guy and I did love those smexy moments.
You also get to see a lot of the Clayton Falls gang like Molly, Ben, and Jake, which I loved. It was nice to see how Molly & Ben’s relationship is nowadays and Jake is always a fun character to read about, he definitely adds life and entertainment to each scene that he’s in. There were some comical moments with Molly that had me cracking up (i.e. Gilmore Girls and a bathroom scene) that I honestly loved. I’m also a big fan of novels two in dual POVs, and in Veer you get to see both Becca and Gavin’s POVs, which was great.
Veer is an excellent companion novel to the Clayton Falls series and a fantastic novel in its own right. I have to give it to Alyssa, she knows how to write a killer ending. Just like with Derailed, the ending to Veer left me all cheesy and tingly inside from the sheer awesomeness of it. It’s one of those scenes you can’t help but gush over! If you’ve enjoyed Derailed you’ll definitely want to give Veer a try. I’m super excited and eagerly waiting for Wrecked, the third book in the series, which tells the story of Jake (he finally gets a love interest).
3.5 stars Read and reviewed as part of the Veer tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours.
Veer is a cute romance story about Becca, a law student from Boston and Gavin, a police officer living in Clayton Falls.
Becca is fiercely independent after growing up with just her mum after her dad abandoned them. Recently she’s nursed her sick mum, right up to her death from cancer. Now she’s all alone and feeling a little lost.
Gavin is an ex-baseball player turned police officer. His career ended after an injury. His previous relationship broke up at the same time; his girlfriend was fickle and wanted the fame and lifestyle more than she wanted him. He’s now wary of starting a relationship and finding love again.
Becca is Molly’s best friend. Molly is the main character in the first Clayton Falls book, Derailed. Gavin is the guy who liked Molly in Derailed, making a bit of a love triangle between Molly, Ben and himself.
I liked Gavin. He acted like an arse towards Becca a couple of times, due to feeling he needed to protect himself from history repeating, but mostly he was a perfect gentleman towards her. He treated her right and gave her time and space when she needed it.
I thought Becca blew hot and cold. One minute she was all in to their relationship and the next she was backing right off and running away. I get that she’d seen things go bad for her parents and she had no previous relationship experience but it did make me feel frustrated with her. Plus as we later learn she’d had something traumatic happen in her past, maybe that made her wary too.
I liked the fact that it was set in a small town and that meant that news travelled fast and everyone knew everyone else’s business. It meant that there was always someone who could talk sense in to Gavin and Becca. There was always someone on their side rooting for them to sort things out.
I liked the cast of supporting characters but Matt Morgan not so much! I liked that we got to see how Molly and Ben were getting on, since the events in Veer happened after the events in Derailed. I loved Kelly, she just tells it like it is and has Tom well trained in the art of being a good husband! I liked Jake and look forward to reading his story. I also really liked Gail, she’s a very cool older lady who always has pearls of wisdom and life experience to share.
There were a couple of things that I felt were left unresolved. One was Becca’s dad’s phone message. Maybe the point of her not calling him back was that she didn’t need him in her life and that was that. I just expected there to be more in that. The second one was the whole conversation Becca had with Gavin’s mum, and then her subsequent argument with Gavin. She never explained to him after they made up what she was feeling. I feel like they should have talked about that before moving on to try for their happy ever after.
In general though, I did enjoy reading Veer. It was a sweet love story about 2 people who needed someone in their life who was going to be a constant presence, since both characters had had too much of a change happen to them. I definitely recommend that you read it.
I love romance. I love it. It makes me so happy and I absolutely love reading it. However, when I say that I love romance, I also should mention that I don't expect great things from it. So when I had the chance to read Veer by Alyssa Rose Ivy I was pretty excited. Initially I thought Veer was just your typical adult romance novel. However, I later discovered that it fell into the new adult category. I was a bit shy of this at first because I have had fairly bad experiences with the new adult Phenomena.
In saying that,
I really enjoyed Veer. I thought it was a pretty good novel. I will say I think it's more adult romance than new adult but that's just my opinion. I was surprised with how much I did like Veer, because a few weeks ago I read Derailed by Ivy and I was not impressed.
The story begins with the meeting of the two protagonists, Becca and Gavin. This is where I chuckle because these two DID not get along! At all. It was down right hostile. And as a reader you can't help but laugh at this, because you know it has to work out. These two are meant for each other. Things slowly move along and before you know it the two are in love and living happily ever after.
The things that I liked the most about Veer were the characters and the relationships they had with one another. I really liked the relationship between Becca and Jake. They were just friends and could hang out and that was it. What kind of annoyed me was that sometimes Becca was a total jerk to Jake. She would say things to him and I would be like, "where did that come from?" It was vaguely suggested in the book that Jake wasn't a good guy or he had a shady past, but we saw none of that in Veer. He seemed like a sweet caring friend. So when Becca would treat him badly, I got annoyed. Becca and Gavin's relationship was sweet. That's basically all I can say about it. They were so darn cute. They hit some rough patches (which has to happen in most romance novels), but they worked through them. I liked seeing their relationship evolve.
While the writing in Veer wasn't stellar, it also wasn't bad. As I mentioned before I read another of Alyssa Rose Ivy's novels, one that was written before this one and I thought it was terrible. So bad I thought I was going to hate this one as well. But I was surprised to see how much her writing had matured from book one to book two. I think that with every book that Ivy writes her skills as an author are going to get better, and I think that's very exciting.
Overall, I enjoyed Veer for it's romance and the characters. I really liked seeing the author grow as a writer and I look forward to future books from her.
I received Veer in return for an honest review from the author. Over the last year life hasn't been easy for Becca her mother has passed away, her best friend moved away and school has been a struggle. Needing to escape the city Becca heads to Clayton Falls, to spend the summer with her best friend Molly. Gavin used to play minor league baseball but has signed his contract to go pro until an injury ended his career forever. Now he’s reinvented himself as a local cop in Clayton Falls it’s been three years since his last serious relationship. Before she can even make it into town her old VW bug dies on the dark highway leaving her stranded.
However she can’t get cell service to call Molly for help, when a stranger stops and knocks on her window. Becca isn’t thrilled by the thought of being stranded with a strange man knocking on her door but when he flashes her his badge she decides to open the door. He offers her a ride even admitting he’s a friend of Molly’s which is all the pushing she needs. Even though it’s a quick drive the tension in the SUV is anything but pleasant after a few sharp words are said by both.
Since Gavin is friends with Molly it’s impossible for them to avoid each other much less for the whole summer. Both Gavin and Becca can’t deny the attraction to each other so it’s only inevitable that they bump into each other several times. One drunken night ends in an awkward morning for both of them where Gavin tells Becca it’s a mistake let’s forget it happened. Furious about the brush off Becca heads home intent on avoiding Gavin the rest of the summer and ends up avoid everyone. Gavin having realized that their night was more than a one night stand sets out to make it up to Becca and win her heart. However Becca has a dark past will it ruin their chance for happiness?
Veer is the second book in the Clayton Falls series. I have so much love for this series and Veer doesn't disappoint if anything I love it more than Derailed. I love Becca she’s had a rough life but she’s done her best to not let it ruin her life if anything it’s made her more driven. Becca is the kind of girl you can’t help relating to, you want to be there for her when things get tough and cheer her own. I really liked Gavin in Derailed I felt bad for him after everything that happened in the first book so when I learned Veer was his story I was super excited. The story is beautifully written taken from both Becca and Gavin’s point of view giving a unique perspective of each character. I love the way the author creates a realistic story that feels like your right with the characters. I also love that these are clean romances so anyone teenager or adult will enjoy them. Clayton Falls is a amazing series I suggest everyone should read at least once.
Veer is the second book in the Clayton Falls Series and it is the only book that I have read in the series, which I found easy to read as a standalone. It was an emotional contemporary romance where both characters need to deal with their insecurities so that they can move on and improve their lives.
Becca’s car broke down on the side of the road as she is heading to Clayton Falls to spend time with her friend Molly and to start a summer job at a law firm until college begins again. Gavin stops to offer his assistance and tries to talk Becca into accepting a lift to her friend’s house. Becca is a bit reluctant at first, but decides to take the chance and accept his help. While they are travelling to Molly’s, the sparks begin to fly, but not in a good way. They end up having an argument over the smallest thing! It is amusing to watch them bicker and I was laughing out loud about their fight! They seem to have that love/hate relationship happening as there are other times that they argue as well, much to the dismay of their friends. It was great to see that this romance was not love at first sight and that they had a few things to work out before they could even think about having a relationship.
I didn't really like Gavin in the beginning as he was a real jerk! He was picking fights with Becca for no good reason and did something terrible to her too. The one thing I wished that did happen was Jake's fist landing on his face! He needed the sense knocked out of him, but it didn't connect. He improved after this and became the perfect gentleman and did lots of things that made me go awww..... He stepped up and pushed away his fears to become the person he should be.
Becca has had a lot to deal with in the past few months and luck is not on her side. She has a beautiful soul and a big heart. She accepted the job in Clayton Falls so she could get away from her life in Boston for a while, but she finds it a little overwhelming in Clayton Falls as everyone is overly friendly toward her. She doesn't understand the people in this small town, but is able to push her feelings aside to do the best she can.
Overall I really did enjoy the story it was a bit of a rocky journey but it was nice in the end. Alyssa did a beautiful job at telling both Becca and Gavin's story and I'm glad things ended the way they did. I will have to go back and read the first book in the series which is Molly’s book because I think Gavin is in that one too. It would be interesting to see what he was like with her.

Rating Clarification: 3 / 5
Like DERAILED, VEER is another sweet, short love story. To be completely honest, compared to the many YA/NA romances out there, it’s not very impressionable, but overall, it’s still a relatively enjoyable and easy read!
One of the best parts of the book, like its predecessor, is its “readability”: the language flows easily, the characters are likable, and the plot moves quickly, so you’re never bored. When I was reading the series, I found that I could easily finish the book within one or two sittings, perfect for the weekend-type of read. In fact, for a romancey type of story, there's also a bit of everything: cute scenes, HOT scenes, frustrating scenes, heartbreaking scenes, etc. Of course, the ending is cheesy, but cute and fuzzy (:
Even though VEER is more of a companion novel, it also features some of its old characters, and I loved that we could see some of our old beloved characters develop more, as well as seeing new sides of other characters. Gavin, the love interest in this book, seemed seriously like a jerk in the previous book, but he eventually develops into a pretty sweet guy. Jake, Ben's brother, also shows a sweeter side, which I found a bit surprising, and he's probably the main reason I'm considering reading the third book WRECKED. The type of relationship Gavin and Becca share is also pretty different from Molly and Ben's - there's more snark, rather than the high-school sweetheart approach, which of course led to a different but equally as romantic and sweet storyline.
However, like its predecessor, VEER also suffers from some predictability issues (apart from one twist involving Molly, though o____o). You can tell who is going to end up with who in the end, and you pretty much know there is a happy ending. Again, it's cheesy, but it would appeal to many romance readers.
Overall though, VEER was another short and easy read, and a great continuation of the Clayton Falls saga. Again, fans of YA and NA romance alike would probably enjoy this book, especially if you're looking for a weekend or beach read. If you haven't read the first book though, I highly suggest trying it out and reading it - it's free on both Amazon & Smashwords!
FTC Disclosure: I received an eARC of this book for the blog tour from the author. This did not affect my opinion of the book. No monetary transaction took place. Thanks!
Veer starts off a few months after Derailed left off with Molly and Ben, and in Veer we are seeing Becca's story come to life, she is Molly's best friend from law school that you will remember from the first book. The book starts off with Becca driving to Clayton Falls for the summer to spend time with Molly, and on the way there, her car stalls and will not start, and she is on the side of a long road by herself, and her cell phone has no signal. Someone happens to be driving by, and it turns out that it is Gavin, and he lets her know that he is a police officer, and convinces her that he will take her in to town to Molly's house, and during the drive she gets to see some of his charming personality (sarcasm?.....ABSOLUTELY!).
Becca decides to spend the summer with Molly in Clayton Falls and work at the local law offices as unfortunately her Mother has passed away after a long illness, and she has no other family, and Molly is the closest friend that she has. She is not sure if coming to town is the best thing after a few days as her first week has left not the greatest of impressions on her as far as the people around town, but she does decide to stay for the remainder of the summer anyways.
She easily makes friends with Molly's other friends in town, especially Jake (who is Ben's brother) who she is able to hang out with and watch movies and stuff. The only person that she is not able to make friends with easily is Gavin, and she is unsure as to why, it seems that every time they try to have a conversation it turns in to an argument of some sort.
The same things that I loved about book #1 were brought over in to this novel as well, I got that Nora Roberts feel again, but with more realistic histories with the characters that they have to try and work through. As the summer goes on, you get to see how Becca grows, and also you get to see the relationship between her and Gavin change slowly but surely, and it is a wonderful journey.
So if I have not made it clear already, this series is a smash for me, and I am so excited to see what happens in book #3. Absolute 5/5 and if you are a fan of the new adult genre, or even contemporary romance, this is a series that is not to be missed, I stayed up all night reading these books, I started at about 10 PM and thought I would just get them started, and did not go to bed till the next morning when I was finished with both of them.
I really enjoyed Derailed, the first book in this series, but I honestly couldn't stand Gavin. When I heard this was his book, I was intrigued, but also a bit nervous going into it. I really wanted to know more about Becca though, and I was hoping that Gavin could redeem himself in my eyes. It took a while, but he totally did. And I loved Becca. The characters are my favorite part of this series. Not just the ones that the book focuses on, but all of the secondary characters too. Alyssa Rose Ivy makes you really fall for the characters and care what happens to them.
Becca was a character that took a bit to get used to, but I really love her as I got to know her better. She really kind of stays in her own shell and it takes a lot to start breaking that down. As we find out why it makes a lot of sense why she acts the way she does. The only thing that I was really bothered by, was how she was constantly trying to push Gavin away. Almost trying to make him not want to be around her. She could be really bitchy, but I suppose I might act the same in her situation too. She really had a lot of growth through this book though, and I respected her a lot for really caring about her career and wanting to make sure that she completed school and worked toward the career she has been dreaming about. No matter what came her way, that was always the most important thing for her.
Gavin is a tough one for me. I never thought that I could like him. He was such an arrogant, pushy jerk in Derailed and was still a total douche in the beginning of this, but once we start to discover things about his past, you kind of understand him more. Don't get me wrong, he is still a bit too straight forward and pushy, and boy does he do a few really stupid things. Really though, underneath all of that he is just as broken and insecure as Becca is. He is actually super sweet, charming, and romantic. By the end of this book he totally made my swoon-worthy fictional guys list!
This book had all of the things that make a contemporary great to read. It had romance, drama, misunderstandings, more romance, and most of all, character growth. I loved watching Gavin and Becca get to know each other and uncover each others pasts as they grow to trust each other more. Of course there is heartbreak and plenty of moments that make you laugh too. Overall, the writing was great and I loved this. I really enjoyed Becca and Gavins story and I can't wait for Wrecked to get Jake's story!!
The second book in the Clayton Falls series follows Becca and Gavin who are friends of Molly, the main character in the first book. It is a companion novel so there won't be spoilers but reading Derailed first will increase the reading experience. :-D Becca is headed to Clayton Falls to visit Molly and work at a local law firm. On her way into town her car breaks down and police man Gavin stops to help her. Gavin isn't so hot for city girls and they get off to a really bad start. Lots of fighting but also lots of hot sexual tension.
I loved Gavin in the first book and was very excited to hear he would get his own story. But he was a big jerk at first and so rude to Becca. I was happy that this book has dual POVs so we do understand his crazy reasoning and know how he truly feels. After his injury taking him away from baseball his old girlfriend left him and he is scared to open his heart. Becca does eventually bring back out his sweet and protective side. He works really hard to make things up to Becca.
Becca, similar to Molly in the first book, is dealing with a really tragic past. Her mom recently died and she is having a hard time moving on. She doesn't want to let Gavin in but he is persistent and they begin falling for each other. Lots of romantic dates and a few hot scenes. I loved it once they finally began to give each other a real chance. As Molly is only in town temporarily, Gavin and Becca have to decided what sacrifices they should make for each other. Molly and Ben, from the first book, make appearances and Ben's brother Jake is back. I love Jake and was so glad he was such a good friend to Becca. I am super excited that his story is next! Great new adult romance series about getting over your past and learning to trust and fall in love again!
--- "There was a ticket on the windshield--perfect. Didn't it count for anything that I left it there because I was having sex with one of their officers?"
"She hesitated, and I repeated "please stay" over and over in my head. I had an irrational need to spend time with her. I wasn't ready to let her go yet." ---
