Clint Ryan #5

Shadow of the Grizzly

Rate this book
In this western , Martin has produced a land-locked, Old West version of Peter Benchley's Jaws . Chased from its habitat among California's giant redwoods, a mammoth grizzly worshiped as a bear god by the local Indians goes on a rampage. When the son of the Indians' chief is killed by the animal, the tribe seeks out Clint Ryan to hunt it down. Although he demurs at first, circumstances force him to join both Indians and other hunters and to go after the bear. With tight plotting, Martin manages to keep the reader's attention, and series fans should not be disappointed.

Larry Martin - Clint Ryan Western Bk 5 - Shadow of the Grizzly - Reviewed 6/14/19
Building a ranch while surviving land grabbers and a child murdering Grizzly Bear!

While working on his ranch with his friends that work with him, he is visited by some trappers that decided that Clint has more than he needs and won’t share. So, they decided to take it all from him and make it theirs. The Local Yocuts have one of their children killed by a grizzly bear that is hurt by the trappers. Their belief is the griz is worshipped and they can’t kill it, so they ask that Clint do it for them. Clint thinks long and hard and decides that this one time he needs to put the ranch first, so he declines. And the problems begin!!

What did I like? I truly enjoy reading books written by this author. They are well written and researched with such important values that we need to remember. In every book, the West comes alive and I feel like I am back during that time.

What will you like? Well written and the research is incredible. The action is detailed and mindboggling with each showing more research to bring you right to the era. The characters are unique and believable. Some are the downright ugly type of people that you will love to hate. Be sure to set aside time for this one as you will not be able to put it down.

Another good book, I think I probably enjoyed the first 4 a little more than this one but in saying that, it still was a good western read. It’s books like these that I enjoy especially when they do bring in some true history throughout the book. It makes it a fun way of learning some history and become so intriguing that I will look into other books to compound on it.

Best one yet!

Years ago I travelled that area on modern roads, climbed that massive rock via a stairway, but was no less awed by the arboreal giants than was Clint.
Martin reached into my gut with this one.

This series just keeps getting better

Another great adventure in set in early California. Fast paced and with more twists and turns then a race course.

I am not a huge fan of Westerns, but Shadow of the Grizzly is one I would revisit. While slow to kick off the read is quite catching once gotten into. Mr. Martin writes with a style all his own, differing from other such writers in the same genre. Probably the best thing he did with the story was leap-frogging (By which I mean switch between different points or happenings in the story instead of finishing one part out in a long stretch). The charecters are also enjoyable, whether good or evil one may take their pick. Often times you can guess what the outcome of certain things will be, but, for reasons I have already stated, that is in no wise a con. The only thing I might not have liked were certain veiws of one of the charecters toward the very end of the book, but since this is not a review containing spoilers I shan't elaborate. A slow start, an engaging middle, and an almost totaly satisfactory ending make this book one to be read indeed. Unless of course, you have a deep-rooted hatred for Westerns.

I think the story is a little slow starting, but it kept me going after a while. There's killing involved, by bear and by people, but it's not too graphic. There's a lot of description of the area, meadows, trees, etc. If you're not into that, it's easy to skip over. I enjoyed his description of the redwoods. It must have been quite a time with the gold rush, outlaws, wild animals.
