“Some moments are like bruises...Dark and deep and so malformed that even once the color fades back to normal, when the blood flattens and the bump erodes and you begin to recognize the skin as yours again, you remember the moment it happened. That unexpected pain. And you do your best to avoid it forevermore.”
In the second installment of the SPELLSPINNERS saga, Lily’s worldview is rocked by fear, mistrust, and heartbreak, as she deals with the fallout from the night of her enchantment.
Someone powerful is determined to keep her and Logan apart. But who? And why?
As the covens prepare to do battle in the Solstice Stones, the lines between good and evil, dark and light, begin to blur. Allegiances are called into question. Trust is broken. And all Lily knows may just be an illusion.
Will the star-crossed lovers unearth the seeds of betrayal before it’s too late? Or will the witches and warlocks of Melas County be forced to say goodbye to their magic—and any chance of reconciliation between the covens—for good?
In THE GLEANING, nothing is as it seems. And Lily and Logan will have to tread carefully if they hope to uncover the truth in time to save their love and break the curse.

I love the format of these books, they truly live up to their name of "active fiction" and Heidi Kling does an amazing job working within this format. The Gleaning is the follow up to Witch's Brew in this new format of action fiction serialized books. For me, it gives me a bit of what it must have been like for people who read the serialized fiction in the 1900s in the magazines and stuff, where they only got about a chapter at a time and then had to wait for the next issue to see what happened next. Heidi has done a great job of breaking down the story into segments that have their own story arcs, but yet the story flows from one book to the next seamlessly.
This time around, I chose path two in the story, I need to go back and read through the other paths I haven't read, It'll be a fun exercise to do before book 3 comes out, and I chose it partially because I think it's the path most readers wouldn't choose and because it's the path I hoped I'd choose in her situation.
The Gleaning is about Lily's first gleaning, the big event that Lily has been working towards her whole life that could also be the start of something that could change the social order of things in her witch's community. A LOT happens in this segment of the story, a lot is revealed, Lily will learn betrayal first hand and we'll get a little more from her Grandmother's diary.
If you're a reader who loves a story full of action, mystery and a bit of romance, this is the series for you. Heidi has weaved an amazing story that gives the reader exactly what they want!
It’s book 2 in the Spellspinners series and it’s finally time for the event which the witches and warlocks have been prepared for their whole lives: The Gleaning.
This book picks up immediately at the point in which the first one left off and we get to see what happens to Lily and Logan after Lily has caught Logan with her doppelganger. The story continues with both covens preparing for the fight against each other. Meanwhile, Lily and Logan are trying to figure out who tried to sabotage their relationship. As if that wasn’t enough, Lily meets another guy who says that he is the Rognaithe. As you can see, there are quite a lot of things happening, especially when considering the length of the book. Secrets are revealed and we get to know more about the characters we met in the first book, even the more minor ones.
The actual ‘Gleaning’ was my favourite part of this book. I loved the author’s description of the surroundings - the atmosphere that was created was a truly magical one. I was on edge throughout the whole scene, and I loved the way it ended. Of course, I won’t give any details about the ending, but I have to say that it was such a cliffhanger, which really leaves me in anticipation for the next book in this series.
As with the first book, its format is what really sets it apart from all the other books of its genre. I found the ‘choose your path’ idea to be really great since I got to decide which path I wanted the characters to take at certain points in the book. Also, as a bonus, when you finish the book you can go back and choose another path to relive the story with different decisions and different paths taken.
Overall, this book was a great continuation to this series and I can’t wait for the author to release the next book! If you liked ‘The Witch’s Brew’, then you should definitely read this one, and if you haven’t, then you’ve just found a great new series to read.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank Heidi R. Kling, author of Witch's Brew for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.
OH.MY.GOD, it's freakishly awesome and I'm sure that ya all would love it too. The story picks up in this sequel just from the point where book 1 ended in a painful cliff-hanger. This sequel is much more great than book 1, now you can imagine how much awesomeness this sequel has!
This book again bring back the readers to the fantasy world where the witches and warlocks are enemies and we land in the middle of the Stones where they suck up each other's magic to survive.
There is betrayals, test of loyalties, mistrusts and breaking of hearts as well as shattering of trusts and beliefs but we are given an ample amount of cute and adorable true romance which lightens the darkness present in this book.
Lily and Logan are much more developed and flourished in this sequel which was a great treat and I loved how much their love and trust for each other has strengthened but still they had to pass through tough choices and had to keep their trust on each other but sadly the situation is straining their trust.
The revelations of dark secrets and the glimpses of the past happenings really spiced up the story and the power-packed action scenes made it that much more intriguing.
all in all a great read and totally recommended for ya all and I bet you won't regret picking up this book. It'a a total page turner and you'll have a hard time in putting it down before knowing the end which the author kept well hidden till the end leaving the readers with the eerie suspense and mystery all through out the book.

THE GLEANING by Heidi R. Kling is the second book in the Spellspinners of Melas County, a pretty awesome e-book series that is choose-you-own-adventure. Yeah, I KNOW. It’s full of witchy goodness, with witches and warlocks basically hating on each other and a prophecy about a chosen one who is supposed to bring the two groups back from the depths of their fear and loathing of each other. THE GLEANING is literally about the Gleaning, a gathering/event whereby a witch and a warlock battle each other to steal the other’s magic and life force. (Read book number 1, WITCH’S BREW, to get the full picture, friends!) And wouldn’t you know it: our two main characters–the star-crossed lovahs, Lily and Logan–are chosen to do battle against one another. But wouldn’t you know it TWICE that all is not as it seems.
Maybe I’ll give you guys a little background first: Lily is a witch. Logan is a warlock. They aren’t supposed to associate with each other. Warlocks in Heidi R. Kling‘s series think that witches are evil, conniving vixens bent on stealing the warlocks’ magic. The witches think the warlocks are…well, basically ditto. Lily and Logan are kind of exceptional in their own ways, and the witches believe that Logan might be this chosen one everyone is all gaga over. There’s all kinds of witchy shenanigans going on, power plays by both the ladies and gents, and hanging over the whole thing is the relationship between Lily and Logan. Fraught, sexy, dangerous, and full of secrets. Woot!
THE GLEANING picks up with Lily and Logan a little bit at odds over some pot-stirring that took place at the end of WITCH’S BREW courtesy of Lily’s doppleganger. (Yeah. She has one of those, and she likes to cause trouble.) This doesn’t do anyone any favors, because the Gleaning itself is just around the corner, and both the witches and warlocks look at is as a display of power, of one group being better and stronger than the other. The action in THE GLEANING is pretty good, although I thought the stuff that went down in WITCH’S BREW was a bit more…MORE. That’s not to say that big things don’t happen, because they do. But something about book 1 seemed a little more gripping.
Further complicating things is the beginnings of a triangle. Jude, another warlock who is basically a big jerkface (so far), starts playing mind games with Lily and trying to worm his way into her thoughts, not only causing her to be confused about her feelings for Logan, but also question Logan’s being the chosen one. I’m interested in him for sure, and I’m feeling a little bit like I could get burnt out by Logan and Lily’s meant-to-be-ness, and Jude certainly brings the smoldery, douchey, danger.
Overall, I felt like THE GLEANING was good, but not great. The biggest problem for me? It was…short. I felt like there was hardly much time for things to happen. Part of me wishes that this series, instead of being 10 books long was something more like 3 or 4, cramming more juicy stuff into fewer books. It would be a little easier for me to keep track of what’s going on and would keep things from being so spread out. Sometimes things seem a little too stretched out or something. And choosing the different paths in this book wasn’t as satisfying in terms of plot. It’s still fun, but wasn’t as obviously different paths.
All that being said, I’m still invested in the story, and intrigued by the prophecy and the mythology and Lily and Logan. There’s 8 books left! The only way things can go from here is straight to crazytown, which I LIVE there, so I like the sound of that very much.
“A straight path never leads anywhere except to the objective.”
Now, I know that this particular quote is a big ball of hidden meanings and Yoda-esq wisdom, but it is literally the only thing I could think about when reading “The Gleaning.”
Let me take a step back and explain (for those of you that find my train of thought irritatingly abstract.) Every journey/story has a point A and a point B (aka beginning and end.) You can choose to walk a straight line between the two. Remain comfortable in your predictable surroundings, or you can choose to veer off the path. This is called choosing your own adventure. Sure, it may be harder. The challenges you face may leave permanent marks on your body and soul, but they also give you character. Build strength. Provide you with unconventional experience.
Books are wonderful examples of choosing to zig while the rest of the world zags. (Would you like an example? Ok. Lord of the Rings. Big whopping zig. Divergent. Ziggity zam. Percy Jackson. *insert witty zig variation*) But at the end of the day, the path the characters take in these books are still chosen by someone else. The author.
Until now.
Heidi R. Kling broke convention so that YOU could too. She may have written the book, but she gave the reader a chance to veer off the path. Lead HER characters straight into the fire, or opt for the surrounding forest instead. And let me tell you…it’s refreshing to finally have a say.
"Someone powerful is determined to keep her and Logan apart. But who?
And Lily and Logan will have to tread carefully if they hope to uncover the truth in time to save their love and break the curse."
Last year I read “Witch’s Brew” the first book in Kling’s “Spellspinners” series and suffice it to say…I was impressed. And while I am still stunned into aww-filled silence by Kling’s ability to pen multiple delivery methods for one story, I did find myself upset by the barefaced lack of forward movement in “The Gleaning.”
I’m not implying the novel fell into a bottomless pit and never recovered, but I did find myself wishing for a little less conversation and a little more action (if you know what I mean.) To be blunt: the constant need to “talk about” plans instead of “acting on them” made me want to drop-kick’ a kitten. It wasn’t until the last two or so chapters that I felt the momentum pick-up, but at that point (regardless of it’s monumental ending which had me drop-jawed) it was almost too late.
The characters however held strong and solid. Storming a magic-induced drama path through a truly unique plot. Add a dash of epic love and heart-wrenching betrayal and the final product (though slow at times) is a solid score for paranormal interactive fiction. If I had a stamp…it would say “APPROVED.”
It’s “Choose Your Own Adventure” for a new generation, and I LOVE it!
Happy Reading my fellow Kindle-ites and remember: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke
So disappointed in this specific book, but not overall; this will be a challenging review to write. The first book was so good and this second book left me feeling frustrated. I now have soo many more questions and seriously only one answer from all my questions in the first book. I know who the doppleganger is and that is it. The first book was still wonderful enough that I will wish to continue reading the series, so obviously the author knows what she is doing and has done something correct to evoke those feelings. This book just feels like a filler book, necessary but not your favorite. But seriously, I can handle one book like this, but the rest of the series must be on the top of its game from here on out to keep driving the plot and characters (which I honestly believe can be done).
My major complaint is that this book is not nearly as interactive as the frist book and it is so very short in length (I read the entire book, including all versions, in less that 3 hours). I started reading it, I got one option to chose from and then it was over. I was really expecting and looking forward to more twists and bends and options. Being the nerd that I am, I like toread all of the versions of the book; I like the multiple version because it allows you to learn a lot of things about the characters what are not included in every version. It makes things clear and you can actually see an almost full picture. This book just seems to feel like it was lacking that aspect. I felts like The Gleaning was good, but not great. The length of the book was really a major downfall, it was just so short and I just feel like nothing was able to build-up and actually happen. It is almost like this book should have been part of the first book or part of the third book, but not its own entity. The ending is not nearly as surprising nor as climatic as the first book.
I also didn't feel like any of the characters progressed as much as they should have. There is still so much mystery about all the major players (old and now new) and even the story of Lilly's distant grandmother, Rose, and her diary left much to be desired for. Although Rose's memories prove to be useful, they don't leave you feeling complete and I am not sure if there is more use from the diaries or not. It wasn't made clear. I understand wanting to keep the mystery going to drive the story and keeping the reading intrigued, however, I have learned very very little and I have no point of reference to try and use what I have learned.
I still love the magic aspect of the story. It is intense and fascinating. Also, the love story between Lilly and Logan becomes steamier and you can feel that they actually have a bond; now if only people would stop trying to interfere with them :). I personally enjoy love stories that do not involve a love triangle so I am not sure what Jude is going for and if I will end up enjoying his character or not. Power obviously, but I need to see what Jude does with his further actions and what he is trying to get out of everything. Still don't know what is going on with Jacob and his private company. I have no idea why every one is seems so obsessed with the charm necklaces at the end of the book. To sum it up, I still don't know what is going with anything.... So we will see. I am excited to see what will happen next and how the story will progress.
I absolutely loved Witch's Brew, the first installment of the Spellspinners of Melas County, so I was extremely excited to get the chance to read The Gleaning, and I was not disappointed!
Witch's Brew left off at a crazy cliffhanger...so I was definitely looking forward to jumping right into The Gleaning, and it takes off right where the first part left off. The reviewers copy I received wasn't interactive yet, so I got to read both of the main paths for the book, and I have to say that they were both pretty great...although I definitely had one that I preferred. I won't tell you which though because that might influence your decision...but no matter what decision you make for Lily and Logan...you won't be disappointed! I do suggest that you try them both out though...just to see what you might have missed. ;)
As for the story itself, it was awesome! In this one we finally get the the Gleaning itself where the Daughters of the Light and the Sons of Darkness face off...and boy is it intense! We see what finally happens during the Gleaning, and before that we get some moments between Logan and Lily! :D I could definitely do with more of those, but I was satisfied with the ones I got...especially in my preferred version of the story. ;D
We get to learn more about Logan's past in this one, and we get to read some more of Lily's great-great grandmother Rose's Diary. Slowly, the mysteries of the Rognaithe prophecy are coming into place, and we're starting to get to see how Logan and Lily fit into it all. I love how Heidi R. Kling has started to reveal everything while also maintaining a lot of mystery for us...we know as much as Logan and Lily do, so we have to slowly piece it all together as they do. I've also definitely enjoyed getting to see Lily and Logan together...I just love them. I'm a total sucker for forbidden romances, and these two definitely have one.
I just have to mention interactive stories themselves in this review, and I have to say that I love them! I'm so glad that Coliloquy and their fabulous authors are putting these together for us. I don't think I ever read any Choose Your Path books, but I remember playing games that had it...mostly Oregon Trail. I always loved the whole decision part, and I think it's fantastic that we get to experience it through these books. :D We get to help choose how Lily and Logan's story turns out, and if you want, you get to see how things could've been different. I just think it's a fantastic idea, and I like that it gives us readers a little bit of power in the story. :D
I absolutely loved this book, and I can't wait to see what will happen with Lily and Logan next! I recommend The Gleaning and this series to anyone who loves magic, and to anyone who loves a forbidden romance. I'd also definitely suggest it to anyone who wants to try out an interactive story, and you can always check out each option and see how the story differs with the choice you make. :D
I would like the thank the author for offering me a copy of The Gleaning in exchange for an honest review
The Gleaning starts off right where Witch's Brew left us... and I love it when a story jumps right back into the action without missing a beat. I had so many questions about the curse, the warlocks, doppelgangers, and well just about everything by the end of book 1 that I was happy to be able to start the second book right away!
After reading book 1 I had a better idea of what to expect with the choose your own adventure part of this series, and although I'm personally not a huge fan of this type of book anymore, I made myself look past it and just enjoy the path I chose at the time. Even if you don't like having the choice between two paths in a story (personally I get too curious about the other one before I can commit to a choice) this series is still definitely worth a read.
I enjoyed that The Gleaning was full of action and it moved along at a quick pace while still answering some of my questions about the past. I loved getting some of the back story on the amulets, and especially Logan's childhood. I feel like I got more insight into Logan, Lily, and the coven that just hooked me even further into the story. I loved that everyone wasn't necessarily what they seemed at first (and have to admit that I guessed a few of the characters would turn out the way they did). I still enjoy a good villain in a story, and Jacob made me hate/love him even more in this story with his evil ways.
We finally get to find out the mystery behind The Gleaning in this book, and I think that it was a really unique twist on the usual good vs. evil story line. Lily grew on me in book 2 and I didn't find myself quite as annoyed with some of her decisions this time... she still managed to make some mistakes but no one can be perfect (it wouldn't be very exciting).
I'm excited to continue this series, and can not wait for book 3. There was yet another huge cliffhanger at the end, and I have a feeling I'm in for a few more of those before this series is over... but it'll definitely keep me hooked.
I have to admit, I checked frequently for this sequel to be released! I absolutely fell in love with Lily and Logan in the first one and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next!
The Gleaning ends right where Witch’s Brew left off. I was immediately sucked back into the story and world that was created in the first book. I read a lot of books every year so anytime I can read a sequel without having to pull the first book off the shelf to understand it is a good thing. I mean the world was so memorable that once I started reading, it all came back to me very quickly. Lily and Logan have such great chemistry that I find myself hurrying to get to more pages just to see them together. And of course, I am totally intrigued with the notion of witches and warlocks and the idea of this ceremony that could tear everyone apart or bring them back together.
While I love the story and find myself rooting for Lily and Logan the entire time, I love the choice pages. Usually, I read it these books through once, make my choice and continue on. Sometimes, I go back to the choice pages and choose differently just to see what the next few pages bring. I have to admit, I actually read this book more than once because every time I went back and made a new choice, the story went in so many different directions, it was like reading a new book! I absolutely loved it. While the basic plot stays the same, the way things happen and the timing of important plot points could change. It is not just that a few of the pages change, it really does change the story until the end. I also think it really shows an author’s ability to be able to change a story in so many ways yet still have it be the same. Heidi is VERY good at this! I will be counting down the minutes until the third installment is released.
I definitely recommend this book/series to everyone who loves books about witches or the paranormal. It is also a great way for the skeptics to try out an ebook! Make sure you check it out and enter our contest to win a copy of the ebook!
Heidi R Kling really stirs the pot with this spellbinding sequel to Witch's Brew. All the stops have been pulled out and while I was not as crazy as to the drama that went down for part of the book, all in all, it was a pretty fine sequel.
After the ending of Witch's Brew, I was really intrigued to see where the story would go. Some elements of the plot in The Gleaning, I really loved, others I was not as crazy about. Some of it seemed to be a little too dependent on teenage drama and it made me detach myself from the plot a bit. The rest was oh my goodness crazy awesome. I loved the deception and trickery and secrets that are layers and layers deep. Heidi R Kling really has spun a tale in this series and she knows how to make an impact. The ending is the all time high point of the book and Heidi R Kling darkens the scene yet again, leaving readers pining away for book 3.
I love the sexah-ness that is the romance between Logan and Lily. There is a reason we called book one the Sexah Magic Book and I'm happy to say that name still does the series justice. I love both of their characters and the relationship between then.
In The Gleaning, readers also see a little more into the cool, unique mythology Heidi R Kling has crafted in her coven of witches and warlocks. I love the expansion of knowledge and am really eager to learn even more about her witches. They are just so unique!
Anyone who knows anything about me knows that Heidi R Kling is one of my favorite authors. I marvel at her writing abilities as her prose is so gorgeous. She is a rockstar at contemporary, and a goddess at fantasy. I cannot wait to see what is next for the witches and warlocks of Melas Cove! The wait until the next book is going to be a long one indeed after the whirlwind that was The Gleaning.
Heidi R.Kling has done it again. I was given the second instalment of the Spellspinners of Melas County on a read for review basis and I was not disappointed. The author has yet again created another masterpiece. Heidi R.Kling has a way of grabbing the readers attention by jumping straight into the action. Not only is this an action filled novel the author has also allowed the reader to have some control through the new interactive style of writing. I really enjoyed taking some control of what was going to happen next in this book it made me feel even more connected to it. On top of this fantastic new style of writing the author jumped straight into her brilliant plot.
The second book picks up straight were the first one left off ,with witch Lily and warlock Logan stuck in the middle of years worth of hatred that brews between their kind. Fighting for their love whilst tackling new mysteries and their upcoming battle. This is a suspense packed novel which keeps the reader sitting on the edge of their seat. Complete with lots of twist and turns this is the perfect novel to draw you in. This book gets better and better as the characters discover more and more mysteries during their struggle to stay together.
On top of her wonderful plot Heidi R.Kling has managed to create well developed characters who stay true to their personalities throughout. Lily is still the energetic character she was in the first book but she has matured a lot due to the many problems she must face. Logan is also very much the same protective guy he was. Always putting Lily first and protecting her at all costs.
Heidi R .Kling has created another brilliant novel and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and the whole series if you have not yet read them.
The second book to Heidi R. Kling’s The Spellspinners of Melas County, The Gleaning, continues the story of Lily and Logan. Raised to fight each other and keep a balance between light and dark magic, the witch and warlock are meant to be enemies instead of lovers. Author Heidi wastes no time in seemingly continuing where the first book ended and presenting an action-packed start to the second installment. Sequels give room for more character development and readers will definitely learn more about Lily and Logan. Back stories are revealed which gave more depth to characters and progresses the plot along quite well.
The magic is more intense and the romance gets hotter. Heidi sure knows how turn the notch up higher, but just enough to not make it feel like it is too much. This remarkable story of witchery rubs off on Heidi’s writing style because it will cast a spell on its readers. It is absolutely spellbinding and her choice of words is truly hypnotic. I found myself having a difficult time putting the book down. The twists and turns she has laid out for her unforgettable characters will have readers glued to the pages trying to guess what will happen to them. The interactive portion of the story is engaging and makes the book intriguing and unique. I think it is an awesome idea of choosing how Lily and Logan’s story will turn out. I think it is more interesting that readers get to see how things could’ve spanned out differently. Putting the story’s power to the readers is enough reason why this book will certainly entertain any book lover. The Gleaning is a highly engaging book with a very intriguing story.
This is the second book in the series, and I decided to take a different approach. As in the first book, this story is told with a special twist – an interactive experience akin to those “choose your own adventure” books from your childhood (or MY childhood at least. How old am I again??). Anyway, last time I felt the need to reread the story, to find out what happened with all the other choices. It affected my enjoyment of the story. So THIS time, I just went through it once. It is driving me NUTS not knowing everything I missed! But I definitely enjoyed it more. I wonder how long until I give in and go back for a peek….
In this sequel, we’re given a look into the past of the witches and warlocks. I am definitely dying to find out how everything became so messed up for them! There is also confusion and betrayal, and who doesn’t love a little tension?! What I did miss, was the romance. Lily and Logan are being kept apart (at least in the version I read), and I missed their banter and their chemistry. See? Now I’m starting to talk myself into reading another version, to see if they get more time together!
And the ending. *sigh* Heidi Kling is seriously the master of a cliffhanger! There I was, feeling so thrilled that this giant battle was about to happen, and then it’s left like that?! ACK! It’s official. I’m hooked. I NEED the next book, because I can’t possibly go on with my everyday, mundane, non-magical life without knowing what happens!
A copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
The Gleaning is about a witch and warlock who are supposed to be enemies instead of lovers. Lily and Logan have been raised to fight each other to keep a balance between their light and dark magic. I loved how this was action-packed right from the start. It picks up right where the last one left off. We get to know the characters a lot more in this book which is something I felt like was missing from the first book. I loved Logan’s back story and I felt it added a lot to his character. The romance in this book was just plain adorable.
I liked the long flashback scene that goes back to the 1800s. Even though it distracted me a little from the plot since I couldn’t see at first how the two were related, I thought it was very entertaining to read. The flashback reminded me a lot of Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare because of the dashing, romantic characters and the setting from the past.
I loved the choices in this book. As you are reading along, you get to make choices as to where you think the plot should go. Both choices had a lot of scenes that were similar even though the plot moves in two directions. I loved them both, but I have a personal favorite (choice 1 if you are wondering!). It was an addicting read with some delightful Alice and Wonderland references. I thought this was a great addition to witch mythology.
Witch’s Brew (Spellspinner’s 1) left us with a steamy and heart-wrenching cliffhanger. Well, The Gleaning picks up right where we left off. And thank goodness for that because things are getting SERIOUSLY questionable in Melas County. On the eve of the gleaning, Logan and Lily struggle to not only trust each other but to figure out their parts in the world around them and this fated prophesy. Kling does a great job of endearing Logan and Lily to the reader and frankly her breathtaking romance scenes can’t be beat. This book is full of treachery and betrayals, which balances the romantic passion perfectly. There is something magic about their story, and not in a witchy way. I find myself bespelled with a compulsion here to read: to find out what happens to them, to see them safe and together, to see witches and warlocks brought back together. With more twists and turns than Witch’s Brew, The Gleaning had me on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen next. I still totally love the reader choice options that is the foundation of a Coliloquy title. The book is perfectly timed for Halloween too since we could all use some sexy magic as the witching hour approaches. The Gleaning has finally arrived and just like last time, we are left with a cliffhanger ending. I don’t know what will happen to Lily and Logan, but I know one thing for sure, I’m going to keep reading. Overall: A

This book thankfully picks up immediately where book 1 left us. Logan and Lily are trying to figure out how to make their relationship work, all while the clock is counting down the "the gleaning." Throw in some really confusing and hot doppelgangers and we've got a really addictive YA read.
Yes, this one ends in a cliffhanger, too, so if that sort of thing is a deal breaker none of my review will matter. That being said, this was a really fun read. I like trying to put together the pieces and solve this grand mystery that the author is building up. I wish we got more Logan/Lily time, but am holding out for even more romance in book 3.
The structure of this book was similar to the first in that you are prompted to make choices along the way. I don't know that my read would be the same as everyone else's, but I kept choosing to run after Logan (as everyone should, I guess). I'm still rooting for the doomed couple and can't wait for more YA paranormal romancey goodness!
Similar to the first book in this series, this one has several points at which you can make choices which determine the course of the story. All choices lead to the same ending but the path to get there is what varies. Despite my love of the "choose your own adventure" books as a child, I am not a big fan of this format as an adult. When I got to the end I HAD to go back and and read the other path. I am absolutely unable to leave half of a book unread!
After the cliffhanger ending of the first book I was eager to start this one. The long anticipated gleaning finally takes place and the identity of the doppelganger is revealed at the very end. The story involves betrayals from both Lily's coven and Logan's brotherhood, setting up more conflict that I imagine will come to a head in later books. This is very much a soap opera in the vein of a CW show and is just as enjoyable if you are into that kind of thing. I am into it and definitely will read the next book when it comes out!
I read The Gleaning on the heels of Witch's Brew because I could not get enough of the story. I love tales of magic and strong women coming into their own or being charged with a higher cause. In the Gleaning, Lily has both and she takes on the challenge like a true leader. Her connection with Logan is electric, a yin and yang dynamic that makes the reader believe in soul-mates. As these two star-crossed lovers struggle with evil and their own misplaced loyalties the story unfolds magically and rapidly, leaving you wanting more.
The interactivity is pretty cool - I went back and read the paths I hadn't before which makes this the gift that keeps on giving.. the text thingie was really cool too!
Firts off I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read her book.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. I was kinda disappointed in the second installment of The Spellspinners series. THe story was still cute like the first one and had the interactive sections as well. In this one I was able to read both versions of this book in a day and a half. The first time I read it I thought it was the better of the two versions. This had the diary part which I felt was too long in such a short book. I understand a connection needed to be made but that had too much information pertanning to what the reader needed. The second version annoyed me. I was hoping for more Lilly/Logan but I got more Coven stuff. The book is still a cute read but more for the younger crowd.
{my thoughts} - I really enjoyed the interactive parts of the first book. This second book being a non-interactive one. I wasn't as impressed with. I went to Amazon to purchase it but because I only have the kindle app and not a kindle that wasn't an option. This was however, a nice addition to the story. I don't like that it had ended the way it did. It just left me with a whole lot more questions as to what will happen next. I hope the next book comes out compatible with my kindle app and that this book also comes out with compatibility to the kindle app.
{reason for reading} - I was offered it in return for an honest review on the first book.
Well started off literally where book one came to a halt. It was a very fast paced and short. It didn't take me that long to read. It was good though. We find out who is the other 'Lily'. You find out some answers, only to be left with more questions.
Lily and Logan are meant to be, or so it seems. There are people out there who trying to keep them apart. While some friends can be trusted you find out others cannot. Lily and Logan have to work out there doubts and overcome them if they wish to survive. They say when you see your doppelganger, it means death is on the horizon.
I am really hoping there will be a third book. To many questions are left unanswered.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
While the first book in the series was fantastic, this one seems to suffer a bit from mid-series issues; all build up with minimal completion. Although the story and characters are very well written, there are plenty of unanswered questions which could leave the reader either intrigued or incredibly frustrated. There is definitely a feeling that there is more to come. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book and seeing how the protagonist progresses and develops as well as the added adventure and danger. I will not abandon theirs series, and in fact, look forward to what happens next.
good 2nd part to the series. full thoughts to come about logan/lily
This is the 2nd adventure where you choose what happens with Lily and Logan. Its starts off with Logan and Lily having their star crossed romance tested in different ways . Lily learns more family history. Logan learns more about the school and his uncle.
This was a good adventure , and learning about the witches in Melas. Logan & Lily is tested by outside help. Someone has gleaned both Logan and Lily. We also met Jude , and learn about Camilla.
As with the first book, I attempted to read through all the possible scenarios in the story although I feel that this time I may have gotten lost once or twice. Though it is cliche' I shall say what I thought at many points in this second volume of the tale, "and the plot, she thickens!" Lies and truth, trust and betrayal, and so many secrets make this an addicting read. I will most certainly be keeping an eye out for the next book in this series... I am hooked!
*I was provided with a copy from the author for a honest review.*
You just had to end it like that didn't you Ms. Kling? This was so full of answers and questions alike. I enjoyed it so much. Again I was a little confused by the interactive chapters and all but it worked out in the end. I would love it more if it was a normal book though. Now I really need to read the next one and I hope you will write it fast because that ending threw me off balance.
I enjoyed Witch's Brew and was excited for The Gleaning. It surpassed my expectations. Without giving too much away, there's a dark and a light version of The Gleaning both well-written. I especially love the scenes between Lily & Logan, not to mention the battle at the Stones. The interactive elements do not disappoint, and neither does some of the neat things that Heidi does with text.
This is such a fun series to read! The story surrounds the Spellspinners, witches and warlocks that have been separated into two communities and cursed. They have been given 100 years to fulfill a destiny of change or their magic is lost forever. Magic and curses are not a new premise, but the mythology that the author has built around them is very different.
I also love the active fiction format of this series. It is so much fun to make choices for the path that your experience takes. It also makes it fun to reread the book and make different choices. They begin and end the same ways but the path to get there changes with every choice.
There is much more mystery and intrigue in this book, a lot more darkness. There are twists and turns galore in this one, too, bringing in all new and disturbing aspects to the story line. The past truly comes back to haunt the current generation and there are so many secrets that are revealed.
This book is active fiction, like the others, but is almost two novellas in one. The first section is Lily's version of events, with choices for you as the reader to make. The second section is Logan's story, with more choices to make. There is also a third section that is called "Bonus Materials" and it tells Daisy's story of that fateful night and changes the story entirely so READ THAT, too!
Things to love...
--The characters. The characters are more fully developed this time and we learn so much more of the mythology and back story through them. --The darkness and the secrets. The intrigue level is so intense in this book!
Some Quotastic Goodness
--More than anything I wanted Logan to bear the mark. To be the Chosen (Loc.15). --I inched along the slick walls in the dark, my palms slipping against the smooth concrete. Then suddenly the surface wasn't cool and hard anymore. I felt my hands squish wet indentations into the wall that smelled of fresh blood (Loc. 211).
