Up & Down New York

Rate this book
Originally published in 1926, Up & Down New York is an imaginative, charming, quirky, and delightful period piece-but it is also timeless. This facsimile edition of the nostalgic classic reproduces Sarg's delightful illustrations of the dynamic and vibrant streets and famous places in New York. The surprise is in finding how much remains the same in many New York neighborhoods after 80 years, including Grand Central Station, Times Square, The American Museum of Natural History, City Hall, the Stock Exchange, the Great White Way (Broadway), the shuttle in the subway-not to mention the busyness and vibrancy that characterizes the city. The places that do not exist anymore, including the aquarium at the Battery and Washington Market, give us a glimpse of New York in its first heyday. This new edition of Tony Sarg's Up & Down New York will appeal to kids of all ages, to designers, illustrators, and book collectors, as well as anyone interested in New York or 1920s-era drawings.

A perennial favorite picture book of New York, this one of all Sarg's books gets republished on a regular basis. Before there was Martin Handford's Where's Waldo, Sarg pioneered the bird's-eye city view. He made riding the subway and negotiating Grand Central look like fun.

He's a good artist, but this seemed mailed-in. A blurb about each place would have been nice and not very difficult. It also seems like his style is better in a larger scale, so the viewer can better appreciate the details. As is, it kind of seemed redundant after a while because his style is pretty much the same throughout the book.

A fantastic collection of illustrated birds-eye view scenes of New York City in 1927. Sarg's highly detailed drawings of this particular city achieve a sense of timelessness, despite the 80 years that have passed.

A collection of detailed illustrations showing New York City in the mid 1920's. Sarg packs his pictures with more detail than any one observer could take in in a single sitting, practically necessitating a second or third examination of his work.

This is simply a book of pictures done by Tony Sarg. Whimsical lovely scenes of New York City from the 1920's. I'm going to cut out the pictures and frame them and hopefully find a spot for them in my house. I'm stealing this idea from Jenny of Little Green Notebook fame. Thanks, Jenny!

This book is incredible. Compared to 1926, so much is different - no El, no aquarium - and so much is the same - the character of New York.
