This unique perspective based on personal experience gives you insight into the physical, emotional, and the mental effects of vertigo symptoms.
The author is an Australian born writer with a background as an award-winning Creative Director, Executive Director and partner in a successful advertising agency. Working all hours to get to a point of no financial worries, came at the price of good health. At the height of his career and aged just forty-six, he suddenly became acutely ill. He was diagnosed with meniere's disease, but the full impact of having meniere's disease was to come later. He was to loose not only his health, but his career and financial status as he knew it.
Soon after the diagnosis of meniere's syndrome, he found little information about meniere's disease that helped. One doctor told him that meniere's was a very confrontational disease. That it was incurable. And advised him to "go out and enjoy yourself!"
He began to loose all hope that he would fully recover a sense of well-being. But it was his personal spirit and desire to get "back to normal" that made him not give up to a life of meniere's symptoms of severe vertigo, dizziness and nausea. It was a moment of decision and he had to make it.
He decided that you can't put a limit on anything in life. Rather than letting meniere's disease get in the way of recovery, he started to focus on what to do about overcoming meniere's disease.
Our experiences in life are valuable. We learn and understand more than we did before. With the advice on healing and recovery in his books, anyone reading the advice given, can make simple changes and find a way toward a full recovery from meniere's disease. First hand knowledge of how meniere's affects you and makes you feel, physically, emotionally, mentally gives you true insight. Meniere's affects your world as it impacts your life in a way the author understands from experiencing the disease and symptoms. And then making a full recovery.
These days life is different for the Author. He is a fit older man who has no symptoms of meniere's disease except for a hearing loss in one ear. He does not take any medication. All the physical activities he enjoys these days require a high degree of balance and equilibrium: skiing, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, windsurfing, weightlifting, and riding a motorbike. Not at all bad for a guy who once suffered symptoms of meniere's so badly, he could pick up a ball and throw it to his young daughter.
With a smile and a sense of humor, the Author pens himself as Meniere Man, because, as he says, meniere's disease is the one thing that changed his life so dramatically. Meniere Man writes with an in depth understanding of the effects of having meniere disease. The Author believes that if you want to experience a marked improvement in health you can't wait until you feel well to start. You must begin to improve your health, even though you don't feel like it. The Author is a writer, painter, designer and exhibiting artist. He is married to a Poet and Essayist. They have two adult children.
Vertigo Vertigo is an invaluable book for those who suffer from Meniere’s disease. The book was written by someone who experienced the disease firsthand and learned to manage its devastating effects. The book explains in detail what causes the disease, so the patient is not dealing with the unknown. The author then goes on to explain how he personally coped with the overwhelming effects of vertigo and the accompanying tinnitus and loss of hearing. One of the best aspects of this book is the emphasis on how vertigo can be managed by changing one’s diet, exercise and thinking patterns. Read Vertigo Vertigo if you have Menieres’ disease. It is an inspirational book. The author fought the disease and now skis, swims, and has conquered his fear of vertigo, while accepting that it can always return.
If you or someone you know has dealt with the hearing and balance disorder, Ménière's, and vertigo in particular, you'll want to read this book of hope. Written from a first hand knowledge perspective, it gives many explanations of how this disease affects the body and many more suggestions as to how to live with it. That, to me, was the theme: you can still manage your life by managing Ménière's. The author delves into a variety of offerings for coping from the psychological, nutritional, social, and pharmacological standpoints. Specific information, such as understanding the stages of a vertigo attack, is helpful for not only the person who has the disorder, but also for those who are close to that person. I would definitely recommend Vertigo, Vertigo as a worthwhile resource for Ménière's.
Great book on vertigo and Meniere's. Gets to the point with minimal medical terms thrown in for effect. Comprehensive approach. Will use for reference in the short and long term.
Reading this book, it won't take you many pages to realize that the man who wrote it knows EXACTLY what he is talking about. A quote from the book: "Vertigo is one of the more dynamic and frightening symptoms of Meniere's disease." The author of the book is a Meniere's disease sufferer. Let me correct this: He was a Meniere's disease sufferer. He knows what it means; he has experienced many times for many years the horizontal and rotational spinning that can last for hours. He decided against radical surgery and found personal management techniques that made it possible for him to say: "And now, I'm vertigo free."
If you are a sufferer of this disease, reading this book is a must. Equally, if one of your loved ones, relatives or friends is affected by this illness, I strongly recommend that you read this book.
The book is well structured and well written. It explains what's known about this affliction, it deals with the three stages of a Meniere's attack and what to do at each stage, and it provides the reader with dozens of coping and healing strategies. Doctors say that this illness is incurable. This may be so in a strictly medical sense, but, as the author in his down to earth approach convincingly outlines, it is curable, in a sense that it is manageable to such a degree that it does not need to have a negative impact on the quality of life of the person affected.
The author deals in this very impressive book with so many aspects of vertigo and how to cope with it, it would go far beyond the scope of this review to mention all of them. But there is one aspect that needs to be mentioned. Again, I quote the author: "Vertigo is not just a physiological issue, it's also a psychological one." And this affects sufferer on a daily basis, not only when an attack occurs.
Without hesitation, this is a five star self-help book that I strongly recommend. Reviewed by Fred Schäfer, author of The Solution Within Yourself.
