"The 7th day" by Nika Lubitsch is a story about a women who's on trial for killing her husband.
The first half was intriguing, I liked the writing style, but the second part was way too predictable and therefore quite boring.

Manchmal habe ich ja einen masochistischen Zug. In dem Fall wollte ich mal wissen, warum ein deutsches Buch einer unbekannten Autorin, noch dazu eines, das die Verlage nicht mit der Kohlenzange anfassen wollten, zum Bestseller wird. Und jetzt kommt das Masochistische: Ich habe mir ALLE Negativbewertungen reingezogen, die mit einem und die mit 2 Sternen. Und danach mit null Erwartungen den Sofort-Kauf-Button gedrückt.

Und dann sind mein Kindle und ich auf den Balkon gegangen. Jetzt muss man natürlich wissen, dass hier gestern wunderbares Wetter war und es nichts schöneres geben konnte, als mit einem Gläsle Trollinger und einem Buch im Freien zu sitzen. Deshalb ist es vielleicht der Trollinger und der Sonnenschein...

Egal. Ich habe mich glänzend unterhalten gefühlt. Und ja, auch ich wusste, wer der Mörder ist. Klar, so doof kann man doch nicht sein, um das nicht zu wissen! Aber warum hat die Schweinebacke das gemacht? Und hier lobe ich jetzt mal ein Fläschle Trollinger aus, für alle die schon vorher nicht nur das Wer sondern auch das Warum gewusst haben.

Ich gebe es zu, die Erählstruktur ist ungewöhnlich und mutig. Im zweiten Teil war ich dann auch erstmal ein wenig *gähn* - das hatten wir doch schon alles. Aber dann....

Und das Ende... Patricia Highsmith lässt grüßen...

O paskui ji tapo vienintele už žmogžudystę nuteista moterimi, kuri sėdėdama kalėjime atskleidė nusikaltimą. Kai užsakęs draugo žmogžudystę, žudikas neketino nusišauti, jis ketino pabėgti, bet... 20 metų draugystės ir iki dienų pabaigos saugomos paslapties našta. Galbūt ji kada nors papasakos, kaip viskas buvo, kai jį nušovė. Juk laikas gydo žaizdas. Laimingos pabaigos nebus, bet galbūt bus nauja pradžia?

I. loved. this. book. I was initially concerned when I grabbed it, seeing as how it is a German-English translation, but lawdy, lawdy. I was not disappointed in the least.

This book begins in the courtroom. The story is told from three different points in time. You see while Bille is going through her trial, you see how she got to where she is on trial and the 2nd half of the book is what occurs after the trial. I have so many things I could say about this book, but, well, that would include MANY spoilers and well, 'ain't no one got time for that!'

Bille is....complex. Micha loves Bille. The things that occur are unexpected. The outcome of this book is unexpected. The twists and turns and the betrayal and....well, trust me when I say, this is not a book that has been a #1 Kindle seller in Germany for just any reason. I devoured this book in one sitting and you should too!

Fazit: Ich muss ja sagen, dass ich mehrmals dachte zu wissen, wie diese Geschichte ausgeht. Doch, das Ende hat mich überrascht. Eine super ausgeklügelte Story, die ich binnen eines Tages ausgelesen hatte. Ich musste wissen, wie es weiter geht. 😅 Und was hab ich mit der Protagonisten mitgelitten 🙈 Absolute Leseempfehlung 👍

Der 7. Tag hat wirklich alles, was ein solider Krimi meiner Meinung nach braucht: einen flüssigen Schreibstil, gründlichen Aufbau, überraschende Plotwendungen, Tiefgang und trocknen Humor. Nicht zu fassen, daß das Manuskript von allen großen Deutschen Verlagen abgelehnt worden ist. Glücklicherweise gibt es Selbstverlag.

And English readers: sorry, folks, but you are really missing out on this one. Either you wait patiently for an English translation or learn to read German very quickly!

Nika Lubitsch's 7th Day flows like your favorite television drama. It's chapters are easily divisible by the mock news clips she provides to give you a quotient of interconnected episodes from a series about a woman on trial for murdering her husband. Get your errands and daily responsibilities out of the way, because once you start this there's no stopping. Did she or didn't she? And if she didn't - who did? I was so pleased with myself for figuring it out - but would have been just as pleased if I hadn't. A really fun read - and the price is great at the Kindle Store!

I liked the way the story was told. I wasn't shocked by the story as the author's cues were a little obvious. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it! It was a fast paced, wonderfully written book.
Recommmend it for mystery genre aficionados. Couldn't put the book down!

Sybilles Leben könnte nicht besser laufen. Sie hat mit Michael einen fantastischen Mann an ihrer Seite und ist in ihrem Beruf sehr erfolgreich. Die beiden erwarten ihr erstes Kind und richten sich gerade ihr Traumhaus ein. Doch von einem auf den anderen Tag ändert sich alles. Plötzlich soll Sybille eine Mörderin sein und das Opfer ist ausgerechnet ihr eigener Mann.

Wie schnell sich das Leben ändern kann, muss Sybille am eigenen Leib erfahren. Nicht nur das: plötzlich sieht sie ihr bisheriges Leben in einem ganz anderen Licht und auch die Menschen um sie herum scheinen sie komplett anders wahrgenommen zu haben, als sie das bis jetzt dachte.

Nika Lubitsch beschreibt ein raffiniertes Psychospiel, das mit Sybille gespielt wird. Der Krimi war von der ersten Seite an spannend und konnte diese Spannung die ganze Zeit halten. Allerdings hätte ich mir ein bisschen mehr Ausführlichkeit gewünscht, mit gerade mal 190 Seiten ist die Geschichte gerade für die beschriebenen Verwicklungen etwas zu knapp war.

Sybille Thalheim steht vor Gericht. Sie wird beschuldigt ihren Ehemann Michael Thalheim mit 18 Stichen ermordet zu haben. Aus Rache, dass er ihr Leben zerstört hat, indem er 9,6 Millionen Mandantengeld veruntreut hat und daraufhin spurlos verschwand. Nur kann sie sich an nichts mehr erinnern. Hat sie ihn wirklich umgebracht?
Die Geschichte lebt durch die ungewohnte Perspektiven. Der Mordprozess und dessen Aufklärung wird aus der Sicht der Angeklagten (Ich-Erzählung) und der der unterschiedlichen Boulevardpresse erzählt. Leider flach das Buch gegen Ende ab und wird stellenweise zu sachlich. Trotzdem eine ungewöhnliche Erzählung mit unerwarteten Wendungen.

I really enjoyed this book. I was worried about it being originally in German but the translation was excellent. I just skipped over the words I did not know & could not pronounce. The characters were extravagant and kinda selfish but that was fine. The main character takes us back through her memories as she sits on trial for murdering her husband. I was kinda hoping he was not really dead but he was. During the flashbacks I was trying to get clues as to who the actual murderer was because the wife says it was not her. The second half of the book walks us through an investigation to find the actual murderer. Overall I enjoyed the suspense & the mystery.

I enjoyed this book despite the repetition. For some reason it worked for the most part. (I always try to be more lenient on style when I’m reading a foreign book due to translation issues, but this one could have been written in English.) I was hooked from the beginning, getting to see the inner monologue of the main character who was on trial for murder which she didn’t remember committing. Also, the German court proceedings were interesting. The twists and turns later, and the different perspectives given through letters and media reports kept me reading.

Dieser Krimi hat weniger als 200 Seiten und besteht aus 2 Teilen. Ich muss gestehen, wenn das Buch länger gewesen wäre, hätte ich wahrscheinlich noch im 1. Teil aufgehört zu lesen. Das war völlig chaotisch , da wurde eine Story in der Gegenwart und eine in der Vergangenheit erzählt - so weit, so gut . Allerdings wurde alle zwei Sätze die Zeitebene gewechselt.
Im 2. Teil war das Buch dann deutlich besser und interessanter, so dass ich zum Schluss zwischen zwei und drei Sterne schwankte.

Eine Frau wird des Mordes an ihrem Ehemann bezichtigt und rekapituliert, wie es dazu kommen konnte. Leider kommt dabei erst spät ein wenig Spannung auf, und die Rückblenden wirken oft bemüht. Außerdem ist keiner der Charaktere durch sprachliche Eigenheiten geprägt, was es schwer macht, sich in die Situationen zu versetzen. Am Ende wird die Tat selbst herzlich wenig beleuchtet.

Gera knyga. Stipri moteris. Neįsivaizduoju, kaip galima tai išgyvent, ką išgyveno pagrindinė herojė. Tiek netekčių. Tiek skausmo - fizinio ir dvasinio. Žudikas man buvo aiškus nuo pirmų puslapių, todėl ta mintis šiek tiek erzino, tačiau nepaisant to, visas siužetas parašytas puikiai. Ir pabaiga netikėta. Tikrai rekomenduočiau kaip gerą vieno vakaro knygą.

Ungewöhnlich und spannend. Sie schreibt die selbe Geschichte 3 oder 4 mal, oder besser gesagt – es gibt 3 oder 4 Geschichten von einem Mord. Viel Spaß. Ich mag es gerne.

Good story with a twist

They are a power couple, a couple of means and privilege, and this trial will not escape anyone’s eye. She is famous for her journalist work, and her husband for his work as a business attorney.

It’s true, Sybille is on trial for her husband’s murder. Yes, she thought about it before hand. Yes, she went to find him after his strange disappearance. Yes, she was going to give him a reckoning…

But she doesn’t remember any of it.

That’s of little consequence, though, as soon police find her with the bloody knife on her hotel nightstand – the very knife that brutally stabbed her husband. Of course she did it!

Sybille’s dear old friend, Ulli, is her defense attorney. He is very well known, and one of the best; her husband said so many times before his sudden disappearance. But Sybille and Ulli know each other besides Ulli sharing a business space with her late husband: they used to be lovers, before Michael came into the picture. In fact, Ulli is the very one who introduced Sybille to her husband. I found this very odd, and immediately thought there were all kinds of ways this trial could go wrong for Sybille, often referred to as Bille. I could not help but keep coming back to the term “jilted lover,” regardless of how Bille describes the ending of their relationship. I also thought this would be considered a conflict of interest, and Ulli should not be allowed to represent Bille, but that’s just my opinion.

The prosecution calls up every single witness that could remotely give any opinion or testimony about Sybille’s character: her former boss, her mother’s cleaning lady, various police officers and investigators, a psychiatrist, and lastly the waiter and all of the patrons but one who dined with Sybille in her hotel’s restaurant the night her husband was murdered. They paint a disparaging, ugly portrait of her. How funny one’s actions can be misrepresented.

Throughout Bille’s seven day trial, she shares her own narration from the courtroom of the goings-on of the trial, almost in journal entry form. Strangely though, she intersperses her own flashbacks of Ulli, his wife (who is Bille’s best friend from college), and her husband throughout various points in their relationships, and Bille is in no way to be taken as a Madonna for the sexual references and descriptions she makes of her relationship with Ulli so long ago. This part was difficult for me to wade through and separate at first, as I had no idea where this was leading, but after a time I got used to the style and technique that Lubitsch was using.

Also included with Sybille’s stream of consciousness of the trial and her past memories is the summary of the day’s trial by one of the local papers in an article, and they take Sybille for all she’s worth, make her out to be the most horrendous, using quotations out of context and applying sinister connotations to her actions.

This book shocked me in several ways, and it all comes about in the ending, which I can’t tell you about. :) Suffice it to say that Sybille is indeed disgraced, but the ever-hungry journalists are dying for an inside scoop – and they get it. Sybille agrees to write her story for Cosmos magazine, in return for which they will not edit her writing, but they will also conduct their own investigation of her husband’s murder…

The novel includes Sybille’s installments of her story for Cosmos magazine, as well as a letter from her husband, and an installment from the writers of Cosmos about what they uncovered on this insane journey that Sybille sent them on to find out just what happened to her husband, and get the answers she so desperately needs. You will be shocked at what you find!

A very good read. I recommend to all who enjoy the thriller and mystery genre, as well as if you like a twist!
