The murder was shocking in its brutality: A thousand-yard high-velocity shot that left an innocent nineteen-year-old babysitter dead on a Mississippi plantation. At first, police called it a hunting accident. But the killer left a calling card—for ex–U.S. marshall Winter Massey. And when Massey investigates, he knows exactly who the shooter is. He just doesn’t know why.…
Once Massey dueled an elite assassin. Now, in a land of fading plantations and a booming casino industry, this sworn enemy has resurfaced to play a cat-and-mouse game of revenge. While Massey ignites a hunt for the killer, another murder is committed and violent secrets are exposed inside a powerful gambling conglomerate, in the star-crossed family of a beautiful landowner, and even within the FBI itself.… For Massey, the hunt for the sniper is personal. But the more he learns, the more he suspects that he’s being blinded by a whole lot of smoke and mirrors—behind which lies the most explosive secret of all.…
It was okay; and I had trouble deciding between 2 and three stars. I gave the author the benefit of the doubt becasue its a series (I think this is the fourth book) and the first one I read.
There were way too many characters for a crime novel; there's the evil mastermind, who has a henchman, check... but wait, his henchman has a lackey, and the mastermind as a boss- hold on a second... there's hit men on top of hit men, its just way to convoluted. Half way through I started to think the author wasn't creating a mystery as much as he was just muddying the waters.
Had I read the books that preceded this one, I may have loved all the cameos, so make up your own mind
I found this book at a thrift store and thought it sounded interesting. The story was, and I liked the writing and characters. It was just that the violence and graphic descriptions of it were a little too much for me
This is a series and this one may be the last. J. Winter Massey has taken his family to Mississipi for some hunting. The former US Marshall receives a call from the northern Mississippi county sheriff that a hunting shot killed a young woman at the house where she was caring for the owner's child. The sheriff is wondering why Winter's business card was found at the scene of the shot.
The fourth book in the Winter Massey series by John Ramsey Miller. This is the only book in the series I have read, but it was fine as a standalone. A fast-paced and entertaining read.
Good book, somewhat typical for this type of story. Towards the end it seems like the writing kind of wanes. Almost like the inspiration for the book fades as he writes. Overall a good book though.
