Once a year the pigs throw a big bash. This year turns out to be the greatest "pignic" of all. Each pig in this rhyming alphabet book brings a favorite dish, from Auntie Anne's apple pie to Zak's zucchini bread. Children have fun with the alphabet as the zany pigs gather for their annual feast.

Well, it's a rhyming alphabet book, which I thought would be good especially since it's written by Anne Miranda, who wrote To Market, To Market. Unfortunately, in a picture book, the illustrations matter- a lot- and this one I think is harmed by the pictures. They're a little similar to the illustrations in Jack Prelutsky's Aunt Giraffe's Green Garden, but not nearly as cute and colorful. My son didn't seem very into the story, but I was bored by the ugly pigs. The interesting foods they were bringing to the pignic were a little fun, but also a little exotic for toddlers, I think.
An informative book about the alphabet but also about different foods. The book goes through the alphabet and what each member of the pig family brings to the picnic.
At first glance you would not expect this to be an alphabet book. The illustration is not very cute but it is interesting and different. The uniqueness of this book is what attracts me to it.
Alphabet book with wild looking pigs on a pignic. Illustrations by Rosekrans Hoffman. Ruth generously gave me two of her originals...which are prized possessions.
4/8/10 I had an idea that since the counting with fingers along with the reading worked so well with the preschoolers, we would try the alphabet. So I found an alphabet book that was not too long with text, had fun pictures, and had something of a story so the children could enjoy that while joining me in making the ASL signs for each letter. Definitely a hit with both groups!
The book is fun for any other kind of read--lap-read, teaching alphabet, tongue twistery, etc.
5/1/13 & 5/2/13: I used our felt letters and had the kids sign the letters. We were much more into that than in the book, but it was still fun to say some of the different foods the pigs brought.
I like the idea of this book- with the different family members and food represented for each letter, but the illustrations are just creepy/scary/weird- not good for children.
This book is about a group of pigs that go on a "pignic" and each pig brings something. It goes through what each pig brings and incorporates the letters of the alphabet.
